Free agency.

The clubs offering deals to Gus don’t have to trade anything for him. They would be getting a top 25 pick for free.

So instead of offering a player the 450k  for 3-4 years that they’re worth they’ll offer him 600k for 4 or even 5. 150k per year is nothing when they don’t have enough good players to fill the cap anyway.

We can’t afford 600 x 5. So to make up the difference we offer 500 x 6. Post tax the extra year of work pretty much pays for itself.

There’s actually a fairly limited pool of players who are eligible and can back themselves in with short deals and make it 25/26 whilst having good value. Every player who then gets to free agency (or even pre agency 16 or so months out) then gets a big money deal, whether they’re Clayton Oliver or Adam Tomlinson. It’s either years, dollars or both.

You know so much about nothing

This has NOTHING to do with Free Agency at all.
It’s about having a core group of leaders who set the Standards whilst the Club is in a Serious Premiership phase

Length of contract has absolutely exploded since free agency. That’s undeniable. Go yell in the mirror

That's cute after your recent posts 😂😁

Haven’t said anything negative about another poster til now. Have simply stated my beliefs about a player. Happy to debate people in good faith. There’s plenty of people who agree with me, some are probably afraid to go against the demonland group think and the overly excited fans.

Jacko is gonna feel a bit left out...

Come on son, tell the bloody agent you're gonna get rid of him if he can't organise a deal with the team where your tooth is..

Hope that's us.

Yep, fair. I did edit my post before you posted for that reason, but you must’ve already been in the middle of replying. Fair bump, play on!

I will leave that to yourself

You would have put half the side up for trade, because they don’t reach your lofty keyboard standards

Anyone doubting the value of Gus should just go and re watch the grand final. There are players who are very good H&A players and there are players who step up in the finals and GF - the game that matters most!

Absolutely delighted he has signed for six, he wants to be part of a dynasty team! Is there some risk in our long term deals - yes, but we are taking a balanced approach to risk and reward.

Long-term deals for Max, Viney, Salem, Clarrie, Trac & Gus likely means they are all taking unders, multiply 6 players *$ 150-200k leaves an extra $900k - $1.2M to keep other players.

That core group of players will keep us in the mix for a flag for the next 5 years.

You are just plain wrong…

Angus Brayshaw has turned his back on free agency, committing to the red and blue for another six years.

The 26-year-old will be a Demon for life, with the new deal securing Brayshaw’s services until at least the end of 2028.

Melbourne List Manager Tim Lamb said the club was thrilled to secure Brayshaw on a long-term deal.

“Angus is a leader of our club and to have him commit long term is a brilliant result. His talent is obvious to all and his willingness to put the team first and play whatever role we need him to is a testament to his character, ” Lamb told Melbourne Media.

“This signing is another great endorsement for the culture we have created and we know Angus will continue to drive standards within the group.

“The versatility he has displayed across his career makes him an enormous asset to our club. The great thing is Angus still has enormous growth in his game and we are excited about what he will produce in the future.

“This deal means another key pillar of our playing group will play out his career with us which is an important part of our strategy going forward. The example that our leaders have set in committing to stay together to try to achieve something special should give our members and supporters great confidence in the direction we are taking."

The 137-game premiership player, and co-host of the popular Gus & Gawny Podcast, has averaged 25 disposals and eight marks this season, embracing a new role off half-back.

Melbourne’s Round 3 clash with Essendon saw him gather a season-high 34 disposals and 20 marks.

Brayshaw joined the Demons in the 2014 National Draft, taken with pick No.3.

This backs up what @goodwindees was saying on here the other day wanting a lofty contract with more midfield time.

What it also shows that the rumours on here of him signing a new contract with an announcement this week is completely out of wack.

Ouch. Didn't age well. Less than 24 hrs.....

Fabulous news and never in doubt!!

Having a tremendous season too ... probably running 3rd in our B & F award in a team sitting 2nd on the ladder.  That's All- Australian quality and if is form keeps up, he might get AA recognition

Are all our good players signed up for the foreseeable future?  (Apart from LJ)

Probably more like 4 until he gets shipped off to the Tassie team

Would that be a disaster if he's a triple Premiership player by then?

I thought Ben Brown would deliver exactly what he has this year. Cooked knee, battling to play. Credit to Burgo, Ben and the team for getting a very good half a season out of him. Clearly now it’s a gamble that was worth taking. Still not entirely sure why he got 4 years but the draft compensation (swap of Preuss) became far less than initial fears.

I thought Tom was battling too many leg injuries and would struggle to recapture form. He doesn’t play through injuries well. They got him going close to his best last year, we’ll see if he’s got more in him.

I didn’t think ANB would ever find the level of composure and attack on the ball to be useful under pressure. Great defensively but was a liability the other way until he found belief last year.

I loved Spargo in ‘18, he did test the patience in 19-20. I’m sure there’s posts after bad games where I was down on many of our players but I’d say the rest of the premiership 22 I had a good opinion of.

The drop back wing role was an effective use of Gus. So has been using him as an intercept defender, particularly when Lever was missing. But the clubs been drafting wingers the last two years, and gun halfbacks need speed and/or skills.

I don’t agree with 6 years for a guy who’s plugged gaps but isn’t an ideal fit in any one position.

I can see where you are coming from and understand your reluctance on the length of the contract, but we don't know what the conditions of these contracts and whether they are might be front, middle or back loaded or a mixture of them, but sometimes you need players that can fill these roles and they are just as important as a gun player and going by the past they are hard to find because some players will only accept what they think they are not what's good for the team, and thats where Gus fits in, gone from midfield, HB flank and wing so as much as I might think it might be a tad long I think it's for the best for the team going forward.

One of the best things about this signing is that an intelligent guy like Gus has done full due diligence and chosen MFC over more money and more midfield opportunity elsewhere. That's a huge endorsement of our club.

No need to read the whole thread as the latest table is always duplicated at the top of page 1 of the thread to save people wading through.

The quick answer to your question is look for the image.png.2e3b95e34910198ddfd43e9d7c3157f2.png against the names.

Yes, it’s such an affirmation of where the club is at and where the group is going.

Keeping people motivated to be better can’t just be about ‘the end of their contract’ and we have obviously said to ourselves - these are players to build around - be it performance, structure, culture or all of the above.

Such a great spot to be - very few question marks or worries heading into the rest of the decade when it comes to competing with the best.

    BLOODY BLUES by Meggs

The conclusion to Narrm’s home and away season was the inevitable let down by the bloody Blues  who meekly capitulated to the Bombers.   The 2024 season fixture handicapped the Demons chances from the get-go with Port Adelaide, Brisbane and Essendon advantaged with enough gimme games to ensure a tough road to the finals, especially after a slew of early season injuries to star players cost wins and percentage.     As we strode confidently through the gates of Prin
