I was just wondering who we could add to the Melbourne Demons coaching staff to help us next year in 2023?

I definitely think Simon Goodwin would like to improve our line coaches.

I know a lot will depend if Adem Yze ends up getting the Essendon coaching job or (hopefully) stays with us.

Nevertheless, I think the Melbourne Demons should definitely look to consider pursuing Ben Rutten and Nathan Buckley.

I do not like to compare with other clubs. But if you look at Collingwood they definitely improved their coaching staff for 2022.  They brought in Brendon Bolton and Justin Leppitsch who have definitely helped Craig McCrae in his first year as senior coach at the Magpies.

Obviously we still have Mark "Choco" Williams who has been absolutely fantastic for us. As has Adem Yze in supporting Simon Goodwin.

We also shouldn't forget the efforts made by Troy Chaplin and Greg Stafford. Not to mention the Casey Demons VFL coach Mark Corrigan.

Alan Richardson does a brilliant job as Football Manager and I am sure Sam Radford contributes immensely too.

Nevertheless, I just would like to see improvements made for our forward line connection and if we can bring some more talented coaches in to help improve team performance then that would definitely make a difference.

I also still think we need a proper goal kicking coach at the Melbourne Football Club.

Anyway, please let me know your thoughts on whether or not we should consider pursuing Ben Rutten and Nathan Buckley to join our coaching staff at the Melbourne Football Club?

I think anything we can do to help us improve for season 2023 needs to at least be considered.

Yes.

This is a big one and just as important as list changes etc.

We need fresh eyes, voices and ideas and it will do the entire environment a world of good to land a couple of well respected assistants.

Carlton and Collingwood have got fantastic assistants, we need a couple more.

I think the soft cap will increase and they will be able to get in a new assistant coach as well as someone in strength and conditioning

They announced the new soft cap a few months ago. It wasn't a massive increase IIRC but better than nothing.

Hard to disassociate player group form from line coaches and then there is the overarching gameplan.

Where to start

I think they’ll increase again on the back of the TV rights deal.  The last increase was just to help clubs lift existing staff wages up to account for the reduction they took in Covid

Spot on.

Leppitsch has proven himself to be one of the very best assistant coaches in the modern era.

Someone like a Ben Rutten might fit the bill. A failed senior coach but did some very good things during Richmond's 2017 and 2018 seasons, and was then poached by Essendon.

With Ben "Truck" Rutten rejoining the Richmond coaching staff we will need to look at other options.

Particularly, IF we end up losing Adem Yze if he is successful in getting the Essendon senior coaching role.

As much as I am sure some here would disagree, I would definitely like the Melbourne Football Club to look to approach someone like Nathan Buckley. He would be an excellent midfield coach and could still do at least some of his media commitments. It would definitely be a tantalizing offer to get the chance to coach Clayton Oliver, Christian Petracca, Jack Viney and Max Gawn in the Demons midfield. Anyway, I guess we shall have to wait and see what happens during the off season.

Additionally, I wouldn't mind asking Nick Riewoldt if he wanted to help out as a forwards coach either.

Are there any other suggestions on who the Demons should consider pursuing to enhance our coaching staff?

So, putting it all together we need a soft cap on a hard nut?

Never mind, I'll see myself out...

At face value, I think Buckley would be the worst choice. He is probably too defensively orientated which would reinforce our slow ball movement issues.

A freshen up is critical. 2 new assistants I think. Whether Yze stays or goes.

Hopefully Simon has some time to critically assess his performance (maybe with the help of others). Accept his weaknesses, and look to bring in assistants who can compensate.

Goal Kicking Coaching is Paramount for this Summer. That includes kicking the ball into the 50 metre area and presenting leading options

So more than ‘goal kicking’ coaching…

Youre describing what a forward coach should drive. Stafford needs help or needs to go.

I'm also keen on Mcveigh, and there is a FF who might be coming back to Vic from WC

Keep Yze at all costs and bring in Jordan Lewis, full-time.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
