Finally, the line "fast ball movement thru the corridor and extreme pressure in the contest is the way to beat us" is silly - that's the way to beat every side. We're no different to anyone else. Gold Coast brought extreme pressure today. We handled it well enough to never let them take the lead.

That stat and ladder doesn’t really show anything as it includes both wins and losses. Geelong for example, lost CP badly in their three losses and won it easily in their 5 wins. It means they’re 6th on the ladder of it but it’s a hugely important stat when they’re winning. 

Our CP differential when we win is +31 (+58 before tonight).

When we lose it’s -20.

In fact tonight was the only MFC game this season where we lost CP by over 15 and lost all clearances (total, centre and stoppage) and won, and without Macpherson’s shank we nearly didn’t. 
 

Contest is the heart of our game, we’ve improved to find ways to win if we’re losing just contested possession or one type of clearance and that’s a big part of our improvement these last few years but our losses all have one thing in common. Losing CP.

I should have said they are LESS experienced than our premiership winning top 2 draft pick Norm Smith medalist Petracca who has played 158 games at 27, our two time AFL CA winning 4 time best and fairest winner draft pick number 5 Oliver who has played 154 games at 25 years old and our vice-captain Viney who has played 178 games at 29 years of age. They gave them an absolute bath. 
Im happy we still won, but in this game and our two losses this year our strength, contest, was soundly and completely beaten. We need to find a solution, fact. I note you ignore the stats I posted that completely proved my position and you immediately launched into draft picks and games played, hmmm. 
Anyway, I don’t come here to argue, but I think we’ll be working hard on stoppage and clearance this week and Trac, Clarry and Viney will be frustrated we were so well beaten in there.

Clarrie went berserk for the ball across the final quarter - not all pretty but it illustrated his intent. Combined with the drive from Viney and Tracca, it got us across the line, providing somewhat of a yardstick downfield that saw us win the game. Petty must go back to strengthen our backline and that will hopefully force our wingers to be more productive bringing the ball in. Midfield drive was tough, but acceptable last night and the GCS were revved (to their capacity) and eager to challenge (almost anything). I am sure they sensed an amount of umpire support that 'normally' might not have been granted. That alone is a great motivator for an improving side - as it creates opportunities for unpenalised play and thus, some creativity winning and using the ball. However, a tough-nut game was to be won and the Dees managed to get through (well-enough). Medics, trainers and a freshening of our players will be essential to a dominant scrubbing of Whoreform next game - and it is probably about time that we reduce our experimentation with player allocations and its alleged strengthening. We have the options and personnel to win every match - let's stick more honestly to how that has been highlighted.

This was a brilliant win against a seriously plucky side playing out of their skin, in tough conditions. Really rate it. We would have lost this match last year.

The scores were even at 3 quarter time and we were up during the game the entire time.

We didn't come from behind to win so that's an odd comparison. 

They also had an opportunity to draw the game, so they have themselves to blame. 

Happy to come away with four points, but we're inconsistent from week to week at the moment and I think Goodwin is covering up some cracks that are there that good teams will exploit. 

So, happy to win at this stage of the year but geez our backline look vulnerable and have for the entire start of this season.

Steven May looks like a shadow of the player he was. Lever was iffy again tonight and his ball use is atrocious coming out of defensive 50. Petty should be going back also. 

Lucky to win, but it'd be nice to have some consistency in performance in certain areas atm.

Good to get those 4 points. They came at us and we hung in there.

Went to the Sporting Globe in Richmond. No atmosphere, no commentary for the first 15 minutes (playing Adelaide v Geelong). Only one Melbourne supporter in the room I'm was in. Could anyone suggest a public place to watch when we aren't in Melbourne, that is in the Prahran, Richmond, inner city areas?

