Farewell Luke Jackson

Recommended Posts

I just returned from Perth on a Virgin Flight and met a well-known player manager and forward scout for the swans the player manager stated that Freo are waiting on Lobb to Decide to go to the Bulldogs they will have to give up plenty for Him that will open the way for Jackson if he decides to go Freo  there has been no indication that he wants to leave also he has a big Knee Problem that requires an operation.

Melbourne will want plenty maybe Young or Serong have been spoken about among the Managers one interesting point that was made is Jackson appears happy with Melbourne and the WCE have not indicated any Interest and are concerned that he has no Forward Craft.

The Forward scout told me that Don Pyke of the Swans is a Brilliant Strategest and is the big reason for their improved Form he maybe the Coach of Essendon

Also, he said Goodwin is very Conservative COACH   and not daring the issue compared to other sides success in the Finals has been the enthusiasm that youth brings is infectious Melbourne needs to be daring

The player Manager told me THERE WILL BE CHANGES AT THE END OF THE Year with coaches.

Lastly what our strength the defense has become our weakness other sides realize that if the ball is below their knees they panic.

I think we have blown it but still have firm belief in those proud leaders Max Clarry Viney May and Brayshaw that they may prevail

Clayton doesn’t only touch the ball 19 times a game, you would expect a player playing as many midfield minutes as hopper you would have more than 19 touches with bugger all score involvements.

If you read my post you would see I said baulking at his value of two first rounders, and compared him statistically to Sparrow, which the numbers do not lie.

One season in what 8 making the AA 40 squad doesn’t give you a value of 2 first rounders.
He isn’t all Australian, as you alluded to he is a pure mid that has only ever averaged 26 touches in his best season, he doesn’t kick goals, he has little score involvements… so yes I am perplexed at the potential trade value of 2 first rounders.

Where do you get 19 from? His career average per disposals is 22. If you're talking about this year alone then you would know he missed 15 games this year due to a significant injury.

So you're basing this stats alone on a bloke that's had a season impacted by significant injury? that's a cheap shot really. I mean even those numbers alone are far better is far better then Sparrows.

The numbers dont lie, you're right. So that means he absolutely smashes Sparrow out of the water in every stats as a midfielder. Where on earth do you think Sparrow is better than Hopper from a midfield stats point of view?

I've just pointed out that he was in the All Australian squad of 40 as midfielder. Its his best season as a midfielder. What more do you want then? You keep banging on about how he doesnt kick enough goals as a midfielder but yet he's legitimate 3 goals behind Clayton Oliver for career goals and has missed more games due to injury.

He's not worth 2 first rounds picks but he's absolutely worth a first round pick and a player I'd happily have at Melbourne.

A lot to unpack here but the comments re. Jackson's knee and Melbourne’s defensive issues are spot on. Jackson is set for knee surgery this off season.

On the defensive concerns I raised a similar concern in another thread, we defend well but transition poorly, and struggle with high pressure small forwards. Hence struggles against Sydney, Collingwood, Bulldogs, and even Freo earlier in the season. I am worried about both Raynor and Cameron on Friday night, they could be genuine game winners.

Both played against us last time and we won by over 10 goals.

What has you worried P?

And what would we talk about if no one shared?

Thanks 🙏🙏🙏

Not sure why people question  @Ferghus31.  He has had 4 posts in two years with no history of trolling or making stuff up.

I accept that what he has related is what he was told.  How much is accurate he has no way of knowing but it was good of him to report to DL.

Happy to hear this info and we make up our own minds.

Very good insights from Ferghus, I think it was just the last couple of lines that were a little difficult to interpret!

If he's needing surgery then why the hell does he continue to play. It doesn't seem very wise. I remember he had a minor tear to a tendon in r16 and that is still affecting him? Should have been dealt with sooner..

I think it was a persona view and one that I fully agree with.

There's no way we fold with Viney and Oliver (plus others) in the team. Our best shot will be given and let's hope its enough.

I saw them live at the gabba recently.  First 10 minutes will tell us if wer'e in it or not IMO

Jackson is a weird player.

He is a competitive beast when the ball hits the deck, for ground ball gets & tackles

But when the ball is in the air, he's timid. Nor does he seem capable of demanding the footy in link up play

He plays like one of those guys who deep down doesn't really want the pill in his hands.

Take whatever we can get for him and move on. He’ll never become the superstar he’s being touted as. Whether it’s mental or not, he’s been a liability at times this year. As it stands, he’s no good as a forward, no good as a midfielder, and average as a ruckman. He’s impressive for a big bloke when the ball hits the ground, but it’s a useless attribute to have as a tall player if you’re useless in the air!

Two first rounders or one of Hayden Young or Caleb Serong please!

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
