The fellow must have had a white cane ........ surely !!!

Shame on you for picking on the disabled WCW !!!!

Maybe compared to him and his cohort of undesirables I did appear posh.

As for him being disabled, he almost ended up that way, or worse. We were in the front row of the nosebleed section and he kept leaning over the fence to spew out insults at our players. I toyed with the idea of kicking his feet out from under him which would’ve sent him plummeting to the ground below. His kids being there to witness their dad’s death or permanent  disfigurement is all that stopped me.

Moreover, he had his kids with him! The poor things were so ashamed of him. At one point I caught eyes with the little girl and she attempted to muster a feeble smile, surreptitiously of course because god only knows what he would’ve said had he seen her smiling at a “stuck-up, posh piece of sh!tt Melbourne supporter” his words, not mine. Thing is, of the insults that he threw my way, that one didn’t bother me since it couldn’t be further from the truth. 😁

Hashtag Bogan and proud of it. 🤗

Good on you!

But oooft those poor kids!  Behaving like that at a football game, it makes you worry how he might behave at home...

They were giving it to me in that 2018 final and I actually thought some of their garbage was pukeworthy.

At the end of the game I just smiled at them as they skulked away.

Ah yes, a sweet memory. Thank you for that.

The ONE good thing about Hawthorn supporters is that they didn't vote to merge....and for that we should all be grateful.

Either did we.

Dismiss Carlton at your peril. Sure they have been a joke for nearly 3 decades but I think they're on the right track and will be pushing for top 4. That's my hot tip.

If it weren't for Walsh's injury I would be 100% with you. I think they'll be top 4 too (maybe 85% haha)

I was there at Dallas Brooks Hall in 1996 and the amount of people locked out with no merger signs was incredible.  They never got to vote.

The emotion in the room is something I'll never forget.  It was overwhelmingly anti merger.

The vote was close - 4,679 to 4,229 - and this would have been challenged in the courts if needed.

The process was a sham, including Billy Guest getting employees who didn't even support Melbourne to sign up and vote pro merger.

A dark period that thankfully we're well past.  But I don't thank Hawthorn supporters one bit.

No team is more deserving of a long stint of mediocrity and missing finals than Hawthorn. Please God make it so.

You're unfamiliar with Essendon I take it?

Agree with all of that.  It was a truly dodgy exercise....but we didn't have to finish up in the courts for months for a resolution, simply because Hawthorn voted against it.

Ditto Gonzo, ditto. Hawthorn does not light a candle on them.

I think it's hilarious Essendon haven't won a final for so long.

And I would love if the Hawks suffered the same fate.

Was zoned to Hawthorn - played all my rep footy there and under 15s/17s - when they disbanded the comp to start the u18s comp.... stupidly declined the invite to train at Toorak the following year - thought yr12 was more important... every single bloke who went there was drafted... a couple of them (certain twins) are still senior coaches.....

Got yelled at by a certain hard nosed coach named Yabbie - for being bent over vomiting at training.... after doing what I thought was the biggest gut running session of my life. "YOU'LL NEVER MAKE IT AT HAWTHORN DOING THAT....."

[censored] I hate Hawthorn. With a passion  (Although was actually pretty cool that Dipper and Dermie and Tucky and a couple of the other superstars would often come down and train with us before the seniors came out proplerly)

The success there in that era really was incredible, very jealous of the 80s for them. Hate them.

Being at optus in 2021 for the Granny with my then 8 year old son, the decades of relief well and truly made up for the pain of watching Hawthorn up close and personal

[censored] Hate them

Forgive me for venting but I strayed on to Big Footy this morning and found myself reading a thread on the Hawks forum with the headline ‘Why is Hawthorn so great’? As exercises in self delusion it can’t be beaten. I wanted to answer it, but turns out I don’t have reply rights on BF so I am letting rip here.

They make a few points but all annoying. Here goes: Anyone alive has seen more Hawthorn premierships than any other (13 - this much is true); the Coodabeens used to have a joke that the Grand Final was the final match of the year when someone played Hawthorn. Elsewhere they bang on about St Kilda having no right to try to establish a stronger presence in the south east because that is Hawthorn territory.

Anyone who has read Between The Flags would know how much of this is self-serving BS. Hawthorn’s presence in the south east, and eight of those 13 premierships are in large part due to the introduction of country zoning in 1967.

St Kilda was the sole inhabitant of the south east when country zones came in and was counting on being assigned the Mornington Peninsula but the Saints were premiers at the time and Hawthorn, well Hawthorn was rubbish and bumbling about in the bottom third of the ladder, so luckily, or suspiciously, Hawthorn was assigned the talent-rich MP- West Gippsland zone that the Saints had prepared for by moving to Moorabbin.

They also boast of having voted - “unlike that other mob” - to have opposed a merger, and again, any who has read Between The Flags knows that is a misreading of what happened.

The truth is, we were once like them. Melbourne originally had one great advantage in recruiting, which was the fact we played at the best ground in the state, probably the nation. For a quarter of a century we made the most of it, then times changed. Hawthorn likewise had one great advantage, their amazing country zone and good luck to them, they made the most of it.

But its’ infuriating that they think their success is down to their own virtue. I know I made that same mistake about us.

On another matter, they also sling off at St Kilda trying to increase its presence in the south east because that is “Hawthorn territory”. See paragraph four above to understand the falseness of that self-delusion.

So I’ll pose another question: Why are Hawthorn supporters so full of it? All contributions gratefully accepted.

Ex Hawker here.
I switched to Melbourne in 1965

Ditto, I was five when Melbourne won its flag in 64.  My older brother (6) and next door neighbour supported the Dees. I made the switch.

It was a long 57 years for me but it was worth the wait.

Said it before,  I was fortunate enough to attend the GF in Perth (legally).  The only thing left for me is to see them do it at the G.🤞Can’t wait!  GO DEES!!

The last game of footy I went to with my mum was against Hawthorn. It was 2014 late in the season and she died a week after the Grand Final.
My mum never swore but she did turn to me that day and say something like  "We have to smash those [censored] one day. I hope you get to see it". Ever since, I've had a special tingle when we beat Hawthorn. F**k them.

Because they've won the lottery of life being Hawthorn fans.

Have they though? Their sense of fashion is to walk around looking like the MCG toilets after a Richmond/Collingwood game.

In 2008 my 4y.o. son's day care centre manager pulled me to one side to let me know that he had been walking around all day saying that Hawthorn supporters were scum!  Whilst we agreed that he was not far from the truth, I did have to ask him to perhaps keep that fact to himself when at daycare.

Glad we won our drought breaking Premiership in 2021 just to shut them up!

The Hawthorn Cheer Squad has always looked like a Huge unflushed Public Toilet.
In 1987 after the Preliminary Final my car was blocked in by the Hawthorn Cheer Squad van.

2 hours of their arrogant celebrations i had to endure.
I will still hate that Club long after i am Dead and Gone

I've felt sick every time I saw a flag won that wasn't ours.
Even in ours I was feeling crook early in the 3rd.

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
