POSTGAME: QF vs Collingwood

My take on the Maynard bump is that it was similar to the Patrick Cripps bump on Ah Chee last year, where Cripps left the ground initially to contest in a football action but then bumped him in the head. I don't think it was clear cut that Maynard should be suspended but the AFL will surely want to see him suspended and I think the tribunal will say it was accidental and let him off (particularly because it is Collingwood and finals).

For the love of god, can Kossie please stop flying for speckies over the pack and crumb the contest instead!!!

If I ever hear again "one day he'll take one of those" I'll spew up

It's not school footy or an exhibition game, he's so wasting his immense talent

At least we didn't have to hear USA USA last night.

Hard to cheer for Mason Cox when he's getting destroyed by a player he is trying to illegally hit.

One of the worst blights on our game is Cox. Nice little forceful tug of Trac's leg and high hit on Clarry too.

The sooner he departs back to the US the better.

Cripps was found guilty but let off on a procedural technicality (orchestrated by the AFL). If it is like that, Maynard should get 3 or 4.

But he won't.

He wont get suspended for the bump on brayshaw. You have NFI. The guy jumped in the air, then turned his body and bump a defenceless Bradshaw. Will be lucky to only get 3 weeks

The second part of my response was directed at the headbutt, but no I don't think he'll be suspended for the Brayshaw hit either. Whether he should or not is a different question. I don't think he will

I'm seething at Maynard but I don't think you've interpreted what happened correctly.

In my view he made a genuine attempt to smother, but with the ball gone, also made a split second, barely conscious decision to turn and lead with the hip and shoulder while Gus was vulnerable, if nothing else, then to make him 'earn it'.

The 'barely conscious' aspect of it would make sense to me, as its in instinct that character emerges.

He's known to have white line fever - I think his instinct was to take a free hit and inflict pain.

Over my sporting days I had/have white line fever, and hand on heart, I have to admit I have at times intended to inflict pain in the heat of the moment.

I don't expect everyone to understand this but I feel uniquely placed in this scenario to comment.

How such a situation is adjudicated, I don't know. General consensus around the footy public seems to be he will walk free.

If Maynard had jumped in the air to 'bump' Gus he would be gone for all money. Does the fact he tried to 'spoil' the kick - even totally unrealistically - change the fact that he collected Gus in the had with the point of his shoulder?

There are numerous examples of players contesting the ball and then at the last minute bracing for contact who have been suspended. But then there was Patrick Cripps who left the ground and KO'd Ah Chee from Brisbane

A Collingwood veteran on the MRP will help the cause for Maynard I'm sure.

Not responding to what happened to Gus is the most embarrassing  and annoying thing about this club.

We should have crunched them at every turn. Laid twice as many tackles. And I mean tackles that rattle and leave a reminder..

I'm sorry but it was a soulless game after that.where we didn't stick up for our mate.

We were bullied and didn't fight back.

Maynard does love the tough guy act but I don't think he's a "dirty player."
Plays hard but fair.
Much like our own Jack Viney who we love so much.

Cox on the other hand is 100% a dirty player.
Probably the dirtiest in the league along with Toby Greene.
There was one reason he was selected and that was to drive his knees into Gawn as often as he could.

And to hold lever and may to disrupt our defence

Extremely flat this morning. Last year’s QF I just felt we were genuinely outplayed and came to the realisation we’re just not that good. This year I think there’s no real stand-out team in our way and it will genuinely be a missed opportunity if we don’t win it this year.

We absolutely shot ourselves in the foot. Just dumb, easy to defend entries, time after time. We were our own worst enemy.

I suppose instead of looking at the last 6 weeks of form, all we really needed to focus on was the last 3 weeks was leading to this game. We’re averaging just 68pts per game since Petty went out. In my mind, we’re just an upmarket version of the Saints.

What worries me the most is if we do go out in straight sets again I really feel it may break this group. What’s the point of finishing top 4 in season if you can’t win a final? I think it will severely dampen this teams confidence and even our supporter base for next year if we can’t win at least one final this finals series.

Exactly my feelings.

Agree so much, only Viney actually went at Maynard. Sure it wasnt a straight up bump but it wasnt an accident either it was reckless. No players flying the flag was dissapointing. I also thought Fristch laid some big tackles

I was within smelling-distance of that bunch of mutants behind the goals last night, and unfortunately I did hear that chant.

I scanned the faces of that mob more than a couple of times last night, and was genuinely able to console myself with the the thought that no matter what happens on the scoreboard, the ultimate losers were right over there.

There’s better ways to “fly the flag” than exhausting yourself with a bit of pointless wrestling. Would have much preferred Viney to use that energy in the game itself.

