Meanwhile we have a coach who has actually achieved something - he has won a flag, breaking a 57 year drought. 

He has coached 150 afl games, with a 58% win loss ratio. Won 5 of 8 finals he has coached, including 50 50 in prelims.

By way of contrast, clarkson, often hailed as the best coach of the modern era, had a win loss ratio at the hawks of 60%. 

Get back to me when mcrae can boast a record anywhere near as impressive as goodys.

Mcrae is on a hiding to nothing this year.

The pies are a fantastic team. But given the fact they have no record of success, other than some home and away wins, the expectations on them are just ridiculous.

People just seem to be accepting they will win the flag and are streets ahead of their rivals. The last time I can recall such expectation is the tigers in 2018. The big difference is the tigers wete coming off aligning a flag, not getting bundled put of the final in a prelim.

What happens if they don't win the flag? It will be viewed by most as a failure. Team and coach fail. Which is just ridiculous.

What does that do to the optimism and postive energy everyone seems to love about the pies? How does the team rebound?

Say it continues to dominate the 2024 home and away season. Two failed finals campaigns will hang over the club like a huge question mark shaped shadow.

I appreciate your patriotism, @binman, just think the wider footballing community doesn’t place as much emphasis on flags as you might.

Collingwood, as a business, do not need to do any more than they are right now. Every function sells out instantly, their merch flies off the shelf, fans fill stadiums and in turn the clubs coffers.

Furthermore, despite the fact we may be about to come good and are still very much in the hunt, a casual football fan is not going to tune into Melbourne and St Kilda tonight. I can guarantee you there were plenty of casual eyes on Collingwood and the Bulldogs last night.

    Both Brisbane and Gold Coast are supported by the Academy system and the clubs have virtually unfettered access to players who qualify for their respective academies. GCS have three members who are potential top 10 draft picks this year. It shouldn’t be too long before people are calling for an end to this advantage.

    Two of them potentially top 5 as well.

    Pretty sure they still get 20% discounts when matching bids in the first round.

    I dunno about this theory. Popularity as a measure of success, versus the ultimate achievement.

    More people have seen Gangnam Style than Citizen Kane. More people own a One Direction album than Ok Computer, The White Album or Highway 61 Revisited.

    The same could be said of the Eagles - who have 30,000 odd people paying for the privilege of being on a waiting list to become a member.

    The money is great - all power to the pies.

    But at the end of the day teams are judged on winning flags and having all the resources to do so adds further pressure.

    Funny thing is half the people whinging that we don't play an arousing enough game style, would be saying the complete opposite if our team was Collingwood. They'd be saying all that matters is premierships, playing an exciting brand during the H&A season that falls over during big finals means nothing without flags!

    I mentioned this in another thread about the Giants.

    Their 7-8 record flatters them.

    Sydney, Geelong and us all kicked themselves out of the contest against them and they were supremely accurate in all those games. Not sure if that’s sustainable.

    Surely the Dill can overturn the Gill absurd Friday night start times.   1900, or 1910 at the latest.

    Three points;

    Sydney currently and Gold Coast for the foreseeable future are only kept relevant by the massive draft concessions they've received for exactly that purpose. I'm stating the obvious but just putting it out there so none of us are left thinking we're alone in our anger.

    Don't worry there will be a total overhaul of all this stuff just as soon as the Demons have a prospective top-10 father-son pick.

    Genis Steel Oval must be the most vandalised playing field in the country.

    Who cares about functions selling out. There’s only one metric in sport and that’s winning. Let’s see how their smiling goes when we roll them in the first week of the finals.

      A few years ago, the Melbourne Football Club produced a documentary about the decade in which it rose from its dystopic purgatory of regular thrashings to the euphoria of a premiership victory. That entire period could have been compressed in a fast motion version of the 2025 season to date as the Demons went from embarrassing basket case to glorious winner in an unexpected victory over the Dockers last Saturday. They transformed in a single week from a team that put in a pedestrian effort of predictably kicking the ball long down the line into attack that made a very ordinary Bombers outfit look like worldbeaters into a slick, fast moving side with urgency and a willingness to handball and create play with shorter kicks and by changing angles to generate an element of chaos that yielded six goals in each of the opening quarters against Freo.

      Round 7 gets underway in iconic fashion with the traditional ANZAC Day blockbuster. The high-flying Magpies will be looking to solidify their spot atop the ladder, while the Bombers are desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top eight. Later that evening, Fremantle will be out to redeem themselves after a disappointing loss to the Demons, facing a hungry Adelaide side with eyes firmly set on breaking into the top four. Saturday serves up a triple-header of footy action. The Lions will be looking to consolidate their Top 2 spot as they head to Marvel Stadium to clash with the Saints. Over in Adelaide, Port Adelaide will be strong favourites at home against a struggling North Melbourne. The day wraps up with a fiery encounter in Canberra, where the Giants and Bulldogs renew their bitter rivalry. Sunday’s schedule kicks off with the Suns aiming to bounce back from their shock defeat to Richmond, taking on the out of form Swans.Then the Blues will be out to claim a major scalp when they battle the Cats at the MCG. The round finishes with a less-than-thrilling affair between Hawthorn and West Coast at Marvel. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?

      For this year’s Easter Saturday game at the MCG, Simon Goodwin and his Demons wound the clock back a few years to wipe out the horrible memories of last season’s twin thrashings at the hands of the Dockers. And it was about time! Melbourne’s indomitable skipper Max Gawn put in a mammoth performance in shutting out his immediate opponent Sean Darcy in the ruck and around the ground and was a colossus at the end when the game was there to be won or lost. It was won by 16.11.107 to 14.13.97. There was the battery-charged Easter Bunny in Kysaiah Pickett running anyone wearing purple ragged, whether at midfield stoppages or around the big sticks. He finish with a five goal haul.

    • CASEY: UWS Giants

      The Casey Demons took on an undefeated UWS Giants outfit at their own home ground on a beautiful autumn day but found themselves completely out of their depth going down by 53 points against a well-drilled and fair superior combination. Despite having 15 AFL listed players at their disposal - far more than in their earlier matches this season - the Demons were never really in the game and suffered their second defeat in a row after their bright start to the season when they drew with the Kangaroos, beat the Suns and matched the Cats for most of the day on their own dung heap at Corio Bay. The Giants were a different proposition altogether. They had a very slight wind advantage in the opening quarter but were too quick off the mark for the Demons, tearing the game apart by the half way mark of the term when they kicked the first five goals with clean and direct football.
