Of course it could but heโ€™s not played a big part this year. We have options. I remain confident.ย

At no point have I said I am not confident

But it would be delusional to suggest that losing Petty for perhaps the rest of the season, isnโ€™t going to really hurt the one part of the ground that has been lacking for us.ย
We also have no idea when or in what state Fritsch will return.ย

Hugely disappointing but on the bright side we have our number 1 key forward locked in for the foreseeable future. He looked good again today before he went down.ย

He's been injured a lot. It's a worry.

I mean Iโ€™m no expert but judging Pettyโ€™s spirits after the game I highly doubt itโ€™s a long term injury.

No point worrying about injuries, they are bound to happen

The problem with losing Petty was that he was forming a good partnership with JVR and the other forwards. As for replacements Smith seems the best option and playing Gawn/Grundy a kick behind the play.

Your right. I feel sorry for the bloke. He's had a shocking run with them. And it wonderful form. Not sure who we replace him with. Grundy will probably get the nod.

Goodwinโ€™s already said itโ€™s not short term. Petty is probably being a good team man, no point sooking and bringing down the mood for everyone elseย

Enter the wizard, Jeffo!!

No chance, he is not senior ready yet by a long way.

Thatโ€™s a blow, anyone who thinks that Brown, McDonald or Smith can replace him need to take their rose coloured glasses off

Clarry back next week and petrecca spends more time forward.ย

Itโ€™s a blow, but to all the wrist-slitters might I gently remind you that we beat Collingwood with not only Oliver out of the team, but Petty as well.ย

You might do well to take a leaf out of his book.

all teams get injuries. Port are shorthanded at the moment and pies just lost Daicos. we'll adapt and win the flag anyways

Injured because of a terrible kick inside 50 that should've hit him on the chest ๐Ÿคฌ

Said it in the post game thread. Post game Lever went up to Petty and appeared to check on him but had a very shocked look on his face from what Petty told him

I think we will see Grundy back. Maybe he will surprise us all.

Iโ€™m taking solace from when Ross Lyon said Max King was done for the year a month ago yet heโ€™s back playing today.

But it does seem Pettyโ€™s going to struggle to get back soon.

Yes please, I'm going to hang onto this as well.

God damn ย it. I was behind the goals today and had a great view of Pettys goal just after half time not long before he went off.ย
It was a fantastic goal for lots of reasons- the ball looked like coming in just before hand and I watched him take his defender and then put body on Melksham defender to free up space for Melksham.ย
When the ball wasnโ€™t delivered ย he faked a lead and then led into space and took a great make before kicking a tough kick. Awesome goal.ย
ย

I turned to my partner and said if he plays like that for rest of season we win the flag. Two mins later I watched him hobble off โ˜น๏ธ

Frittata nearly ready?

What options do you suggest who haven't recently failed? BBB and T Mac are cooked. Grundy has never been a capable forward, and Smith is unproven.

Petty and JVR are the only 2 key forwards who have looked like taking a contested mark, in addition to being mobile. Petty is not replaceable.

Sounds like a Lisfranc which is what he had before coming back

He could not have had a Lisfranc. Thatโ€™s a 12 month injury not a 5 week injury.ย

ย

I prefer Joel Smith behind the ball. Heโ€™s athleticism is better suited to straight lines. He won the ball back a couple of times today and looked great.

Iโ€™d like Grundy in, and a chance to look at him and Max again.

All the worry over the best 22 once Oliver and Frisch back problem solvedย

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.

With just over two weeks until their opening match of the 2026 AFL Premiership season, the Demons are already well on the path to redemption and have the Saints firmly in their sights ahead of their mid-March clash at the MCG. What do you think the team will look like when they run out on to the G?

  • REPORT: Richmond

Mars is not usually a place known for lighting strikes but on Friday evening it happened twice in the vicinity of the stadium in Ballarat that carries the name and is a half completed building site with limited capacity for spectators.
