4, 15 and 23 for WC's 1 and 19? Gives them an extra first rounder for bumping down a few spots at their first and second.

The only time this thread lost the plot was on the 1st day of July when posters actually wanted the Dogs to beat Freo which therefore had them equal on points on us in the pursuit of top 4.

Top 4 > a couple of draft picks higher up the board.

I wonder if posters will be cheering Brisbane and Port to beat Freo if top 2 is still a live chance for us?

We all want Fremantle to beat Geelong in Geelong, for example.

As much as we'd love this deal, I can't see the Eagles going for it at all.

From a points point of view, the deal is fairly equal however I don't think any team is going to down grade from pick 1 unless they're going to get a serious win - especially when pick 1 looks by far the safest option in the draft.

We'd have to sweeten it big time for them to nibble and either not receive back pick 19 or we throw in our first rounder from next year.

The other challenge working against this deal is who the Eagles are targeting.  If it's the home grown Daniel Curtain (which surely they'd be massively in to) then Pick 4 could get him.

However, if the Roos get a first round compo pick for McKay, it lessens that chance again.

I'd happily have a crack at pick one with 4, 15 and 23.  Over time, I don't think there is a much of a difference between picks 10-30 anymore and with better development and more options to recruit (mid year draft and free agents signing) I'm all for getting just the best kid which by far looks to be Harley.

If we had say two top 5 picks or one top five and a pick 8 it may be different.  But with all the NGA/Father Sons/Academy issues that down grade later picks, late first rounders aren't as attractive in my view as they used to be.

Death riding is great fun chook. You should give it a go. It's wonderful watching a team fail knowing the greater the failure the greater the benefit to us. And its extra satisfying if you're petty and mean spirited like I am.

Ignoring the fact it will benefit us, the way i see it, everyone took pleasure at our misfortune, we've definitely got some credits in the bank here

Surely you dont believe Hawthorn will lay down against us in a few weeks time?  I give them a chance against Richmond this weekend. Richmond struggled most of the day against a WAFL team .  Martin got a goal on the final siren ( a free?).

Richmond are playing for a finals spot, what are Hawthorn playing for? certainly not to go from pick 3 to pick 6?

Freo will need to cause 2 upsets to give us a chance of getting to 3rd or even 2nd.
With North asking for compensation picks, we won’t be inside top 5 anyway.

what is the compensation for ?? Bad management Bad luck Bad plyers Bad coaching

Their problems are all self made

All the cool kids are going on about the failure of Gawndy, interestingly i haven't heard much (i must admit i don't listen that closely anymore these days), about the failure of Darcy and Jackson.

Looks like Jacko has the ruck duties for a couple of weeks, i think it will suit him.

Kane Cornes has been onto it for a while

They shouldn’t get, for all points above.. but likely will.

I'm quite happy for them to just let us have a cruisy, bruise free win later in the season.

Early in the season plenty more posters said hawthorn were tanking to get Harley Reid. They’ve won 5 games. They have been having a crack every match (notwithstanding they’ve copped some beatings along the way which are par for the course for young developing teams).

I’m not sure they would rather lose than end up with pick 4. I think Mitchell is telling his team to go out and have a go and let the cards fall where they may. I think this is the right approach from a cultural perspective.

Except it won't be 15, it will be 18!

The days of sides getting compenation picks at the top end of the draft are history. Last year North got additional 2nd & 3rd round picks for 2023 to be taken immediately after their normal picks on the basis they had to trade them for players. Fremantle now have those picks (21 & 40) in return for trading out Griffin Logue & Darcy Tucker. I assume any compenation picks North get this year wil be on a similar basis (2024 draft, in any case not top end of the 2023 draft since they already have Pick 2).

Hawthorn as they've done all season will be playing to win. Doesn't really matter anyway as they're not going to make up 2 games and percentage on Fremantle. Looking at Hawthorn's draw they'll be lucky to win 2 games and I can't see Fremantle losing to West Coast. Bottom 3 locked in.

GWS supporters have even more reason to hope Hawthorn beat Richmond as they have Richmond's 1st round pick.

Super important game for the Hawks to keep their season alive this afternoon.

So apparently this it the potential ladder at the end of the season if the Hawks win every game from here and other results fall there way.  I'll be cheering them all the way to September.  Hell, I'd actually love to face off against them in a grand final with our current squad instead of Brisbane as shown in the graphic.FB_IMG_1689985477010.thumb.jpg.12372b2f60f6f0d111679f343a4fd9ae.jpg

...more importantly there's also a third spot for us riding on it too!!

Yeah, they don't have to do that, just think their still enough of a chance to win a few more games and put themselves above Freo.

Alternatively, if they beat us and we still finish 4th, I don't really care.  It's probably better for our draft hand to finish 4th than third anyway.

I forget - do Hawthorn still have their own 1st round pick?  I'd actually rather they finish higher and get worse picks as well.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
