you forgot Shanghai

Turning preseason in to a full extra game is not adding nothing for players.

Veterans often skip preseason or play a half. Benches are longer. Coaches and fitness staff always demand match conditioning to help with game plans and to PREVENT injuries.

Preseason is important, itโ€™s just not good tv but it isnโ€™t designed to be. Itโ€™s for the fans of individual clubs.

Also the magic round works for the nrl because itโ€™s a Sydney based comp with a couple of teams in Brisbane and elsewhere. Fans rarely ever have to travel. The AFL is a proper national comp and fans either in one or over two seasons have the chance to go to QLD, NSW, SA, WA and even NT or Tas. If theyโ€™re really lucky they can go to Geelong in winter too!ย

This would be selling out the common fan for more money that the league executives use to justify their salaries. Franky itโ€™s disgusting.ย

ย

Just play an extra round and leave it at that. Why would you try and shoehorn 18 teams and their travelling support into one state?ย

So more junk time games for Bottom 4 teams?

Go for it, I just don't want to hear any more about tanking.ย

Season should be shorter, not longer

Agreed. If they had everyone play eachother once that makes 17 rounds. Means you could do the Magic Round easily.

If the magic round was in WA or SA where else would they play games other than Optus and AO respectively?

The 2020 COVID season/festival of footy showed that the AFL had no real interest in playing games at never before used venues for points, in favour of flogging Metricon Stadium with 4 games in 2 days.ย ย

Can definitely see this happening in Sydney where they can use the SCG, Giants Stadium, and Accor Stadium.

SE QLD could combine games at Metricon and GABBA.

ย

Not sure about SA, but WA could use the WACA. They used to play some games there back in the 90's and the facilities must be somewhat reasonable given they still use it for First Class Cricket.

So Geelong and Ballarat aren't accredited?

What a stupid [censored] idea.

Bring in Tassie, 19 teams, 19 rounds (9 home/9 away, 1 bye) alternating home and away each year. Everyone travels to WA, SA, Qld and NSW once per year.

Makes too much sense which is why the AFL will never do it.

Agree, one of the stupider ideas I've heard.

It's like wanting to go to Mars when we have problems here.

On Footy Classified, will be held in NSW. Lots of money been thrown at it. Aimed at families and kids, as it will take place in the school holidays. Season to start a week earlier. I donโ€™t see the problem

It's interesting they bring this up just after signing a new rights deal. Surely they wouldn't be adding extra games for nothing so the TV broadcasters must have already been promised these extra games to help bump the price up.

So it's to be held in Sydney/NSW but no sides have home ground advantage? So will Syd/GWS be playing each other? I'm sure WCE and Freo will be happy to have to make another cross country trip for an additional game where they are not getting an additional home game in return.

The problem is it is just another money grab, how about focusing on the inequities in the fixture instead of creating even more?

I haven't read the detail, but why does there need to be a 23rd game for each club to enable the so-called "Magic Round" to happen? Why couldn't the "Magic Round" be just like any other round, but with all teams in one State? I get that it disrupts the home/away balance, but does that really matter if the clubs who lose one home game one year make it up in the next?

ย

("Magic round" is a terrible name, by the way).

Fix the other issues AFL. Focus on player welfare rather than look for new ways to maximise dollars. Stupid ideaย

Can we play it here..?

Plus another week to shove gambling down our throats.

I would rather it be interstate than Victoria otherwise it would be easy for some Vic teams to get extra games at their 'Home' stadium so the bigger G teams will do well as will some Marvel tenants.

This is absolutely brilliant news.

Another round of footy and a potential holiday in Sydney to watch up to 9 games a footy.

What more do you want?

No preseason games but an extra round " so 23 games" with one round with all teams playing on the same ground"ย

In the NRLโ€™s magic round, all fixtures are played at the one venue. The concept is seen as possible in the AFL after its experiences during the pandemic, playing multiple games at the same venue. The round would include a festival of football in the state where the game is played.

Not necessarily ONE ground.ย
Both say SCG snd Giants ย Stadium could be used for example in Sydney to utilise crowds factor to the max.?

ย

How many would bother travelling for this.

Airfares and accommodation would be at a premium.

Can't be Easter because the Giants ground is utilised for the Easter Show.

Giants have never had a crowd at their home game over 10k.

Just seems to me like an un needed TV event that NSW will pay big money for to the AFL

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

Itโ€™s late February. Two teams widely predicted to finish near the foot of the AFL table in 2026 face off against each other in sweltering 30-degree heat deep in outer suburbia in a match simulation with fresh new faces and uneven team numbers. There are no nearby sheep stations on offer; the result promises nothing more than bragging rights for the winner. Nevertheless, the loser appears hopelessly adrift, whereas the other seems to have found its footing after a couple of years of struggle โ€“ perhaps a hint at bigger things to come?
