The poor bugger should stop dropping the knees.  The one against Essendon that caused all the uproar was only a mistake because it lingered high and became overly agressive.  AFL's call was contact was only high because JG lowered himself so intially the call of play on was correct but the "make him earn it" aspect that wasn't called a free was the error.

Spargo and kossie are every bit as bad as Ginnivan.

And selwood has been doing it for years, just not in front of goal so it has been ignored.

I agree they shouldn't get a free if tbe6 demonstrably drop the knees, but personally I'd prefer more emphasis on the tackler not going high.

Tackle them around the waist and its not an issue.

I’m at the Tippler and everyone that’s walked in so far has been draped in black & white. Looks like they will be out in force tonight.

Collingwood to get smashed tonight in the cold and wet.

Beaten badly enough they lose next week also.

Go Demons....[censored] em up!

Couldn't agree more Binman. Joel Selwood invented dropping at the knees and raising an arm it's only the fact that Ginnivan has a bit of personality that he gets picked out, I for one don't mind him, it's good to have a villain.

I reckon Kosi had missed a few frees this year as a result of his ducking/ arm raising. Makes it bloody hard for the umpires I'm glad they don't show slow motion replays of my work day.

I know Selwood has been doing it for years, but half of his comes from the strength to lift his arm, not always dropping the knees. However, Ginnivan and Weightman for the Dogs have taken this to a whole new level, which is why I think we're seeing them get punished more. I don't think Kossie does it terribly much, he's just low to the ground at speed - very similar to why Viney got a free last week, he was low at speed, as compared to dropping the knees. Ginnivan drops at the knees and throws his head back - nearly before contact's been made. It's very hard for a tackler not to go high in those instances, some have even been no more than 60cms off the ground when they make contact but was high before the crack down! So normally lower than the waste, just made high by the actions of the player.

Some great pre-match analysis for killing time (Half way down page):

Now that was not a bad summation, but  they went on how easily they ran over us in the last quarter of QB,  no accountability of our injuries and no May,   and then this

Yet, based off what I saw last week and where we are at in the season, it’s hard not to tip Melbourne.

They look back to their defensive best and if they are able to own the game in their front half, I find it hard to see Collingwood winning. I think Melbourne win comfortably.

And I think so as well,

And tonight Toby aged 8 runs out with Tom Sparrow,  Hope Sparrow has a blinder.  Young Toby, lucky boy...

Welcome back to the whether* channel

my take is the rain will stop in around 45 mins. Most of the game will be rain free or drizzle

Spargo and Kozzy both do it but I’d argue it’s as bad.  And the AFL should have stopped Selwood doing it 15 years ago but they fluffed it.  However, JG took it to a new level by making winning the high free his first and only goal when confronting a tackler.  Once the dust settles the game will be much better off.  Whether Jack has enough other strengths in his game to remain affective at the highest level remains to be seen.

Edit for clarification - I’ve never liked Spargo and Kozzy doing it, or any other Melbourne player.  I loved Brad Green but disliked when he started throwing his head back late in his career.  Playing for a free is totally against what I view as the mythical “spirit of the game”.

I’ve been in covid iso this week and been replacing rotten timber on exposed end of my deck. Having run string lines for every 5th board I would like to line up before a firing squad whomever laid it originally as it’s as crooked as a politician. It has been a nightmare to straighten and space properly (ie 5-8mm not 0.5mm). I don’t want to even start on posts set into the ground (sloping block) and lack of termite barrier . Dear god. It had been a big week so thank you dees for wrapping it up with a win (please)

Have to admit, I nearly wimped out as it was [censored] down rain when I left The Manor. However, I displayed true G and D and am currently enjoy a well earned libation before heading to the G.

I'm confident of a comfortable victory

Keep raining.

I don't care how we best the pies as long as we beat them.

Fair call. 'Great' analysis might've been a bit overboard - Just thought id post a little bit of light reading anyway.

My expectation bar is so low for the media that I don't expect neutrals to re-watch an old matchup or remember, as we fans do, players getting subbed off and playing injured, but it's a standard we should expect.

I’ve read a number of reviews and they all have said, Collingwood have all these strengths across the ground, blah blah blah, then every person whose written the article goes onto tip the Demons!

It seems people trying to find reasons to tip the Pies, but don’t believe it!

We don’t have a great record against the Pies but last years QB match Demons were as flat as pancakes, and this year Max injured, Turner went off and Petty was injured, we stopped to a walk and yet with 5 mins to go we’re only 8 points down, they kicked 3 in last 5 mins to make it 26 points.

Looking forward to something good from the Demons and a solid win!

  • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.

  • CASEY: Williamstown

The Casey Demons issued a strong statement to the remaining teams in the VFL race with a thumping 76-point victory in their Elimination Final against Williamstown. This was the sixth consecutive win for the Demons, who stormed into the finals from a long way back with scalps including two of the teams still in flag contention. Senior Coach Taylor Whitford would have been delighted with the manner in which his team opened its finals campaign with high impact after securing the lead early in the game when Jai Culley delivered a precise pass to a lead from Noah Yze, who scored his first of seven straight goals for the day. Yze kicked his second on the quarter time siren, by which time the Demons were already in control. The youngster repeated the dose in the second term as the Seagulls were reduced to mere

Narrm time isn’t a standard concept—it’s the time within the traditional lands of Narrm, the Woiwurrung name for Melbourne. Indigenous Round runs for rounds 3 and 4 and is a powerful platform to recognise the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in sport, community, and Australian culture. This week, suburban footy returns to the infamous Victoria Park as the mighty Narrm take on the Collingwood Magpies at 1:05pm Narrm time, Sunday 31 August. Come along if you can.

The Dees demolished the Saints in a comprehensive 74-pointshellacking.  We filled our boots with percentage — now a whopping 520.7% — and sit atop the AFLW ladder. Melbourne’s game plan is on fire, and the competition is officially on notice.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.
