PREGAME: Rd 22 vs Carlton

I sent email to Carlton earlier in week asking if there was any possibility they could show the Matildas game on the big screens pre our game.

They said...

At the same time, I sent similar message to MCG who said that whilst whatever is on the big screens is at the discretion of the home team and the AFL, that they would ensure the match is still shown around the ground on the screens that we are able to alter, as well as bars and food outlets.

So, maybe a reason to turn up the the G a bit early this week 🙂

Juts heard, it's going to happen.

Which is great.

I had planned to go to Fed square, but it will be impossible to get into it i reckon (unless you get there at 12pm).

And now i can just go the G, top of the Ponsford, get a good GA seat and watch the tillies roll the les bleus .

And then watch the dees roll the blues.

Sporting gold.

Didn't May keep Curnow quiet in our last match against them?  Surely as their only key target he would play on him again?  Smith for Martin?

That was impressive coaching by Goody and one of Steven May's best performances for the season. Curnow barely got a touch. Adam Tomlinsom was on McKay who was experiencing a patch of the goal scoring yips. At the start of the game I thought this is 'A' about but as the match unfolded it was a masterstroke. Curnow, the more dangerous player was totally negated by May. McKay got on the end of a few and kicked accurately but returned to his inaccurate ways as the evening wore on. Joel Smith played as a defensive forward, not prolific but there were some impressive cameos in the general play.

Some posters have downplayed the game as an unimpressive spectacle. As my only attendance for the season so far (I'm very much hoping the Demons go to the season decider). I was impressed, the 'anaconda mode' was switched full on (team contest and defense #1). Carlton were starved for oxygen and never really were a threat.

It's going to be a funny experience cheering on the tillies with blues fans and collectively celebrating their awesomeness (on a related note, there is still time for the AFL to realize the complete folly of sending AFLW teams to play on sub standard round all round the country - and don't get me started on only 10 rounds).

And then at exactly 7:30 realizing they are bunch of clueless bogans!

Haha! Hadn't thought of that.

If this goes ahead, hopefully the MCG also has the foresight to open the gates early.
Currently public/AFL reserve gate open time is 5.30pm, with just MCC at 5pm

Did the public interest in womens soccer start with the success the US team had in recent years?

Australia basically copies everything the yanks do.

Due to the power and massive influence of the 4th and 5th estates Im assuming its the corporate media that got the consumer fired up about womens soccer.

Australia has changed so much since i moved o/seas.  Its weird.

We aren't copying the yanks as such.  Its been a global movement, and the US have been big drivers admittedly.

Sam Kerr plays in the english league for Chelsea for example, and they regularly have big crowds.  The global game is getting huge and the quality of football is terrific.  Ellie has played in France for 5-6 years now

This sort of change is fantastic to see

It makes you wonder why the AFL were so keen on having 18 teams, when they had no plans for a proper season.... such an amateur organisation.

in: Oliver, Grundy

out: Harmes, Petty.

Petty is out for the season minimum. Gotta try this Grundy action, otherwise we'd be trying to get Mcdonald or BBB back in I'd imagine. I think Smith is offering exactly what the coaches want in the def, so I think they'll hold fat there.

Another potential out is JJ, as his inside mid time will drop with Oliver back I'd imagine. I think they like him in there over other roles, so might be a watch.

Weird assumption. I’d say it’s more to do with the team being pretty [censored] good, with some of the best players in the world.

The AFL is run by grossly overpaid amateurs but they cannot be expected to play AFLW games in AFL stadiums across the country. It would cost a fortune and crowds are very small.  The AFL is already dropping millions every year.

Tricky Gill should of established an umpire academy and turned umpiring into a F/T profession before fiddling around with AFLW.

Bunch of amateurs with too much money to play with.

Yes exactly, it is pleasing to see the gap closing between the US and other countries.

Think it was shambolic that it took Manchester United until 2018 to establish a Women's team.

Back to the USA, they hosted in 1999 (and won) and 2003 and I think this had a huge impact on the 'golden generation'  which won 2015 and 2019.  Not sure how much further the Matildas will go in this tournament but i think its legacy here will be that the tournament inspired many young girls to play the game and hopefully push the sport further here.

Keen for the Matildas/Demons bonanza!

Surely playing the Matildas will distract the players too...is it going to be up on a big screen in the stadium while the AFL game is being played is that what's happening?  If I was a player I'd be looking up checking the game heaps haha

Awesome they're playing the game at the same time, just curious how it will be shown.

It won't be on the screen once the game starts.

The only risk of an overlap is if it goes to penalties (which given how many full time draws there has been in this world cup - 13 I think - there is a fair chance it will).

Does anyone think it will take the midfield a while to adjust back to having Clarry in there?

A part of me wishes we played him last week to get back into it, but understand completely why that game was not worth the risk.

Timmy-Timmy said it, too.

I think there will definately be an adjustment. Viney and Gus have stepped up big time and the midfield had been humming. Of course clarry makes us a better team but there is a chance we take a while to click and that subconsciously other players in the midfield may drop off slightly as a result.

I'd be of the mind to play Gawn, Petracca, Oliver and Viney at the centre bounce in the first quarter and a half just to put the contest to bed. Let Petracca drift forward after that.

    TRAINING: Monday 29th April 2024

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f

It's Game Day and the Demons once again open the round of football with their annual clash against Richmond on ANZAC Eve. The Tigers, coached by former Dees champion and Premiership assistant coach Adem Yze have a plethora of stars missing due to injury but beware the wounded Tiger.
