With globalization not having kicked off entirely and the country still rebuilding after WW2, the nearest equivalent they could find was the dirty bird. For some reason, it caught on with the mainstream populace and fried chicken has been what you eat for Christmas dinner ever since. Also to clarify, I've just discovered we are getting our fried chicken from a local joint in the country town I live in. You actually have to reserve it a good one month in advance from KFC to have any chance of picking up your 24 piece bucket. We were a bit late in getting in the queue. My kids are taught Japanese in primary school and told me about this tradition today, I thought they were pulling my leg! I know its traditional for Jewish people to eat Chinese food on Xmas day in the US but KFC on Xmas day in Japan (a country which I assume doesn't even celebrate Xmas) is another thing entirely. I lined up twice (not during the breaks) and it took over 30 mins each time. at the end of half time they ran out of beer, which is remarkable when they knew exactly how many would attend and not too many were drinking a lot. had to hit the spirits I went to grab a beer at 3/4 time and the queue on level 1 (GA section) was too long. So I ran upstairs and went into the bar on level 2 which was instant service and a perfect view of the G. Quote

When that was low or gone the MCC then turned the taps on. Really? That’s yuk, we’re drinking stale beer! The catering was inadequate, and the plastic cups in the bars, not ok. but the day was so fantastic, complaining is irrelevant (of me) it was such a happy day, headed over to the London tavern after, huge fun, great to be immersed in the red and blue. 💙❤️💙 1 Quote

(But don't forget about Dejima 😉) I feel you mate, been over 6 years for me and the pangs of homesickness definitely became harder to handle with the Dees suddenly becoming the best footy team inthe world. I am absolutely intent on getting back for next september, cannot miss the chance of seeing another one. 👊 ❤💙 Quote

Northern Summer 292 Posted December 6, 2021 Posted December 6, 2021 (edited) I went along for part of it yesterday. I said it before and i'll say it again, I still think it would have been better to stage a massive Best and Fairest count whilst replaying highlights of the entire season throughout (i.e. passages of play when each round's votes read out). It would have been a 'live' event, and unique in that it is something that is generally too exclusive for most to attend. Don't get me wrong, it was obviously a successful day purely based on crowd numbers, but I think that would have been far more engaging than replaying a game we have already watched a million times on what are small screens from our seats at the MCG (which they are from a distance) for 2.5 hours. A live Best and Fairest count would have led well into the winner celebrations and the belated Premiership celebrations. Edited December 6, 2021 by Northern Summer Quote

Dees_In_October 3,515 Posted December 6, 2021 Posted December 6, 2021 Other highlights: The little cameo from Noel McMahon on the big screen was an unexpected moment of amusement - reckons the '21 team is "half as good" as the one from his day. Probably one of the biggest laughs of the day in what was expected to be a touching or emotional video - just funny instead. The tiny red-headed pitch invader who got away from his (was it Lever's son again?) minders and made a break for the centre circle while the players' families were gathering for the presentation. What's a grand final without that? A bunch of the players deciding it was a good luck to have their polo collars folded over their footy jumpers. Stylish. Hibberd re-enacting his run with the cup! BDA 23,048 Posted December 6, 2021 Posted December 6, 2021 The one pointless aspect of the day were the 2 screens set-up at ground level on the far side of the ground. Far too small to be of any use. Perhaps a condensed replay as well, there were parts which cut quite easily be cut. 1 Quote
