1958 Grand final

Featured Replies

Who wore Number 6 in the 1958 Grand Final please.

Asking for a friend...

I was only a little kid so I only really remember (sadly) the result.

However, I believe there was some strange issue regarding player numbers in that game. ( I don't remember where/why that memory popped up though )

Number 6 was Peter Brenchley on the day. The Sun had published player numbers on the day so the VFL forced players to wear alternate numbers. E.g Barassi wore number 2 instead of 31.

Obviously why we lost.

Bugger you David.  I was still trying to erase 1958 from my memory.

If lifes troubles are getting you down, watch the third quarter, Fritta, Fritta, Brownnnnn

(Ima Poet and I dont know it)

I spoke to Geoff Tunbridge about the match and he related to me that Norm Smith trained the players very hard on thursday night at the MCG which very muddy and the players were flat as a result, Norm Smith did not make that mistake again in 1960.

I don't know why but I watch the newsreel highlights of this game often on Youtube. I guess it's just good to see some of the rare footage of those times.

I always just used to think how great it would have been to play for a team led by John Beckwith and RDB.

Yes if I need a smile, the last quarter is pretty good as well, but the dogs thought they were a chance 19 points up.  So did I, went and washed dishes. Came back quick

Wouldn't it have been Bluey Adams?

Oh, I didn't know they did that!  Thanks for that bit of info!

I was very, very young though at the game.
Without that loss we'd have won 6 in a row.
But don't worry, I'm not bitter. Wouldn't want to hold a grudge or anything 👺🏆

Such a bizarre ruling by the VFL to force players to change numbers

Disgraceful to disrupt a team like that

It was the first game of Aussie Rules I'd seen - my grandmother was one of the first television owners in North Sunshine, paid for it in installments from a lovely mustached Yekke Travelling Salesman called Herr Berger - and, as usual, I hoped the losing side would win. Next year, at Our Lady's Sunshine, a Greek boy asked me who I barracked for. I said, Melbourne. He replied, Wow, they are a great team. The game I'd watched was, of course, the 1958 Grand Final.  It took a lot of guts and courage to NOT be a Footscray supporter where I was brought up. Then again, I was always my own man. Paid for it, many Lumpen Prol head punches, the lingua franca of life in Australian working class suburbs in the 50's and 60's. Didn't help being a so-called 'New Australian'....

Both teams were forced to change numbers.  The only exception was Collingwood's Ray Gabelich who retained his #13 because they couldn't find another jumper big enough to fit his substantial girth.

The Filth became Snipers because no one knew who they were…

I sat by the old race drenched (by rain and tears). Still angry with the result and now channel that anger towards the filth till the day I die.

I've heard Murray Weideman say quite proudly that he and Hooker Harrison made it their job that day to take out players.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

It’s late February. Two teams widely predicted to finish near the foot of the AFL table in 2026 face off against each other in sweltering 30-degree heat deep in outer suburbia in a match simulation with fresh new faces and uneven team numbers. There are no nearby sheep stations on offer; the result promises nothing more than bragging rights for the winner. Nevertheless, the loser appears hopelessly adrift, whereas the other seems to have found its footing after a couple of years of struggle – perhaps a hint at bigger things to come?
