Can we repeat this in the second half? Lions would still be confident seeing our last 3 games. Got to keep the midfield pressure on. I am backing Viney to lead the way.

Still a half to go. Lions are a very good team, not going to roll over. But at least we've had a glimpse.

Brisbane are likely working with similar loads in training. Should be interesting

Great quarter. No let up, and we win. For any of you watching on Kayo at home, have you ever heard a stream of more ridiculous hyperbole than that unleashed by David King? He is a frank embarrassment to football commentary. Almost everything that leaves his mouth is plainly ridiculous. Rant over! Can’t wait for Tracc and Clarrie to really get rolling!

BBB been quite good Viney sensational

I think brown has extended his run up if that's even possible

Big difference that quarter to the past 3 games, the pressure was back

Just need to maintain this intensity and we’ll sail home.

Keep the pressure up and we’ll get the points. No fade outs tonight please!

Bit like the  the final last year, we cut them open in the 2nd after a close 1st quarter. They came back in the 3rd and we ran away in the last.

Close to best game I've seen Viney play. Incredible.

Lever superb.

Viney has carried this team on his back for a few weeks now I reckon.

Must be such a good feeling to see the rest of the team lift and follow his leadership.

Please don't stop at one Dees like you've done many times this year. Another quarter like that and we will have smashed them.

Is that the best quarter we’ve played all year? That’s the first time in ages I feel like I’m watching the team from late last year. Hope we can keep it going in the second half and kick-start the second half of the season. Our best is still the best in it.

Only quarter that comes ose is the 3rd vs GWS otherwise that was easily our best quarter for the season.

Keep it up Demons, don't let up, put your foot on their throat

What did he say?

The Lions are at our mercy. Need to take this opportunity to get more players back into form. Would love to see lingers rip it up in the second half.

Best game of Lever for the season. Hopefully he can carry it all the way until the finals.

Too much. One example - “that quarter was the biggest mauling I’ve seen for years”.

Great quarter, worked our butts off and the tide turned. We started creating chances. Jackson lowering the eyes to hit up Brown was excellent and gave us the reward for effort we deserved. Much more zip and movement up forward, got the ball pinging around the way we like it.

May is having a howler but it still helps immensely having him out there. Lever looking as sharp as ever.

Luke Jackson is standing up, sure he's getting beat in some ruck contests but it's not his job to win them all right now. I think his midfield work has been great. Big Sam is cracking in too, would love to see a big mark from him down the line.

How about Harmes the goalsneak! Sometimes you gotta find them elsewhere.

The work is not done, not even close. And if loading is a thing then ots gonna be a harder second half to watch. Grind this one out Demons.

This is just regulation for Harmes. Most underrated player in the game, and lowered a prime Dangers colors as a tagger. Good to see him on Neale. Lyon getting bruised helps us. Bailey not playing now helps more. Zorko not playing screws their structure.

Lever is BOG. Really impressive. Viney stepping up, best quarter from him I’ve seen. Jackson is our type of ruck. He plays our type of game style - grinds. He’s been great. Sticks tackles and does a lot off the ball. Harmes obviously huge. Ben Brown looking best I’ve seen him this year really great touch. Sparrow is a problem for Brissy. They had no answer for him early. They blanketed Oliver, and Petracca was trying, but Sparrow was being effective.

Weideman has shown a bit in that first half so good on him. Looking at the stats doesn’t show much but he’s had a bit of presence at times.

Bit hard when we kick it to Andrews

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.

The Demons simply did not take their opportunities when they presented themselves and ultimately when down by 25 points effectively ending their finals chances. Goal kicking practice during the Bye?
