I never played footy at a senior level, but I know you do @dazzledavey36.

Do players really try harder just because it's a teammates' milestone game or if they're retiring (ref. Franklin)?

There is an element where from a teammate perspective you definitely take in the significance of what a player's milestone especially when it's your skipper.

You certainly build yourself up for it mentally know deep down you want to try that extra harder. Though when you're out there playing in the heat of the moment realistically you're pretty much treating it as another game.

It's different with the buddy scenario because that's a send off game for a highly influential player of the game and then there's finals aspiration at stakes with the Swans. They'll 100% be going in mentally knowing that finals will be their top priority but also wanting to send buddy off on a good note and celebrate his career in fashion.

I don't think we will play Gawn as an interceptor down back until finals.

We did too much last year and it was worked out and planned for by opposition sides.

Much like Kosi playing on ball, I reckon we will only see glimpses of it until September. Can't let all the rabbits out now.

Did I mention just how scared I am of this week’s game. Usually I get a vibe from within that’s accurate to about 85%, I’ve got nothing on this except fear and loathing

The hawks will chip and switch.  Can't guard grass. Must pressure ball carrier

Never forget the painful years.  This result killed our season at round 1. 2008.  I hope we smash them

Hawthorn 5.5 7.10 15.12 23.16.154

I was there for that one - it was anyone's game until 6 minutes into the first quarter......

I think they will switch and try to spread us and get chaotic entries. setup from the midfield and allow the move to the back flank then ‘bam’ no corridor or target wing or forward. Take Sicily out, don’t let the fridge magnet cause any bother and shut down jai newcomb.

better in the middle - maybe grundy in ruck and max forward? (70/30).  More kossie rotation through there with Trac forward more.

jj out, Melk in, Spargo in.

if we ain’t got this, we got nothing….

You know it was going to be one of those years where we could manage a whopping 2 goals to 3 qtr time on a beautiful mid 20’s day.

Agree.

I worry we will struggle a bit to run out the game given how brutal last week's game was.

So I think the first quarter will be critical.

I hope they come out hard, put huge pressure on, smash them in tbe contest and create scores from turnover.

And be aggressive. Don't give them a sniff and set up a match winning lead early. Then maintain it.

this is my fear too

if our start is slow i can see it turning into an absolute dogfight in which we're struggling to curtail their shortball game

I think the notion of players trying harder just because it’s their teammate’s milestone game is silly. They should be trying their damndest regardless. I also don’t like when a team is told to “Do it for…” an example being the first match after Jimmy passed when everyone was telling the boys to win the match for him. I understand it’s used as a way to spur the team on, but it also puts undue pressure on them.

Oh and DS, if it was anyone other than you I’d ignore it, but because it’s you ima go ahead and point it out… your apostrophe is in the wrong place (above). 😝

You’re welcome, every poster who’s ever been corrected by DS.

Never said otherwise. Just wondering if you had any inside info since you keep saying watch this space 😂

You also never said who you think Dunstan should replace in the team.

unless Viney is carrying an injury and needs a week off, Dunstan has little chance

and even then....

in the meantime, we'll keep watching that space of yours

Whichever team we pick, this is a must win.  We need to start well

The Hawks are playing well right now and now that they've got pick 3 in the draft stitched up, they will be all out to knock us off

In fact, they'll take great pleasure in disrupting our premiership chances.  That's the Aussie rules way ... teams enjoy playing spoiler

Any sort of win will do to nail down a top 4 spot

I do not see how we can keep Grundy in the side this week that would be a mistake. I think Tomlinson in to push Smith forward while Hibberd has another week to recoup as the sub may be our best option.

People calling for JJ out I’m not sure who his replacement is. Dunstan, Harmes and Woey being the options I imagine. Not a fan of any of them unfortunately. Jim you’re a lucky lad once again

Is it too much to ask for this team to be switched on in the 1st quarter for once?

And 4th Q too?

Spargo.  We need him in, and he was very good for Casey on the weekend.

We’ve got this… we will win and win well!!

Not to mention the Hawks have some zip through the middle. Must stick tackles.

  • CASEY: Richmond

The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace. They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
