so, if kozzy hasn't signed with 6 games left in the season.....

and keeping in mind the jackson saga....

do we keep playing him or promote someone else?

Thats  the last thing we want. Another player refusing to re-sign throughout the 23 seasonm We want his commitment by R1.

From what I understand, Koz moved from WA to SA during his teen years and lived with family there which he is still very close with. I don't think the chances of his mum asking him to move back are very high, but there's always the scenario that losing his mum has made him consider being closer to family again. On top of that, I believe his dad lives in SA these days.

That info doesn't increase my confidence of him staying.

If he is staying, we need to get it done fairly quickly, to avoid a repeat of last year's LJ distraction.

It is a distraction, both on and off the field.

Port traded in all of their chips to get JHF. They have no trade capital in R1 this year as of right now. They would need to move talent to get into Round 1 this year and they don’t have too many players they can afford to let go that would get them that.

That’s if Kozzy decides to go.

Have you learnt nothing? Freo had no capital to get the Jackson deal done either. Certainly not to the level we wanted. It doesn't matter. The player has all the power particularly when OOC.

After the Jackson saga last year I don’t have much faith Kozzie will be sticking round. He already has a new contract offer from dees in front of him for a while now, if he hasn’t signed yet it’s unlikely he will. Only question is when do dees start blooding a replacement rather than putting more games into another teams player as of 2024.

Freo didn’t get away with a bargain. We all have to take our demons glasses of. It was still under a IMV but not by a lot. LJ still is more upside than proven value.  He had maybe 2-3 good games this year and 1 outstanding. That is what the pundits see and that is what Freo paid. LJs lack of professionalism probably cost is the difference in the end. Had he showed some real desire to get the best out of Freo , he would have.

Kozzy on the other hand has shown his worth on far many more occasions and in NPV terms worth a hell lot more. Port have got nothing to trade atm but I know that doesn’t count for squat. Question is who do they trade out next year to get a top 10 pick. Freo at least had something to bargain with. Port have no 1st rounders and we ain’t doing a deal with a F1 as they’ll finish top 8.

Hopefully we have some additional free cash from the new EBA that will kick in on 2024 that we can backload into his new contract offer. I suspect that once the increase in salary cap becomes clearer Kozzys’ management will know in real terms (not %) and they’ll make a decision soon after that.

If that was the case no one would be looking to leave us. We've won more games than any other team over the last couple of years.

This won't be about success but geography, family and crowds. If he prefers the town of Adelaide, having family around, and big adoring one-eyed crowds, you couldn't blame him for leaving for port. We love him but he spends a lot of the year doing ridiculous stuff in front of a sparse or quiet MCG.

But more than any other player we've had leave the club, he's the one I really want to stay. Whereas I was somewhat resigned with Jesse and Jackson, I'll be utterly heartbroken if kossie leaves.

An extremely rare player, a rare endurance-speed combo, supreme skill off either foot, significant power (kicking 55 with his frame is not easy), disciplined and defensive without the ball, spunk flash brilliance and marketable all round. One of my favourite ever MFC players and he really is just scratching the surface at 21....he's well on track to be far better than any of the modern day small forwards (including Cyril and Eddie at the same age). There are very few small forwards that have kicked 40+ in consecutive years around period, let alone at the age of 21.

I wanted us to pick him and was thrilled when we made the reach in the first round.

Wouldn't be fair for someone else to benefit from the risk we took and investment we've made - I want to be watching him at the G for the next 10 years. We will be a significantly worse team without him and he was a very large part of the flag year.

Unfortunately if he does leave, it won't be for two first rounders. Even the best small forwards don't have that kind of currency - Rankine's recent value is about the best we could hope for.

I really hate that there is a thread for this. Saddening.

" Big adoring one eyed crowds" you say what about the figures of crowds in 2022?

We were fifth for the season much more than Port!

Ports away crowds are pitiful so they are not good for him as you say.

we will do every thing possible to keep Kossie as we are nearer a glad than Port also.

Kossie  has played in front of 50,000 about 12/15 times.with us  Port hasn't got  that crowd unless a showdown.

I’ll wait to see if Kozzie develops the dodgy knee syndrome around midway through the season like what happened with Scully and Jackson.

I wouldn’t think crowd size has any relevance to his decision.

Can’t afford to lose Kozzie. He’s already a match winner and one of the best small forwards in the league. He’d be a far worse loss to us than Jackson.

IF he does want out back to SA, Port have nothing to give us, so we’d have to deal with Adelaide and the only way we would begrudgingly do a deal is if Rachele is part of the deal.

Cant afford to lose him though. He’s a star in a required position for us. It took us years to find a good small forward and we have no small forwards on the list anywhere near Kozzies capability in terms of scoring power (40+ goals a year) and quick defensive pressure.

Lock him into a long deal please. 8 years will suffice!

Purely as a contingency, I'll be death-riding Port as well as Freo in 2023, just to make sure they can offer us at least a top-5 pick and change. ;)

But seriously, Kysaiah Pickett is a rare player. Not many forwards - let alone small forwards - top 40 goals in a season in consecutive seasons, and he has managed in every full season he's played!

That's why MFC will miss him .Jackson was mostly potential but Kossi has alreadyvshown what he can do and his potential is that he is set to build on it.

It's going to be very disappointing

Adelaide already got Rankine, so doubt they’d load up on another high value small forward.

I just want to jump in here and say I never imagined this thread might become 2022/23's 'Farewell Luke Jackson'. Now that it's sprouting as that, though, I'm at least glad about the comparatively positive (Kozzitive?) title!

Keep the good vibes coming, folks, wherever you can find them! Maybe Kozzy will feel them 🙏🏽

If they get a chance they'll grab him. They'd reject his advances???

MFC must re-sign him  asap. Were into 2023 already.

To keep the good vibes generating, a 'book' on the date he re-signs.

I'll start: The week following Anzac Eve's demolition of the yellow blackhearts, in front of one of those many-tens-of-thousands crowds.

Well if we can’t take Kozzie staying to the bank, can we at least take it to the bank that you’ll be staying ET? We all need at least some New Year cheer 😉

Correct. The Crows have invested in Rankine and Rachele so I can't see why they would go after Kozzie and have to give away a lot to get him. Kane Cornes agenda is always about Port and they do need small pressure fwds...as well as other positional players :-) But Port would need to give up similar or better to the Rankine deal. The Suns got pick 5, a future third and fourth round selection.

I think Kozzy has become one of my favorite players for a long time, not just because of his talent, but i think he generates excitement within the supporter base like few have, I'm going back to the Wiz, Jurrah, Jako days. A player that when he gets within 20m of the ball you end up watching him as much as you watch teh play.

Kids love him, the players love him, the club love shim. I hop ewe do everything to keep him, i fear its going to be a battle, only because he has not signed yet, but that's pessimism only. I truly think if he decides to sign on, may only be 2 years, it would give that entire place a lift. He is that important in my opinion. I know that no one is bigger than the club and we would survive if he left, be compensated and all that, but culturally, i think he shapes as one of the biggest signatures to secure for a while.

Seriously cant wait for footy season now, out in straight sets should be a very sour taste in players mouths, windows dont stay open forever, we have to bounce back strong, and i am certain we will.

He may not be our best player, but he's arguably out most irreplaceable player.

I can't think of a small forward that would be on the market that kicks 45 goals a season with the tricks and defensive pressure that Kozzie provides.

At least with Jackson departing we got a readily replaceable player with a chip on his shoulder and hopefully a point to prove.

It will be a set back for 2024 if he does end up departing.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
