If WC offer him $8M on a 6-7 year deal, then the why come to WC is pretty clear. He doesnt seem to be that type of person, but can anyone really blame him if he did take the carrot?

WC or any club for that matter would be utterly insane to offer him that. Granted he is a star and will get better but that's a 24-25 year olds contract, at earliest.

This contract whether at Melbourne or elsewhere is 2-3 years tops, in the 700k-750k range. Salary rates and ranges will change by 2025 at which point provided his performance has continued he can request 1 million a year.

Could this be real money if everyone here, at MFC, is entitled to some of the money as well as the success?

You talk perfect sense. Unfortunately that doesnt necessarily transfer across into the footy bubble... If a team really wants LJ, that is probably what it takes to get his signature today. A lot of risk on both sides.

MFC know this is unlikely and hence defer the big money contract a few years to buy some time and more cap space. I also think right now that 700-750 is still too high but that is probably what it takes to keep him. Would be interesting to see what Demonlanders think he is worth right now.

You'd hope that the likes of Lever and May would take less money in their follow up contract despite now being All Australians and Premiership players.  It's going to take cuts from them, Gawn, Harmes, Brayshaw, Tmac etc to keep our up and coming stars.

Besides Brayshaw who is also out of contract, i think all of them have taken unders in their recent contracts. The big one will be Lever and May given they probably took a larger chunk of cash having to be pulled out of their clubs. i cannot imagine them taken too much less though as they are still AA defenders. In May's case, he will most likely retire at MFC. Lever is still quite young though and would be demanding top dollar.

i can only think of one player that young who moved for a $M contract

and look at how that turned out

$M contracts for someone that young are just crazy, set a bad precedent and wreck a team's salary cap

media just recklessly like to promote this craziness for clickbait

What are Viney and Oliver on??

If I'm Lever and May I wouldn't be taking less money. The same applies with Gawn. They are in their prime and entitled to get paid accordingly. Jackson and the up and coming stars will get their big payday when they reach the AA level of Gawn, Lever and May.

Brayshaw on the other hand has already got his big payday after his 2018 season. The club won't say this to his manager, but they could argue that Gus owes us a slight haircut on his next contract. Tmac has taken a haircut when he extended his last year of his contract to three years. Harmes has also had his big payday, so his next deal probably won't be on bigger dollars.

CYB he will be wealthy wherever he plays. Over his career he could earn $6 to $12 million. For me there is no difference, so I would chase flags. And before you say I'm crazy consider how long and well you could live on $6 million well invested.

True Mandee.  But his status , and then perhaps resulting earning capacity, will be immeasurebly more as a triple premiership player than someone who won one at 19 and did nothing team success-wise after that.  Just looking at the long term marketing messages and strategy here.

for example, Luke Hodge, seen as an elder statesman now speaking with authority on the back of great leadership CV and 3 flags.

TMac already took a massive cut.

Fair call on TMac - forgot he'd already been through that.

Well it comes down to whether they want team success or not.  May and to a lesser extent Lever have had their big payday and now also have a premiership.  You pay overs when you attract talent from other clubs (in the same way that Jackson will be offered more from other clubs than us).  But when you have 3 players in the top 5-10 in the comp in your team and you're not one of them, then you can't expect the same big bucks.  I'm sure they'll be well compensated... but there is a salary cap and unless some take a haircut, you lose an Oliver or a Jackson or a host of role players that you can't replace.

Lever came across on $700-$800k and May similar.

That is unders for what they are.

Petracca is around $900k which is better value than Jake Bowey on his rookie $100k.

Langdon on $500k…

We have some team friendly deals people. We may have to say goodbye to a best 18 player to keep Jackson, Oliver and Brayshaw.

Adam Cerra wanted to come to the Dee's. His manager decided a trade couldn't be done by the Dee's without the available draft pick...

Doesn't matter how much he gets offered by either WC or Freo. How do they get the trade collateral to make it happen - would be 2 top 5 draft picks and solid B+/a grader at the trade table.... surely his Manager tells him stay at the Dee's until FA  - wherever he might end up the price to pay would cripple the club he goes too (and both WA options are pretty crape anyway ATM)

it's not like he won't get paid well regardless. Then supermax contract at FA

'Ben' - it's like you've been in the system a long time - and you know what you're talking about.

Essential reading for today.  Wayne carey's article in this mornings Age on Luke Jackson.  Says it all .

"...Greatness is more attainable with greatness around you..."   and that Gawn, Trac , Oliver etc  help make Luke great.

He'll stay (IMO)  for the reasons Carey covers.   Big money will then await him as a 2-3 time flag hero. - and good luck to him then anyway.

It's a win/win either way.

He's a budding star. And if he leaves, we know we'll be getting a ridiculous offer.

Can't lose.

Dees.

I have no doubt he will sign on for at least 2 years. After that who knows, but by that stage he could be so ingrained in the Dees culture and club he couldn't imagine leaving.

I agree Sideshow, but I also think that our culture dictates that if Dogga REALLY wants to go at the end of the year, we will find a way to get a deal done.  However, I think this is a most unlikely scenario.

Don't totally agree.

Let's say he leaves and we get two top 10 picks - There's no guarantee they turn out great, and there's even less chance they can make an instant impact.

That means we'd have all of Gawn, May, Brown and TMac entering the twilight of their careers with an even younger list, as well as players like Trac, Oliver, Viney, Langdon, Lever, Salem etc who are in their peak and we need to be making the most of.

While we may get back 'equal value' from a draft pick perspective, it does have a big effect on the overall picture IMO.

All that aside from us losing a one of a kind player.

I'm just going to shut my eyes, and hold my breath

Hes a young kid that loves the dees and has just tasted premiership success.

He isnt going anywhere

He’ll stay for 6 more years and win 3-4 more Premierships then head west so we can start a mini rebuild to begin our next dynasty. Can see us winning 7-8 Flags in the next 20 years

You've left out the the myriad of options we'd have use those hypothetical two top 10 picks. Whether it's draft, trade or both, you're completely underestimating the ammunition we'd have.

Jackson is great. Two top 10 picks would be great.

We win.
