I saw one of the most shameless acts of diving, something unacceptable in our game.

 

AFL, pay back time, come down hard on McGovern (I’m pretty sure) for the shameless dive when Melky touched him after the mark with two minutes to go. Was a disgraceful attempt at cheating and should not be ignored

    I know this is a Melbourne supporters forum. 

    But last night both Gawn and May were culprits for playing for multiple free kicks in marking contests. 

    Sure there was some blocking and holding from Pittonett on Gawn. But for the biggest guy on the field and our leader, I really wish he'd contest harder in the air and not flop about trying to get frees. Looks terrible. 

    Same with May.

    This is exactly why I have been disappointed in May, he seems to be staging for frees when there is a contest to be won.

    Gawn gets man handled at every marking contest and averages 1.8 free kicks a game. Should be 6+! Given he competes for at least 30 marks a game I’m impressed he doesn’t flop for more. Certain coaches would be in the media every week after the treatment Gawn gets.

    May likes to leap forward when pushed in the back. That should be a free kick. He definitely takes a risk in playing it up and maybe he shouldn’t. But he only takes front position when he’s read the ball better and he gets clean shoved in the back. No better example than when Hawkins tore his hamstring by shoving him. I’m more worried that May gets a little nervous and drops marks when he isn’t sure what’s behind him, but that’s part of his quirks.

    There’s accentuating contact when you’re being infringed, which is pretty common and there’s the McGovern incident aha

    Stevic said “ just get up” and one of the Carlton players said something to him and he paid 50 metres penalty. Easy  to pay when 7 metres out as well as not as dramatic.

    He got pushed clean in the back 3 times last night

    When the "hands in the back" interpretation was relaxed it seems the push in the back rule has also been relaxed a lot

    Looking at the replay it was for a Carlton defender encroaching trying stop Melksham running around. Should have been for the flop though.

    Well if the bloody maggots put some consistency into their rule interpretations, we wouldn't have the best full back not knowing whether to be in front, get pushed in the back or stay behind and contest, ie knock the ball away , and be called for interference. So don't tell anyone you're a better judge of the umpires rules because they don't bloody know either.

    And of course the same blind rule interpretation applies to MAX

    Wow. Talk about bias. 

    Completely disagree on both. 

    I know, (as we all do) that Gawn is constantly checked at marking contests. But when he goes up for marks, he doesn't need to try and milk a free. And on many occasions he could actually go for the mark or try and at least bring it to ground in a positive way as opposed to looking for a free kick mid-air. 

    And May does the same thing when lunging forward. Of course sometimes they're there. But many times he is also trying to milk it. 

    I would rather our two leaders play the ball 100% of the time and let the frees come. The more you look for frees as a player, the less likely an umpire is going to favour you.

    It does, but I’ll argue that they have to accentuate it otherwise they get nothing for contesting hard and getting smacked in the head. 
     

    Every team does it to an extent. It’s the baseless diving.

    Willing to agree to disagree on May. There’s definitely times where the risk/reward of him playing up contact just isn’t worth it. And he doesn’t want a reputation. But he’s hardly Joe Daniher out there.

    Gawn I very much disagree. He’s the most under rewarded player in the comp. The games best pack mark and gets treated like crap.

    Look at the 2:40 mark here. Pitten Mitten has him in a full arm lock. How’s Gawn meant to jump or use more than 1 arm in that situation? He’s well within his rights to highlight that awful contact. Yet alone the blocking he cops. And a whole lot of high contact too. The idea that the guy playing the ball fairly is the bad guy and the opponent wildly breaking the rule shouldn’t be punished is a very strange afl phenomenon
