April 13, 20223 yr The AFL CBA is due to expire soon. Nothing will be signed by Jackson or Brayshaw until a new CBA is signed. To sign it before hand would negligent by both player & agent.

I agree with you but find it curious the number of AFL players whom have re-signed in spite of this (and I'm excluding the fringe players)

And also we recently signed Petracca until 2029 - the best player in the league - so I don’t see a finalised CBA as a large dependency.

Winning two flags in a row, and being a part of a young dynasty list, it’s hard to pass up. I might be in the minority here, but I actually think the opposite. The more success he has at the Dees, the more likely he is to leave and the easier it will be to depart. I absolutely hope he stays, he’s a genuine generational player, but if he was lucky enough to get two (hell, maybe I’ll dream and say 3), I could easily see him leaving Melbourne for the lure of cash back home.

April 13, 20223 yr Had a skim and not sure this has been said yet.. Re: new cba negotiations. As far as I'm aware players can sign now with a proviso that the contract will increase by the same % as any new cba salary cap increase. Edit: just googled to confirm. Its some kind of 'funds clause', about 50% of players currently have it. I'd suggest if LJ wants it in the new deal, it's his. Edited April 13, 20223 yr by Morgs_10

That’s interesting, I’ve always thought why wait for a new CBA just inc a clause that has an increase to match the new increase. I guess for a player with the potential of Jacko you still might wait to see and push for more.
April 13, 20223 yr Currently cap space would be tight not only this year but for the next 2 at least after that. But when the likes of Gawn, Brown, May, TMac etc finish up will have a lot of cap space free and Luke Jackson will only be 23 years old. Now at that point we will still have a lot of talent at the club but there’s no reason we can’t offer Jackson a very lucrative long term deal.

April 14, 20223 yr There's some speculation that the next CBA could see a minor increase if not a drop. The near absence of trades over the last two years is evidence of how tight the market is. Some may recall one commentator's view that your top five or six players should receive 50% of your cap. We could see different clubs taking different approaches to overall list management. MFC is in the enviable/unfortunate position of having around ten players who could argue that they should be paid in the top 20% percentile for their position. The additional issue with Luke J is that the West can offer another 100/200k per year in the form of personal appearances, media etc. Oh to live in interesting times
April 14, 20223 yr I suspect that if it was just a 2 year extension it would have been done. I think we are looking at a longer period, if he is happy to stay.

I think you are right. If it was a simple 2 year deal then I can't see why he wouldn't have got it done already. My suspicion is that we are trying to push for a long term deal and his management is, rightfully, playing hardball... probably calling Tim Lamb after each game going "mate the price has just gone up another $100k". And we could also be trying to get a few other 'smaller' deals done, or even perhaps trying to lock Oliver away long term which may enable us to up our offer to Jackson, as perhaps Oliver would be happy to accept more years at less coin like his best mate Trac. I think if Jackson was keen on going back to WA the jungle drums would be beating very loudly. He is too much of a hot commodity for this sort of stuff not to leak from 'inside sources'.
April 14, 20223 yr I think drafting his east freo team mate Trent Rivers was very shrewd. Not just a handy player but the boys came to Melb together so the home sickness isn't as strong. Think they'll both stay.
