Jimmy Toumpas was nowhere near as good as Nick Daicos in his U18 year and anybody who thinks so are disrespecting Nick Daicos.

Daicos did more in his first half of AFL footy than Toumpas did his whole career. No dig at Toumpas, some just aren’t made for AFL. Daicos is.

We've offered 3 firsts for 4 & 22

3 likely teens picks for 4 and 22 is ok by me. I’m curious who JT is targeting though.

Fox Footy originally said it was for the Poo when the made our first offer

Wow, that is a hell of a lot of love for Phillipou, I presume.

Courtesy of a newly made AFL rule,  that will allowed Taswegians automatic return home, with a pick 50 compo to the affected team.

Especially made for us after two consecutive flags

Could it be Humphrey who we're set on, not the Poo? And we want to get one pick in front of Gold Coast?

We could potentially offer the same pick package for picks 5 & 25 to Gold Coast, assuming Essendon do select Tsatas as per Twomey's phantom draft, and still have the Poo available, but Essendon are the only ones we seem to have offered it to.

I love the aggressive trading and I love that we seem to have put out there a net of at least 5 or 6 players "Melbourne are really interested in" to keep everyone guessing.

Toumpas is a pimple on the [censored] of Daicos. Daicos is a gun Toumpas was a dud. He was a dud at Port too. Everyone has a go at our culture back then but I think they were just poor picks. Prendergast will go down as one of the poorest recruiters of all time.

Toumpas wasn't a poor pick, it just turned out that the 18 year old Jimmy was a good as it got. No-one has a crystal ball on 18 year olds and their football careers. Here's "Draft Guru" Callum Twomey back in the day:

4. Melbourne - Jimmy Toumpas
Height: 182cm
Weight: 78kg
DOB: 12/01/94
Club: Woodville-West Torrens
Draft range: 2-5
The Demons snare Toumpas at pick four, despite the South Australian being touted a top-three prospect for most of the year. And they'll love him, too, with his class, poise and goalkicking skills excellent for a midfielder. He had an interrupted season with a niggling hip injury, which required surgery at the end of the year, but he'll be fine for the club's pre-season and for next year. Announced himself as a draft pick in this sort of range late last year, when he starred for SANFL side Woodville-West Torrens as they charged to the league premiership. Has excellent leadership qualities that were on show as captain of his state this season, and some already see him growing into an AFL captain.

He got picked on 6 months of performances. He was injured for half the year and the year before that he wasn't even in the state side. Toumpas and Trengove got picked on SANFL performances which was a mistake. Martin and Wines were ready made players in hindsight we should have picked them, but in the end it worked out fine because if we picked up Martin and Wines we wouldn't have Trac or Clarry.

Toumpas didn’t work out, but it was most definitely due to poor culture and poor development, and less so due to poor recruitment. You cannot select that many players at the top end of the draft and have them all fail. Pure statistics say you’d nail at least something. The problem has since been proven to be culture and development. So many of those youngsters started their careers brightly, only to go backwards at a rate of knots.

Wines obviously had a better career than Toumpas, but the part about attentive is incorrect and revisionist. Trengove dominated underage level, captained his side and won a SANFL grand final off his own boot. He was ready made and was superior to Dusty at underage level. He was the equal to or better than Dusty in his first two years. His first few seasons at AFL level were superior to any player currently on our list bar Oliver. He was, put simply, one of the best young players we’ve had this century. Unfortunately injury ruined him, and being stuck in rehab for years on end at a [censored] club like ours at the time wouldn’t have helped. I feel for Trengove as he is one player who could’ve been a star of the competition, but was unlucky with injury and being drafted to a poor club with bad culture and development. He was not a recruiting mistake.

All worked out in the end though as we got others into the club and won a flag!

Trengove's other problem was he wasn't a clearance player he couldn't get his own ball while Martin could.

Incorrect. He was well rounded both inside and outside, and in his second year was averaging four clearances and 9 contested possessions a game - same as Martin. No point continuing line of discussion though as it’s derailing the thread.

Interesting how many stories have come out about us trying to trade up. It’s really a shame we weren’t able to get more out of the Jackson compo. Having a teen pick and two likely teen picks next year isn’t the best stock to try and land a top 5 pick. I’ll be surprised if any clubs bite. If we can trade up, I’d hope it’s with North to get us Sheezel. We need forward half weapons and he looks the best of them.

I wouldn’t do this deal if I was Dodoro. 3 picks in the teens for ND4… but let’s hope incompetence and a desire to death rise us and Freo wins out.

Kind of looking forward to The Great Fremantle Death Ride 2023 tho…

JT talked about addressing multiple needs with our picks, more than just a tall forward, and Ryan would certainly provide cover for the loss of Hunt and replace Hibbo long term as a medium defender. We could do with that combination of speed, run and good height for a flanker. Could be a wing option too.

I don’t think a skinny frame would prevent him being ready to push his case quickly given his role, so he’d be a fun pick up.

We have Riv whose form ( mainly due to racing back into the team too early)  took half a season for good form.

Riv Will star in 2023 but another flanker of size is still a good option but this year I would concentrate on forwards who can kick goals especially finishing ones!

  • NON-MFC: Round 09

Round 9 kicks off out west with the Dockers hosting a Collingwood side resting several stars. Fremantle need to make a statement on their home deck after some disappointing form on the road, while the Magpies will be keen to maintain their Top 2 position. Friday night sees a must-win clash between two sides desperate to stay in touch with the eight. St Kilda have shown glimpses while Carlton are clinging to relevance after a flat start to the season. Saturday’s twilight game at Marvel pits the Bombers against a struggling Sydney outfit. Essendon can’t afford another close match against a lower-ranked side, while the Swans risk sliding down the ladder even further. Up in Darwin, the fourth-placed Suns will look to extend their stay in the top four. The Bulldogs have hit their stride with three big wins on the trot and will be very keen to consolidate on their momentum. The always fiery Showdown looms as pivotal for both clubs. Adelaide are eyeing a spot in the Top 4 with a win, while Port Adelaide’s season could slip away if they drop another game and fall further behind the pack. Sunday begins with a yawn fest between Richmond and West Coast. The Tigers need to bank the points to stay clear of the bottom two, while the Eagles are still chasing their first win of the year. The Giants face one of the league’s toughest road trips as they travel to GMHBA Stadium to face the Cats. With GWS at risk of a third straight loss, Geelong will be eager to consolidate their position inside the eight and start their climb up the ladder. The round wraps up with the top-of-the-table Lions heading to Ninja Stadium to take on the second-last Roos. The Lions should easily take care of the struggling Roos who might be powerless against the best in the comp. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • PREVIEW: Hawthorn

Melbourne and Hawthorn who face off against each other this week have more in common than having once almost merged and about to wear a blue jumper with a red v triangle and an embroidered picture of a bird on the front. They also share the MCG as their main home ground, their supporters are associated with the leafy suburbs of Melbourne and in recent times, James Frawley graced the colours of both teams. Even more recently, both have bounced back from disastrous five game losing streaks to start off a season. Of course, the Hawks turned their bounce into a successful leap from the bottom of the ladder into a finals appearance, making it to the semifinals in 2024 and this year, they’re riding high in third place on the AFL table. The Demons are just three games into their 2025 bounce back, and are yet to climb their way out of the bottom four although they are sitting a game and percentage out of the top eight. However, with the current sportsbet odds of $3.90 to win this week’s encounter, it seems a forlorn hope that their upward progression will continue much longer.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.
