I don't get the angst over the Round 1 fixture.  Just what is it that posters are whinging about?

it's contrived... how many contrived rounds can one stand

AFL should just let the season and fan interest build naturally

Also just realised that there’s no AFL game in Perf for round 1. Both teams in Victoria!

The local radio talkback stations are going to blow up over this. 😂

Optus unavailable due to Sheerhan Concert recovery time lapse.
Dont know why didn't have a Derby on Mon Night!!!
Or play at Cockburn Oval.!

All WA playing in Melbourne in round one?

Sounds sorta ‘Magic‘

So Thursday becomes Gold Coast vs Port Power at Townsville?
where!s your sense of theatre!!! ???

Every round is "contrived" if you want to look at it  that way.  It's a fixture after all, not a draw.

I don't see what's wrong with having an opening round featuring evenly matched teams.

Jackos mum won't like that

Naturally, Collingwood’s game against Geelong – Geelong’s home game – is at the MCG.

What a surprise.  🙄

And I wonder how long it will take for Dees v Dogs to become “a traditional round 1 game”.   It took about 2 or 3 years for ANZAC Day to become traditional Col v EssUndone and similar time for opening game to be Car v Toiges.

I can’t believe how petty it was that the AFL released the round 1 fixture during the Socceroos game.

It’s just the most childish thing to do. It’s laughably immature.

And yet there is nuffies on the socials defending it. Most likely clowns who follow no other sports, not even cricket.

technically, it was scheduled to be released 'exclusively' by the sunday herald-sun - they'd been promoting that earlier in the week before oztraya vs argentina was even a possibility

i'll also run the counterview - i think it's smart cross-marketing to release just as kick off was happening with so many sports afficionados up and watching the soccer this morning; makes sense to capture captive eyeballs

I don’t understand either.

A Saturday night home round 1 game against a team that we have a good recent rivalry with at the G, with the weather being mild and the game being on FTA, and yet people need to complain??

We may not get so many night games this year with four teams finishing ahead of us wanting the bright lights.  And Carlton, Ess and Bulldogs will as usual get more than their ladder position warrants.

I would rather have our night games in Mar to May than June to Aug and hopefully the night games in the winter months are in the warmer states.  The MCG is bitter at night in winter.

As an aside, I note the AFL has brought forward the Friday night game but by only 10 minutes to 7.40 pm.  Bit of a token effort given nearly everyone wants it at the same time as Thursday (7.20pm) or Saturday (7.25pm) night.

I've no problems with the AFL matching teams to create competitive or "controversial" fixtures in Round 1. Beats having the Tiges belting rubbish Carlton teams on opening night like we had for a number of years.

We play every team once. We'll play 5 teams twice, 3 top teams and 2 middle ranking. That much isn't too controversial

There will always be unfairness given we don't play each team twice but the non-rotation of home and away is the bit that really irks me. Why do we always play the Cats at GMBHA and West Coast at Optus? And why do certain teams dodge playing at GMBHA. It's so blatantly unfair.

The thing is WWSW, the AFL could’ve released the round 1 fixture as early as last night yet they chose to wait until mid-Socceroos match. The only reason I can think of is that they couldn’t announce it last night because of the fact that it was a HS exclusive. But if that’s the reason, why announce it at all?

Anyways let’s see how they handle the release of the magic round on Tuesday and then the release of the entire season on Thursday, just hope there’s no pesky clash with other sports. 🙄

My niece has a school play on Tuesday. I bet the b*stards at AFL HQ are already planning how to steal her thunder.

I was convinced we would be playing Geelong in Geelong in rd 1 but I suppose it will be the last game of the year just so we can whinge about it all season.

Most are complaining about the announcement "colliding with" the Socceroos!!

Really in fact the AFL had arranged the Round1 announcement  clearly before the FIFA game occurred and is committed to two further dates this week to complete up to Round15 by Thursday. What did  the complainants do  while the soccer game was on? Presumably most were at home watching somewhere and had access to a phone or newspaper with a casual glance sufficient at first and in-depth read after the game.

If fans can't separate 2 items in their life like earlier today I hate to visualise the mess their diaries are in.

For the record we play Western Bulldogs on SAT 18 March 2023 at the MCG a Home Game at 7.25pm.

Now all of us can go back to our tapes of Tracey Grimshaw's last show oh No I just realised I taped over it with the last race from Dapto Dogs on that night. Life is just so complicated with all these modern devices  like recorders and iPhones!! No wonder they say we men can't do 2 things at once!!!

Just get there in Round1 folks when we spoil Bevo's extended contract news and enable Hunter and Schache and Brodie to play freely in their first games for their new Club. Wonder if their recycled No3 ( Cody W ) is still ducking his head?

Isn't the 'magic' round fixture due out today

I can see the Dogs getting more than their share of night games...again.  Never ends.  Protected by umpies.  Promoted by the AFL!!

The Herald Sun have just revealed when Grundy and the Dees will play Collingwood, but it's behind a paywall.

Would find it amusing if you signed up and paid to see the article only for the Herald Sun to announce it's the Kings Birthday.

  • NON-MFC: Round 12

Round 12 kicks off with the Brisbane hosting Essendon at the Gabba as the Lions aim to solidify their top-two position against an injury-hit Bombers side seeking to maintain momentum after a win over Richmond. On Friday night it's a blockbuster at the G as the Magpies look to extend their top of the table winning streak while the Hawks strive to bounce back from a couple of recent defeats and stay in contention for the Top 4. On Saturday the Suns, buoyed by 3 wins on the trot, face the Dockers in a clash crucial for both teams' aspirations this season. The Suns want to solidify their Top 4 standing whilst the Dockers will be desperate to break into the 8.

  • PREVIEW: St. Kilda

The media has performed a complete reversal in its coverage of the Melbourne Football Club over the past month and a half. Having endured intense criticism from all quarters in the press, which continually identified new avenues for scrutiny of every aspect, both on and off the field, and prematurely speculated about the departures of coaches, players, officials, and various employees from a club that lost its first five matches and appeared out of finals contention, the narrative has suddenly shifted to one of unbridled optimism.  The Demons have won five of their last six matches, positioning themselves just one game (and a considerable amount of percentage) outside the top eight at the halfway mark of the season. They still trail the primary contenders and remain far from assured of a finals berth.

  • REPORT: Sydney

A few weeks ago, I visited a fellow Melbourne Football Club supporter in hospital, and our conversation inevitably shifted from his health diagnosis to the well-being of our football team. Like him, Melbourne had faced challenges in recent months, but an intervention - in his case, surgery, and in the team's case, a change in game style - had brought about much improvement.  The team's professionals had altered its game style from a pedestrian and slow-moving approach, which yielded an average of merely 60 points for five winless games, to a faster and more direct style. This shift led to three consecutive wins and a strong competitive effort in the fourth game, albeit with a tired finish against Hawthorn, a strong premiership contender.  As we discussed our team's recent health improvement, I shared my observations on the changes within the team, including the refreshed style, the introduction of new young talent, such as rising stars Caleb Windsor, Harvey Langford, and Xavier Lindsay, and the rebranding of Kozzy Pickett from a small forward to a midfield machine who can still get among the goals. I also highlighted the dominance of captain Max Gawn in the ruck and the resurgence in form in a big way of midfield superstars Christian Petracca and Clayton Oliver.

  • POSTGAME: Sydney

The Demons controlled the contest from the outset, though inaccurate kicking kept the Swans in the game until half time. But after the break, Melbourne put on the jets and blew Sydney away and the demolition job was complete.
