I don’t think knowledge necessarily directly corresponds with respect for tradition. And even if it does I’m not sure the CEO has to wear all of that burden, that’s really the commissions job. Any and every CEO will to some extent try to sell fans and clubs up the river to increase revenues. That’s human nature.

The right person for the job doesn’t go too far with that, makes smart deals and is innovative. Gill’s not always popular but he’s done far better than a lot of people think in those aspects. 

 

I don't know a lot about Auld's direct influence up at GC to know how well or poorly he did. From the outside looking in I think even Peter Jackson would have had a tough time there in those days but I do take your point. I thought his role in the fixturing in 2020 was a decent feathers in the cap.

Where Peggy O'Neil is concerned that is true but to me the club president role is a place where you can do this and get the right people in. I'm actually a bit surprised how many club presidents have been linked to this job considering governance and management are two different things. You can definitively make the transition of course and a lot of these people have management backgrounds but if you're hiring for AFL CEO you'd want a bit more than an overpriced delegator in my opinion.

Not ruling it out though, the bold moves can often spark progress.

A CEO needs to demonstrate executive excellence above reproach. I’m not sure if Frydenberg would meet this standard.

I would have thought the obvious candidate is starring the League in the face. Either Max or Daisy.

This feels like classic AFL controversy generation. 

Leak an idea into the media that they suspect will be particularly controversial to either a) test it with the public first and the deny all knowledge if the idea stinks or b) create a big carry on so that they can gently slip in their preferred outcome in the background seemingly under the radar.

It's always interesting to consider the counter-factual. Remember that around the time Graeme Samuel joined the then VFL, the Commissioner for Corporate Affairs in Victoria had written to the VFL advising of his intention to wind up seven clubs who were all technically bankrupt making it illegal for them to trade. (There's an old thread on this somewhere.) If Samuel hadn't joined the VFL, perhaps there would be no Fitzroy and six other clubs - including ours - before the end of the 1980s.

A very capable man on many fronts, but I can't see him as a sport CEO of any kind. 

Unfortunately, I see 1 of 2 frightening scenarios playing out:

They promote/elevate one of their own who is cut from the Demetriou/McLachlan mould, and the fan-ignoring, gambling-addicted, game destroying, money-grabbing, knobs continue to focus on "what are they doing in the USA so let's copy that".

OR

A woke dilettante who wants a cause-based guernsey for each separate round, makes our great game more like basketball and soccer so people don't get hurt, and panders to every lobby group or study out of Sweden that says salad makes your heart stronger. 

 

I detest his former colleagues, but Josh was probably the least of offensive of that bunch. 
 

Either way, please keep career politicians away from the game I love. 

Ha Ha ha . So Josh approached the AFL and asked for the job not the other way around. Word is he planted the story he's in the running for the AFL job with a friendly journo. Not getting any bites in the corporate world and decided he needed to create a little "buzz" himself. AFR
