  • Defence wins finals:
    • In the last month we have been back to our 2021 stingiest best.  Points against:
      • North 71 pts
      • Carlton 60 pts (lost due to dodgy umpiring)
      • Hawks: 60 pts
      • Sydney:  56 pts
    • Coll defence has been leaking like a sieve even when they had Moor and Murphy in.  Pts against for the last month:  105 (loss to Hawks), 101 (win on Geelong), 124 (loss) to Lions.  The last game vs Ess doesn't count.
  • Oliver and Fritsch will get better.
  • Petracca will continue his last quarter rampages of the last 6 weeks.  He has that determined look he had in the 2021 GF when he went wild...
  • We are fitter
  • Our system is a proven GF winner

In 2021 Goodwin and our leaders had a steely look about them.  They have it again.  There is a determination there that will take our beloved Dees a long way.  All the way!!!

They are a one trick pony!!

There are some good points there - and Grundy should be able to display some personal pride in his form against the former club. I suspect skinny, meatless Cox will avoid attempting to maim Grundy, but Max is going to be his target with the knee and boot-stub. Get Cox angry, or humiliate him, and he goes to water, becoming totally ineffective. Grundy will know this; Grundy should have a tactic or two to invoke this. Max will play his game and will still be a target all around the ground. We must keep Maxie on two feet - no falling over - support and protection must be rendered. Max will take us to a win in the GF if we can do this, taking no prisoners elsewhere on the ground - we must ensure that he remains injury-free.

100%
Grundy is 6ft 8. He can be very useful off the bench, when opponents are exhausted

I said it at the start of the year, Grundy could be a real weapon off the bench. He isn’t a forward, he can be a weapon elsewhere

I really hope we use him in September

we should consider rotating Grundy off the Bench, whilst we can. This is September.
play him against his old team, who discarded him…

We need Max for a month of serious work

Gawn’s past two performances are not as good as in his previous months worth. Looks over worked. Hard to see him carrying our rucks with cameos with JVR for up to 3 or 4 punishing finals. Grundy can offer plenty.

Just hoping Bowey's shoulder is okay, it had to be popped back in during the game.

Are we 100% sure it popped out? Jude Bolton on sideline stated that it was just a stinger and came back on and played the game out.

Im married to a Collingwood supporter...though not an arrogant or delusional one. Her family....all filth.

Prior to 21 there wasn't a whole lot of respect....pity was more the term.

Since 21...  their discussions are quite level and non-conceitful. Dare i say...reluctant respect .   None of them see this as necessarily an automatic win. Quite the opposite..  they carry grave concerns.

This will be a ringa ding full on final.  A very similar game imho to yesterday's...  I rate the Filth higher than the Bloods.

Happy to walk away with a 1 pt win.

Some items on the board might favour us. They just had a witches hat training run..   we had a full on finals rehearsal.

We couldn't hit the side of a barn last time...but had their game worked over.

Whoever wins next Thursday....will...imo...win the flag.

Brilliant LH.

Funnily enough, i was literally just about to reply to El Diablo's  request for 'cold hard facts to support' my confidence we'll beat the pies with:

  • Umm, the 2023 home and away season?

I might have perhaps also pointed to some very long posts, going into great detail about why we are the best team in it, and the Pies are 'the most over rated team i can ever recall'.

But no need - you've nailed it!

Definitely left field thinking..... not a shabby idea all ..

September can be a good time to deploy unknown ( therefore not played against ) structure.

Goody was a very 'different style' thinker in his earlier days .

Interesting thoughts Sir Why 😉

We as a team look better with one ruck, to play Grundy we give up to much run a carry, vs blues we looked slow and part of that is due to 2 rucks

Wasn't it the Lions in 2004 that tried to beat Port up with fists because they knew that Port had their measure on the field in the GF?

No wonder Chris Scott and Sook McCrae use the flu/gastro excuse whenever the lose and can't handle it. Their Thug coach also couldn't handle losing and belted opponents off the ball.

Going to be very interesting game...

I actually joked somewhere i wouldn't mind if they beat each other up...  😉

Tmac is an interesting beast  In reality he only has to turn back the clock for 3 games....thats all  ( in a fashion )

I think many under-rate Tmas...I used to..  Is he still reasonably mobile ??  ...but a fit and firing Tommy Mac is a pretty handy player...And he wont be fazed by these being finals.

So...all stats aside....  how is Tommy travelling..and what's been his role ...as far as anyone can discern ??

cheers

Bub, always been in the Tom MacDonald camp from the beginning of his footy career. From back in the dark ages as a developing key defender. Through his remarkable transition to a key forward in 2018 and his terrific contributions to the '21 flag season. Given the physical attrition on his body (he has had lengthy injury spells in the last three seasons).

My concerns are;

1. Does he still cover the ground defensively and still retain his once elite endurance running?

2. Is he able impact contests with sufficient mobility and agility especially when the ball hits the deck?

3. Can he get sufficient separation from his opponents to take the ball in the air cleanly?

His performances at Casey post operation and recovery have definitely been encouraging. The signs particularly from last round suggest Tom is playing with more freedom and authority. If he is able to tick the boxes I'd be elated for him to turn back the clock for 3 seasons.

Agree. Not that Norths VFL defence was much to write home about, but McDonald get several marks on the lead with good separation inside the forward 50. Haven't seen that with him for a very long time.

I just don't want to be in a scenario after this game where there is even a flash of a thought: "Maybe we could have used Grundy". The intel on his ex teammates and how to push their buttons, the option if Max is getting manhandled once again. Yes I know this robs us of running power but in my Monday afternoon 11 days out from the game opinion this is exactly what the tactical sub is for. Can we not play a side similar to what we have but with Grundy as a sub and then if he's needed, bring him in?

I'm happy to listen to any counter points on this, I just think it could be foolish to rule the guy out from the running this early.

Cox and Cameron will try to work Gawn into the ground. JVR needs to concentrate on his forward craft instead of doing disruptive cameo ruck work. One goal a game by him won’t cut it in finals. Grundy has to play. Its a new ball game now and what didn’t work in H&A has no relevance to what can or can’t work in finals.

It may or may not have been popped....but to me...a highly qualified tv watcher...therefore knows 2/3 of 3/5 of sfa...  he was favouring it...the exact way you would if popped....but at the same time it might well have been a doozy of a stinger as some suggest.

Anyone know officially what transpired ??

Might just have been the 'deliberately' overlooked one-step-at-a-time big man deployment - no loud, public laudits - just working on the little things at Casey and keeping fit, aerobic and experimental. He could be used as a rather sneaky, back-up decoy to help Max, the other forwards, and settle a few playing marques against his old team and its entourage. We do know that he has done this before to other teams playing against the Filth and we have seen his mobility increase and candid impacts improve consequentially. It hasn't happened yet for the Dees, but it could be the selection coup of the season across the finals. From the bench, worth a try ... big, bad and mean.

His form hasn’t been great recently regardless. If Hibberd is over concussion symptoms and is fit, I’d bring him in for Bowey. Defense wins premierships, and Hibbo is a top tier defender who can lock down the small-mid size game breakers like Jamie Elliott, Charlie Cameron etc. We’ve got rebound covered elsewhere, especially with the recent rise of Rivers.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
