Trade Rumours 2023

Nascent

I believed I may have added a little spice to the morning. Sincerely, I don't believe P6 and 11 will be sufficient if we are to obtain P1. To seal the deal we might have to part ways with one of our top 22 players.

Jack Darling career goals - 510

Tom McDonald career goals - 165

Ben Brown career goals - 353

He’s still a far better player than those two currently and he’s always been better over the journey.

I didn’t actually realise he’d been that prolific, West Coast did well keeping Kennedy and Darling for as long as they did

Pick 1 and Darling for Pick 6 and JVR. Go big on King next year. Have plenty of Cap space. Good chance Curtain will be available for them at P6.

Very appealing.

I know it’s sacrilege on here, but I think JVR is a tradeable asset provided we cover the KPF depth he provides.
An astute appraisal I heard of JVR doubted he’d ever be a tier 1 forward due to the lack of goal scoring in general play. He’s a lead> mark/free> kick goal type of player. There’s not much of the opportunistic goal poaching or snaps from the boundary, etc.

Plays his role to aplomb for a kick, but I think we overrate his potential.

JVR isn't KPF depth. He was essentially our no.1 KPF this year in his 1st season of AFL, and had to take on ruck duties later in the year. Naturally he tired, and his performance suffered.

As for the astute appraisal, what are the main avenues to goal for the likes of Lynch, Hawkins, King brothers. Larkey, Mitch Lewis, Marshall? I don't see them as goal poachers.

And how does our forward structure look if Ben King doesn't become available next year?

he would 22 on our list of 22 players we are prepared to trade.

giving up our best young player, a proven young player for a speculative pick (even if no 1 pick, no guarantees) is not going to happen

31 is not too old. Look at Hawkins. Tex Walker looked done but has just had a career best season at the age of 33.

Let the medical team run the rule over him. If they think he has gas left in the tank and can stay fit for a couple of more seasons, then he could be a good option. absolutely depends on his body. If we think it'll hold up then go for it.

Please don’t compare Darling to Hawkins and Tex

I wouldn't dismiss the idea of Darling.

If his head and body are right he's still a 40 goal forward.

van Rooyen is going nowhere, but it does open the possibility of the club doing a deal with Petty.

Petty for 10 and 14, or 10 plus McAdam...

Personally, I'd keep Petty but it makes the last few days very interesting.

6, 10, and 11 for ONE and Darling.

So do I.

I really like JVRs progress, but if we could improve our broader list by trading him, it wouldn't be off the table for me. Particularly, if there's any hesitation in signing long term.

Would 6 + 10 + 14 do it? That way we can keep 11 and get up with our F1 to nab O'Sullivan and finish with Reid, O'Sullivan and Darling. Dream scenario. Maybe too dreamy.

Wow. Lets trade a pack marking kid who kicks 28 goals in his debut year of AFL footy. AND pick 6 for a pick 1 messiah. Whilst there lets take a washed up undersized forward who has shown a lack of work rate.

I have now heard everything.

Yeah I'm utterly perplexed by the proposal that some on here are willing to trade a first year key forward who's kicked nearly 30 goals in his debut year.

The kid is going to be one of thr power forwards of the competition in years to come.

Our key talls is dire and we want to trade away for further draft capital? Yikes..

We have been patient with JVR, really taken the time to develop him...

... He plays a solid 28 goal debut year, and there's the possibility we trade him for a MAYBE (midfield) star and a KPF who kicked LESS goals this year than a kid on debut????

JVR will increase his output next year. Hell, we may even start to kick to leading forwards in 2024. Lower the eyes etc. Could be 40-50 goals if we don't keep bombing it on his head.

Silly trade thought.

NO

THANK YOU

From a newspaper today over in the West:

Jack Darling: West Coast Eagles forward on trade table as part of potential North Melbourne No.1 pick deal

West Coast has made veteran forward Jack Darling available for trade if it helps the Eagles turn pick one into a life raft of early draft selections.