 

I was at the Globe too!! I was upstairs. There was more than one Demons' supporter there ... me and a friend, 2 guys (looked to be in their thirties) and another guy (Demons scarf) late 20s with 3 lovely women (who weren't Dees supporters). I was groaning when Macpherson was about to take the shot for goal. One of the lovely women turned to me and said "he'll miss". When he missed, she said with a smile "told you!!". (She was a Cats' supporter.)

But Maxy, tracc (how about thst goal?) Oliver and Viney stood up and won us the game. Worth watching just for that. Generational stars. 

We won another last quarter, meaning we have yet to lose one this season. 

Kozzie did some brilliant things in the first half. And brodie roved Max and snapped a goal.

The last minute was pulsating.

They had a shot to ensure at least a draw.

I won't tell you what happened next (note to self: what was may thinking?).

It would have been no shame to draw (the most likey result if that set shot had been a goal) so to get four points is a fantastic result.

A lot to like.

Or you could watch a couple episodes of MAFS instead.

Anderson's game was extraordinary, especially given the opposition. He looks like being an absolute superstar 

I'm pretty glass half full - Suns are very good at home, we won inside 50s by a fair margin (albeit other metrics weren't great) and game would have been iced half way through the last if Fritsch kicked straight (which he normally does and I expect he will do in future)

Great game to watch. Made a good argument for night games up North in the NT and northern QLD

Bring on a 20th team in NT I say as the hot and humid weather will be a decent equalizer that produces matches of that quality. Exhausting encounters that are full of drama.

Will be far more interesting that the boredom of seeing another  3rd WA/SA team running around.

(Just don't bring up the economics)

May did not look 100% at all. Looked slow and stiff. He needs a week or two off

Didn’t see game however was at the Brisbane game earlier in the year where we didn’t handle the slippery ball well. Didn’t suit our skills. Was it the same last night? Lost clearances again I see. Any win on the road is good is how I see it

I really enjoyed that game. And yes we were lucky to win but I am proud our boys were mature enough to win, when we probably should not have. The Gold Coast showed they have what it takes to be a very good footy team. Rowell early took it up to clarry and tracs by beating them at contested ball. The coaches put more work into him to nullify his influence and then Noah Anderson was as good as I have seen a player play in our competition. With some luck Gold Coast should play finals this year with that performance. 

Proud of the boys for finding a way to win against a very good opponent.

I’ll take the win but faarr out we’re we lucky to get it. We just couldn’t put them away. We started off brilliantly and I thought we’d smash them. Never saw that brilliance again in the match. Very hard to watch. I’m glad they never got in front as I think that’d give them the extra boost they’d needed and we’d have never gotten it back.

So glad we’re not playing them again. Gold Coast used to be a guaranteed win.
Glad all 26 of their supporters turned up 🤣

Sure. Bit without Fritsch's three shanks, Viney's shank etc we win comfortably.

Even if Macpherson kicks the goal we still come away with a draw not a loss.

2.8 Ruckman who grabs the ball from a boundary line throw in or in a ruck contest. If a ruckman elects to grab the ball instead of hitting it and is tackled, then it will be an automatic free kick against that ruckman. He will not be given the benefit of prior opportunity. 
This happened to Chol tonight and no comment from the umpires or commentators, no free kick. Has the rule changed?

I was at the game and this “dew” and slippery ball comment is not accurate.  We went for a kick after the game and there was little moisture. And that was at 7:15.  Ball handling wasn’t so much the issue. 
 

I agree we were simply outmuscled or outsmarted at the clearances.  We had our A graders in there and guys like Rowell (11 clearances) and Anderson 10) won out.  Trac (8) and Clarry (6) were beaten but still were excellent all night and tried their guts out.  Viney was Witts also was very good and was break even (35 to 33 hitouts) v Gawn and Grundy.  There’s work to do on Clearances especially Centre clearances where we have been down in prior two seasons.  

It was closer than it needed to be as our accuracy was off. They put similar if not greater pressure than Essendon put on us and we got belted that game. Winning in different ways eh?
