With the amount of money the AFL has dumped into the GCS for no return, it would be negligent of them not to put a 3 time premiership winning coach into the role the minute he became available.

There is no point putting in another no name up there. The only way this club gets anywhere, regardless of how great their list is, is with a big name coach.

We had a big name stabilise us before a no name took over. GWS had the Sheeds charade and Choco and then gave the reigns to Leon Cameron who did a great job for a long time before staying too long. Fages turned around Brisbane.

Im not entirely convinced they need anyone but a good coach, but I can see why the AFL have removed a possibly good coach for a probably good coach.

You mean the one that was subbed out this week and is earning squillions!!

Nah mate, the other one. The one that gets a kick without umpire assistance!

I mean Hardwick is not a bad coach…. If he can’t get the best out of that list/club, then it’s time to fold it.

This is all a timely reminder that it’s now been over 10 years since we sacked a coach.

Our current coach has the best record of our last 17 coaches! I know we are dealing with the weight of expectation, but we should also appreciate that we are living through a great time to be a Melbourne supporter.

Hardwick's certainly been a great coach, there's just some doubt on whether he will be good yet alone great at the Suns if he goes there. Odd are he'll be at least good, but coaches do have mixed records second time around.

The news is sad, but not unexpected. I actually rate Dew highly as a coach, but the pattern of fade outs in the 2nd half of the season had to demand blood at some point.

With a lot of younger players 'buying in' recently, I can imagine some of them will be furious, but they also have to take some of the blame.

A lot of solid players have been left to rot in the magoos by Dew only to be best 22 at new clubs

None of us know, though, whether that's something to do with the players or the coach. Did those players only work hard enough to be selected when they reached their second club?

My understanding is that he told Roos he was not quite ready and needed more time. Suggests he's an honest man and a realist.

You can't say that for certain, as in reality the success of the coach is really linked to the playing group and the organisation behind him.  We improved when we got our house in order and finally got a great recruiter and better development.

If only they had a young tall forward who could offer connection leads up the ground, is competent delivering inside 50, and a reasonable shot on goal with a bonus ability to roost it from outside 50.

I can name have a dozen up there that would fit the bill.

When you say a lot what you really mean is 2. Peter Wright - who no one thought was actually good, and Jarrod Lyons who they strangely gave away for nothing to the Lions.

I dunno. All things considered I didn't think he he did a bad job in the last couple of seasons. Always losing players. Built a crazy good young midfield.

In two years, GC will be the best team in it.

I remember thinking that in 2013 myself.

Ifs, buts and maybes.

Maybe the club is fundamentally incapable of succeeding but 5 and half years is enough time to give any coach. No CEO in any walk of life survives that long delivering mediocrity.

I reckon Hardwick will get them to finals. They have the talent. The club would be remiss to pass on the opportunity to bring him in if he's keen.

Blimey. It’s one thing to sack a coach but something else to replace him with a horror story writer Steven King. What’s he ever done for football?

Re-arranged Jeff White's face? Now that was a horror show!

Steven King v Toby Greene?

It’s been a strange period in terms of coaches being sacked. Last year, the Saints re-appointed Brett Ratten as coach for 2023 but sacked him before he could start the pre-season and now Gold Coast sack their coach when they’re only 1½ games out of the top eight. If King manages to lift them to a few wins in a row this could get interesting.

When asked about it he said he’d gladly take the call. So he’s already he’s entertaining it and not shutting it down. Very high likelihood the jobs his already.

Ah ok then!  Thanks

Maybe the are hoping for a 'Roos after Eade' scenario.

Brenton Sanderson MKII. Too close to the players. A mate first, coach second.

Obviously not too close to Tex.  Got rid of his best mate.

Really feel for Dew. I reckon he has built a solid culture in the past couple of years and the Suns overall effort and team play is better than it's ever been.  They are closer to finals than anytime in the past 10 years and are without their best player.

Aside from the Pies loss they have been solid all year and are finally getting young players signed up.

I predict this move will cause more issues than it solves. The players will be furious. At least let the man coach the rest of the season

Not sure they have been solid all year, they have had some bad losses probably the worst one was to Carlton by 59 points who hadn’t won for weeks. They also lost to the Swans by 49, Saints 53, Lions 43 and Collingwood by 78. I can totally understand why they sacked Dew.