As North Melbourne, Melbourne and Hawthorn clamber to entice the Eagles to part with the coveted first selection in the November 20 AFL national draft.

The West Australian understands Darling is on the table, but only at the right price.

Complicating the matter is the 31-year-old has a young family and does not want to leave Perth.

The Eagles’ premiership player also has two years remaining on a five-year contract, worth about $800,000 per season, which will also come into salary cap calculations in any negotiations.

The Kangaroos have already shown interest and insiders suggest Melbourne would also be willing to take on Darling to help solve its forward line riddle.

The Demons, Kangaroos and Hawks are desperate to gain the No. 1 pick so they can draft gun Victorian youngster Harley Reid.

North Melbourne added pick 3 to 2, 3, 15, 17, 18, 57, and 65 to its suite after Ben McKay’s free agency move to Essendon.

It gives the Roos the whip hand to package up a deal, which is where Darling may come into play.

The Kangaroos have already made an offer of picks 15, 18, 21, and a future end-of-first-round for No. 1 — an ambit claim that was quickly rejected by the Eagles – with stronger offers expected to come in the last three days of the AFL’s Trade Period which winds up on Wednesday.

Darling could be an ideal addition to the North Melbourne attack alongside Nick Larkey as the Kangaroos look to add experience and depth to the forward line.

But Melbourne is also poised for a play at Reid and entered the bidding war when it secured pick 11 from Gold Coast to No. 6 which it landed via Fremantle last year in the Luke Jackson deal.

The Demons have picks 6, 11, 42, and 47 at their disposal and view a player with Darling’s experience as crucial with their premiership window open.

The Demons have struggled to kick winning scores this season with key targets Ben Brown and Tom McDonald missing large chunks and forcing them to park Brodie Grundy and Max Gawn in the forward 50. Jake Melksham is also out for 12 months with an ACL and Grundy has now joined Sydney.

Harrison Petty has knocked back an offer to move to Adelaide, but may look at it again at the end of next season.

West Australian Demon Jacob van Rooyen is contracted til the end of 2025 and is seen as a key part of Melbourne’s future plans, but might be expendable if Reid is the reward.

An offer of six, 11 and van Rooyen would be hard for the Eagles to turn down, unless the Roos slap down a trump hand.

Hawthorn is not considered in play for Darling as it chases Mabior Chol from Gold Coast and is in negotiations with Brisbane for premiership player Jack Gunston to return to the club.

The Eagles are also keen on pick two or three so they can secure one of their prime draft targets, Claremont defender Daniel Curtin.

Apart from Darling’s reluctance to move, the Eagles are also keen to hang on to experience, following the retirement of veterans Luke Shuey, Shannon Hurn and Nic Naitanui.

Darling was firm in his belief he wanted to remain a one-club player when he re-signed in 2019.

“I grew up supporting the Eagles, so to be here for my entire career is something I’ll look back on proudly,” Darling told the West Coast website.

“I always thought I was going to be a one-club player. I’m just really excited that the club has backed me in like they have my whole career.”

Darling has played 277 games, including 20 this season.

He sits on 510 goals and 265 behinds over his AFL career, third on the Eagles’ all-time list behind Josh Kennedy (712) and needs only another four to equal Peter Sumich in second position.

Darling’s 26 goals in 2023 was his lowest tally since his debut season in 2011.

Yes
Petty is a star, could be the best swingman since Terry Daniher however if he doesn’t see himself as a LONG term Demon then I think it’s the right time to consider a trade.

Petty may finish as a better player than Van Rooyen, maybe not, but considering all things, including injury concerns, Petty should be the one for possible trade.

However only if a great deal is offered that includes a KP forward ie.
Pick 10 and Fogarty Plus McAddam.

ps. If we are so keen on Harley Reid but don’t have the capital, why not use it to prise an existing young midfielder like Jai Newcombe 22yo.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