If nothing else, last night vindicated my pure, sheer unadulterated hatred for the filth.  I can handle losing a match, although that was one we shouldn't have lost (I maintain it was lost the moment Maynard went through Gus), but what I can't get over is the despicable crowd behaviour.  The cheersquad doing the Collingwood chant as Gus is stretchered off.  The filth cheering every time Maynard went near the ball.  The hoards of ferals that descented on our cheer squad baying for blood at the end of the game.  Hearing about a friend of mine (not in the cheer squad) being king hit and then descened upon by three filthy thugs after she called them out for cheering Maynard, leaving her bloodied and bruised, and the security doing stuff all about it.  The group of thugs tormenting a child outside the ground at the end of the game, leaving this kid in tears, terrified.

I hate them.

Help if we actually kicked straight!

Yep. I mentioned in the pre game post that we beat them in June after kicking bad and if we kick straight we win. Unfortunately we again kicked poorly, not only the behinds but many out of bounds on the full that could easily have been goals. This along with to many passengers was our downfall. Got a lot of work to do in a very short time but not all is lost. We can beat Blues/Swans and then Lions/Port to get to the big dance but we need more contributions across the whole team not just the normal 4 or 5.

What do you meannnnnn.

Pickett bumped Smith. His intention was to bump?!

Maynard's action was to smother!

This place is crazy.

I can’t remember anyone ever trying to smother with their shoulder. Can you find any footage for me. Would be really interested to see the shoulder smother executed

The one thing I haven't spoken about yet is suspensions. I think it's a footy act but haven't said he should be cleared because at the end of the day you do run the risk if you choose to leave the ground. I also don't know enough about the gradings etc. They  still need to uphold some kind of duty of care and protecting the head.

I wouldn't complain if he was given a week or 2.

4-5 weeks and it sends a message

Gets out of hand and then even those who are supporting Maynard now will change their minds

As I said.

I'll let you bother with the jargon.

It'll come down to common sense however and in the end, he will get off.

Its cool that you know all the terminology though. Very kewl.

The afl has shown tons of common sense so far with these situations.

A few things about last night, i was there with some of my family at the melbourne end of the ground surrounded by the most obnoxious opposition supporters i have seen in my 50+ years of attending VFL/AFL games.

Maynards hit, the ball was coming from Gus's foot at an upward angle, thats where you smother the ball. It was not coming from his head. Maynard left the ground and turned his shoulder into Gus, his protecting himself does not give him an excuse to do potentially irreparable damage to another player. Gus has had head issues in the past. His actions took one of our best players out of the game and they suffered no consequence for it. If he does not get at least 3 or 4 weeks then this would be an absolute disgrace and show the AFL tribunal for the farce it commonly is, i.e. viney got 6 weeks for the first dangerous tackle.

As for goody while i was not a great fan of some of the selections the team he put out there was good enough to win it if they applied themselves, and kicked straight. We had a lot of opportunities to win but just could not do it. We had a lot of passengers and a lot of poor disposals.  I personally don't mind if roo or tom go out for Grundy. Grundy would have been a lot more effective than either of these as he could have helped max out in the ruck who was getting jumped into by that gutless Cox.  he may have even contributed a goal or two, he and Mac could have rested down the forward line where we would have at least had another tall to compete for the long dumb bombs we kept sending in there. Grundy's ruck work is far far superior than roo and other stand ins.  In the last game he played his taps in the 3rd and 4th quarter got us running out of the centre. I dont think they should abandon the plan of playing both. Yes it does not always work out, but how many times have we player, brown, roo, tom and other who have failed to really contribute to the score. Let max have a lot of ruck work, but also have a decent replacement to help him out.

As for our small forwards, we really need to address this we are not getting enough out of some of these players, some of these guys were hardly sighted, the ball went in there 60+ times. Apart from Kozzie where they hell were they. We need to look toward other options maybe think out of the box. i wonder if rivers would work forward, though with Gus out maybe give him a run in the midfield. Do we really need smalls, if Dunstan was available i would suggest him as an option, he gets a lot of the ball and does a lot of tackling both of which have been seriously missing from our small forward at times. but his out. What other options have we got besides than playing the same smalls/interchanges, etc.

I dont understand why some of our players are so slow in moving the ball on Bowey for one, holds up the ball when he has open players short he can pass to, but delays kicking it, then invariably goes long.

Now to the future, ideally swans beat calton, so that we can play the swans at the MCG, but whoever wins tonight, we have proven we can beat anyone if we are playing well. I believe we can still win the premierships. we should have won against collingwood early in the season by 5 or more goals not 8 points, we should have won last night by 2 or 3 goals but did not. What better way to end the season than producing our best and win a premiership by beating collingwood. Go Dees.

Gotta make a statement on Friday night. Consecutive straight sets exits and we’ll be labelled chokers. Rightly imo.

what have you got dees. It’s do or die. Max led the way last night but not enough followed. I’m very disappointed in some senior players. I expect a response.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
