AFLW: 2022 Fixture (Season 7)

Recommended Posts

I can't believe this competition is still a 10 week season. Don't pretend that you are providing a serious, professional competition when teams are only playing 50% of the other teams each year.

Why do we only have four home games, and just one in the first six weeks? How is that fair? Late Sunday afternoon games at Casey Fields are going to reduce crowds significantly as well.

It would be really nice to go to Adelaide in round 1 and get the win, otherwise the Crows become a very big hurdle for us to jump as the losing streak continues.

Play in the grand final and get toughest draw. Even worse than Adelaide but not by much. The only new team we face is Essendon who have recruited gun players from other clubs and who, I am sure , the AFL will want to see play finals.

Wonder what the umpiring will be like at Norwood oval ?

Tough draw, as expected. BIG game first up.

Not sure why we're playing a home game in Port Melbourne. To give Dees fans on the other side a chance to attend? Nope, Friday arvo, so no one will attend (first week of men's finals explains the time slot but not the venue).

Also continue to find it an amusing quirk that we're still not fixtured to play Geelong. That'll be no match-up for four years and five seasons by the end of 2022.

The teams we play and their 2022(a) ladder position: Adelaide (1st), North (4th), St Kilda (13th), Brisbane (3rd), Carlton (8th), Freo (5th), Western Bulldogs (7th), Gold Coast (10th), Essendon (n/a), West Coast (14th)

The teams we don't play and their 2022(a) ladder position: Collingwood (6th), Geelong (12th), GWS (9th), Hawthorn (n/a), Port (n/a), Richmond (11th), Sydney (n/a)

To put a positive spin on it, we'll have a contest every week and if we get there, we'll have earned it.

Round2 is a home game . Check your facts .

Port Melb seems to be where Ess are playing their Home games.

Our North game is either it is an error or Casey isn't available that day.  If that was the case they could schedule the game on another day...

We play Crows and Dockers on their Home turf.  Again.

Could have done with a home game against the crows. Why are we playing them away again? Surely fairness says we play them at Casey this year. Rotating home and away is the most basic league format principal

Normally our run home is brutal but this year we have suns, Essendon and the eagles. I suppose we should be thankful for that much.

Good point re: Casey availability. Must be something like that, coupled with the men's season reducing other time slots available. I knows there's talk of moving the Round 1 game between Hawks and Bombers from Port Melbourne due to the small capacity. Obviously that won't be an issue for our game given the time slot.

In general, though, I think they've handled the crossover between the seasons fairly well, with little danger of clashes for likely finals contenders.

Just imagine a proper 17-game H&A season, with home games alternating each year. Super fair. But then what will we complain about? Haha.

I wonder what has happened to Freo this year.  From PF to being beaten by WCE and thrashed by Geelong where they scored just one point for the whole game.

Mentioning Geelong, I noticed they are on top then saw that we don't play them this year.  Question:  have we played them at all since they entered the competition in 2019?  Even allowing for the 'conference' system, covid interruption and the fixture not pitting newbie teams vs established teams, it would be really weird if we haven't played them.

I wonder if there are other teams (exlc this year's new teams) that we haven't played?

We haven't played Geelong yet. No idea why not because we've played West Coast once, and the rest of the newbies regularly

In a way we have a de facto conference system where newbie teams play each other rather frequently than the better teams hardly at all.

As a result, I wouldn't be surprised to see a newbie team or two in the finals.  Just hope it isn't at the expense of a top team as happened in the 'conference' system year.  Or worse keep a top team out of the top 4.

Hopefully, the cream rises to the top.

It'll be between us, The Crows and the Lions again this year

Huge game v the Lions in Rd 4 at Casey. I wonder if it could be switched to the G as a prelim curtain raiser if we win through? That would be great

Freo have fallen off a cliff. They have lost some players to expansion clubs but not enough to explain the drop off

Freo lost two of their most experienced leaders on the eve of the season to injury (the Antonios). Losing Houghton to Port has greatly diminished their scoring power. Tbh, despite their result last season, I think they might have been about to plateau anyway.

Check out their games experience for R2 compared to the other 'original 8'. Even Carlton who've leaked players for years had more experience.

We are nearly half way through the season and I'm watching it go down the gurgler because we can't kick straight and don't play four quarters.  We make a great start with accurate kicking and then it stops.

In our 3 winning games we have kicked 15.26 squandering precious opportunities to build % while other teams capitalise.

I fear we are going to miss a double chance or Home Finals.

Will hopefully improve with the addition of Duffy this week.  A genuine forward.

Harris has moved up the ground.  Daisy is not a forward, and we have depended on Kate Hore and the mids to put score on the board.

Critically % will be a big factor with this biased fixture.  If your team is fixtured to play the new sides in the competition you will get big % boost.  With only 10 games, there will be a log-jam at the top and second rate sides will get a finals gig, same as when they ran the conference system before.

Thought we hung in last week bravely without Tayla especially but vs Saints   and North after 1/4 time we bungled our shots at goal as you said.

Let's  see if we straighten up and our forward line can become a real strength in the next 2.3 weeks.

I still believe the loss of Krystal Petrevski hurts us both in 2022 and this season 7.
We need a small buzzing busy forward with goal sense to complete our forward line.

I know this makes us look like an older team, but after Daisy and Paxman (34 and nearly 34) the next oldest that week was Ivey (29).

This week Goldy (32) was third oldest, and we had Gay (26), Hore (27), Pearce (29) as the only other players older than 25.

Given Paxy and Daisy have been playing an increasingly secondary role (as Purcell, Hanks, and West step up), I feel like we are pretty well balanced to be a strong team over the next 5 years.

I just hope we can win one for Daisy and Paxman!

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to
