Assuming no one has to miss for any reason its just Brown in for Weid in my view. Neither TMac or Weid made the second spot their own. Whilst Tmac has not impacted significantly for some, one good game playing the deeper role from Weid does not give him the spot. We know what we get with the Brown and Tmac convo. I would prefer to have the more mature bigger body of Tmac against the Giants defenders. Also he is more proven in the higher tall forward role and I much prefer Brown as the deeper forward (the role Weid played against the Bombers).

I thought they may bring in Smith over Tomo or Hunt but from some presser snippets I sense Smith is less in tune with the back 7 dynamic than Tomo or Petty who I sense they may want to give another week at Casey to before consideration.

Agree, must be very tough for Casey Demons and the AFLW team to be playing down at Casey

BB could've stood in the goal square picking his nose for four quarters last night for all I care but I'd still be bringing him into the side next week for SW.

How about bringing in BBB and Harrison Petty with both Sam and Tom to be dropped.
Neither seem to be taking on or growing into the spot, and with Max, Jackson, Brown and Petty able to roll forward, do we need to persist with either of them when they’re out of form?

That was LJ,but there arnt many of those around .( smile)

LJ just "swayed" through the packs and flew to catch the sunlight in his hands like a Mick Taylor solo

Assuming BBB is in then I'm for Tom although it still could go either way I guess. But the thing is that I see Weid and MFC like I see  Ronnie Wood and The Rolling Stones!...  Weid and Ron are good  and both have certain skills to bring.

For mine Ron was a fill in session muso when Keef was unreliable and Mick Taylor didn't fit. Now he's a "Stone" albeit creepy weird and a  shizen artist.

Weid is a fill in forward whose quirks are he that doesn't contest on the ground and flies beautifully on a lead then drops the mark! He can pinch hit in the ruck as well.

Any  band Ronnie plays with is lesser for it but we forget Taylor and Brian Jones and accept them as picked.

If Weid becomes a "Dee" we will forget how that forward line could look if LJ or even Watts had found their place in the 22.

It's not as if Weid hasn't been in the rehearsal room for long enough now to show his chops  , but at least he's not creepy weird.

Tom stays for the time being anyway, though he looks a little personally uncomfortable at times.

I loved Ronnie Wood with The Faces. What a band!

Mick Taylor was awesome with the Stones. Ronnie Wood was/is a downgrade.

I think SW will get the gig this week, and Tmac will be dropped, or moved to the backline. If the latter AT will presumably make way for BBB.

i think one of the things that gets forgotten about weed is that he'd barely played and trained in the lead up to his draft, but the glimpses he'd shown at aps school football in particular were genuinely full of potential

i would estimate he's probably not played 100 fully competitive games by dint of injury, including afl, vfl, and u/18s or school football, whereas some of his contemporaries were probably drafted with around that many underage, school, and / or vfl football games worth of experience

Just a clarification, Sam went to Whitefriars College with Tracc which isn’t in the APS system, they are in ACC system which is a lower standard than APS.

Your second paragraph is pretty accurate though and he played for Vermont Eagles up to around age 16 I think in the Eastern Football League before a handful of games at various levels up to VFL. Not the background that many others have had the luxury of.

I realise the selection committee doesn't base it's decisions around stats but if you were to look at these four from a purely stats form perspective...

So far Joel is running at approx 13.5% higher weighted score (output) than Petty's season average score in 2021,  21% above Tomo's average output (so far this season) and 74% higher than Hunt's average score (this season).  Will be pretty stiff to miss out but wouldn't be surprised if he does either.

Interesting stats for Joel Smith DD I guess it depends on GWS forward line but reinforces our opinion that Joel is playing pretty good footy.

Gawn made an interesting comment about May being happy to have Lever back as he spent half his energy trying to get Smith to adjust his positioning. Sounds as though Smith perhaps struggles with gameplan or just lacks footy iq. His stats might be decent, but if he struggles to play his role as Gawn suggested then he’s out. I suspect Smith or Hunt would be the ones to be dropped, so unlucky timing to Smith to lose his spot for Covid protocols.

Would be pretty hard for anyone to cover Lever's role effectively as Lever himself (in best or close to best form) i would think LT.  He plays it so well and such a specialist role at that.  Petty might be a better foil though (covering the Lever role if / when he is out i mean) which might explain the comments from Maxy re May having some issues with Joel.  That might be purely experience / time spent (in game) playing in the system and with the other fellas down back vs Joel (less time spent = less experience = more likely to muck up).  If he (Joel) does miss due to Covid outing then yes it would be very unlucky timing for him eh.

In terms of similar style / role i would think Joel might be (post Lever's return) more directly competing with Petty & Tomo?  Hunt being more a high pressure (ground level) quick rebound type defender and more likely competing with Rivers & Hibb (high pressure sense in the case of Hibb).

One stat that i have a sneaking suspicion some within the FD take a bit of notice of is... interceptions.  The top five here (on averages) so far...

1.  Steven May  7.00

1.  Jake Bowey  7.00

3.  Gus Brayshaw  6.75

4.  Joel Smith  5.67  and

5  Ed Langdon / James Jordon both on 5.50

If he's competing with Petty for a spot he's not going to be playing a lot of senior footy.

If you're talking stats Petty is 197cm v Smith's 191cm...Petty is a great foil for Lever and May taking out oppo talls and plays his role well.

Petty’s height and mobility will be key against King when we play the Saints if May can’t bustle him

I heard the comment too and get why May would be relieved.

In all honesty Smith lack of footy awareness and smarts shows out pretty evidently on game days.

Supporters overrate Joel as a defender by his shiny, sparkly athleticism.

I don't think we'll see him again unless injury strikes.

I'm not sure supporters appreciate Tomlinson's positioning and body work off the ball which allows both May and Lever to intercept a mark or completely kill the ball. It's almost the most important component of our backline. And Gawn basically stated as much with his weird post match comment regarding Smith.

Would love Smith to be in the side for his positive attributes. But his lack of defensive smarts, positioning as well as his regular brain fades that turn into opposition goals make it hard to trust him. And trust is paramount in a defensive unit.

MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
