VFL: Corrigan keen for season of growth

“But Casey is already looking forward to giving opportunities to its younger brigade, including Roan Steele (Frankston YCW), Tyler Edwards (Rowville) and Matthew Buntine (GWS).”

‘Then we’ve got players like Roan Steele and Tyler Edwards who we are more than happy to see become their replacements.’

.…

Alongside the ever-reliable group of mature players including James Munro, Mitch White, Jack Bell and Aidan Quigley, Corrigan has plenty to be opportunistic about when he throws in the likes of AFL recruits Blake Howes and Taj Woewodin.

‘Both Blake and Taj have been super in their pre-season and haven’t missed a beat,’ Corrigan said.

‘In each practice match they’ve showed continual development and progression in their roles - we’re not putting a ceiling on where they can get to by the end of the year.’

I think Edwards was 51 and Steele 54.

Taj sounds like a natural footballer that isn't highly touted in the draft due to lack of a 'weapon' that ends up turning into a gun

The talk out of the pre season seems to all lean on Taj and Howes to lesser extent as the first year player most likely to debut.

Mark Williams talked him up at a VFL function the other night and Riley Beveridge had him as a likely player that could debut early this season.

Taj and Howe really do excite me from watching absolutely no live games of either.

With Taj, it is easy to forget his father’s story - which was, recruiters did not think he had enough talent and he was getting overlooked, but by sheer determination to make the most out of what he had, he forced his way into our list and ultimately to a Brownlow medal. Equally, with Taj, he was not seem to be particularly talented but he is obviously making the most of everything he has.

16 AFL listed.
Casey’s defence obviously looks weak with us missing 4 premiership defenders in the AFL !!! Loss of Hutchins also reduces their key defender stocks.  Strange they didn’t look to bring in another key defender from the suburban leagues over the summer.

Buntine not playing hurts. Is Milford our CHB? Doubt McVee will be CHB. He didn't play last week so I know nothing about him.

I thought Brock Smith (delisted by Lions) was a good option for Casey this year and one still to watch. Not sure where he is playing in 2022. Was a strong rebound defender in 2019 drafted at pick 33 by Lions (captained Gippsland Power in 2019) . Showed some good parts in NEAFL comp but obviously not enough to remain on the list.

Looking forward to this game at 1.05 today. Streaming on AFL website & app. Sandringham were mid-table last year but don't know how they recruited over Summer.

The good thing for those who can't watch it live is it looks like the full replay will (eventually) make it on to the AFL website. l checked Friday's VFL games yesterday and only the highlights were up but as of this morning the full replays were there.

Very interested to see how Weed, Brown, JVR, Bedford and Chandler go

It's a pity it is on Sunday as any player in contention won't be able to play 4 quarters and then play friday night you wouldn't think?

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int

    POSTGAME: Rd 24 vs Collingwood

The Dees played insipid, error riddled & uninspiring footy all night and in a lightning delayed match they eventually succumbed to Collingwood by 46 points at the MCG in the final game of the year. Thank God this season is finally over. Bring on 2025.
