I'd say Gus is also using this phase to build a bigger media profile himself. Being a premiership player would open a number of doors, but players who want a media career post-footy need to build it while they play. Gawn and Trac already have a large presence, but I feel Gus is also looking at getting a foot in that door - with both his podcast and these interviews it show's him off. He'll be guided from his father and others, who I'm sure will be saying don't waste these negotiations to uplift his profile. 

Doesn't mean he's off at all, or that the club won't know what he's doing. But I'd say Gus is working this exactly like he and his team had planned.

Gun on ballers get 700k+. They are the driving force behind teams winning. Only talls get paid the same and that’s often due to scarcity and potential as much as talent.

Zac Williams left GWS to get a midfielders pay packet at Carlton. Turns out he hasn’t been fit enough to play on ball but that’s really a different story.

Half back flankers or wingers only approach the same pay packet if they are two way weapons. Salem at his best qualifies for that. Someone like Saad fits the bill. Or Brad Hill (in theory). Gus does not.

If Gus wants a bigger pay packet and bigger role that’s entirely reasonable. I wouldn’t begrudge him one bit. That’s entirely in line with my thoughts that he’s our 5th most important defender and can only be paid as such.

Is there any evidence anyone has? All our extensions have been long deals, often taking guys well in to their 30’s. It’s not really a sacrifice when you’re giving up some short term money for incredible long term security that may well see a player overpaid at the back end of their deal. 

I think it’s a myth league wide too. Geelong lost Ablett, Richmond Rance and Hawthorn Buddy, that’s the 3 most expensive guys gone from those sides. Those sides also moved out players at times too, the Tigers moved on Ellis and multiple small forwards. Hawks moved on Mark Williams who was incredibly popular with fans.
 

I’m willing to believe players will take 10-20% less, possibly a bit more if there’s bonus years, I doubt anyones leaving bulk cash on the table out of good will.

Yes but if he played inside mid, he may become an elite midfielder because that's his best position.  In other words, playing as a defender or winger is not a true reflection of his worth because he's not as well suited to those positions.

The further this has gone on, the less I'm worried about him leaving. 

From a playing perspective, losing him never really bothered me. But from a leadership and culture perspective, I wanted him to stay. 

But hearing him speak yesterday, I don't think he's fabric at all. Fabric players never speak like that.

If him leaving meant we got another late first rounder, it would only help in our quest for sustained success. 

We need another crop of elite talent coming through so that once our current core hit the 27-28 age bracket, we'll have some young players also hitting some consistency. 

Really, it's the only way a team can stay up the top. A little pain for one year and a lot of gain for future years. 

We've got to keep looking forward.

He is not playing in our midfield. So if that's what he wants, its not going to happen  

I don't begrudge him trying to to maximize his contract, or explore his options.

But i would lose a bit of respect for him, as the great teams always have gun players who have to take a pay haircut to help the cause, Hodge being an example if IIRC. And are celebrated for that sacrifice post career. 

I took great satisfaction in flogging Sydney by 10 goals in the first semi that year for that very reason. Although he did buy me a beer for my 21st at LAX airport on the way home from the games we played in Vancouver a few weeks later.

Its all very well for Brayshaw to claim the delay is about due diligence, but now would be a good time to provide a much needed lift in spirits for the supporters. A true Demon leader would recognise that fact and would have timed any announcement to propel his team through the hangover / doldrums that have descended. Gus wants more money from an ego perspective, he thinks he's every bit as good as Trac and Oliver and he's waiting til Jackson is definitively leaving for the club to give him more dollars. He doesn't want to leave Melbourne.

• Hamish thinks if we win another flag Gus will consider moving on.
• If we don't win the flag his 'chip on the block' ie his ego, will want to make stay for another go.

So we aren't likely to get an answer until our season is over.  It also indicates he will do his all to win us another flag.

This question isn't for you BBP but does anyone really doubt his commitment?  Two flags then a chance to set himself up for life financially.  I wouldn't begrudge him that.

 

Before folks go too hard on Gus, remember Viney didn't renew his contract, after considering other offers until our season was over.  No one doubts Jack's leadership or commitment, altho if I went back to the threads of the day the dialogue would be much like this thread.

We are second on the ladder with finals around the corner, lets enjoy it.

Spot on Binman, club is bigger than anyone at the end of the day. 

He's right about one thing though, it's one of the biggest decisions he'll ever make. Leaving a bit on the table to potentially be back for more premiership reunions or maximising that nest egg. The correct answer is not the same for everybody.
