Dear all, 

I was clearing up some old computer disks today in search of a work document and came across this gem that I found years ago.

It is a digital version of the Souvenir Football Record for September 19. 1964 - Grand Final Day - Melbourne v Collingwood.

It sold for the princely sum of 1 shilling.

Among other information provided, we learned that:

The new stadium to be built at Waverley would "Cater for all" and be the largest sporting arena in the English-speaking world. It was the product of "Scientific consideration".

Ross Faulkner "Native Brand Footballs".

3DB with Ron Casey and Lou Richards - uninterrupted descriptions of the 1964 night football matches.

Melbourne U19 list against Collingwood

"Philip Morris Presents Your Side of the Fence" with a picture of a guy smoking.

Gordon Collis wins Brownlow.

The full Melbourne Senior list for the game, then positions and later all their statistics. The tall players would be relatively modest height these days.

The week's big TV events - Team Preview (Thursday), Kevin Dennis Sports Parade (Friday), Football Reply (Saturday at 6), Football Inquest (Saturday at 7), World of Sport (Sunday at noon), Football Replay (Sunday at 2).

Melbourne won 14 lost 4 that season with a percentage of 138.1. Fitzroy didn't win a game.

John Peck (Hawthorn) 68 was the leading goalkicker.

I noticed the name Minton-Connell listed among our Under 19 team.  That was Michael, whose brother Adrian also tried out for Melbourne, but neither played senior football.

Adrian married Peter Hudson's sister Pam and their son Simon played for Carlton, Sydney, Hawthorn and Bulldogs.

Very interesting that a letter says the count back for the Brownlow should be scrapped and should be joint winners. This didn’t happen until 1981 (17 years after this game.)

And the writer won cigarettes for this winning letter. What if he’d been a kid!

Copy of the team list from the 1964 Grand Final Footy Record signed by all of the players who attended the 50th anniversary reunion in 2014 at the Bentleigh Club. 14 attended with some sadly deceased and others unwell or overseas.

I had the good fortune to attend and spend a few hours with my heroes from 1964. There are some things in life that bring great joy and happiness.

It's a thrill to have our captain, RDB, and vice captain, Hassa, still with us to lead us to the game. 1964 Footy Record team list signed14092021.pdf

What a terrific find!

Surely there's scope for the club to do a mock-up putting a modern one next to the old, with Haymes Paint instead of the British Paints. Gotta look after the sponsors.

Also, how funny is that 'view of Waverly Stadium' with its projected capacity of 166,648!

I've run into a physical copy of this in the last few years after my great uncle passed. Real fun flicking through that, loved the big deal about Waverley and how a thriving metropolitan hub was in the eastern suburbs future!

I can see Light Fingers No 1 in Race 2 of the form guide there, with the races at Mooney Valley.

Went on to win the Melbourne Cup in 1965.

For any history buffs, the complete footy record collection dating back to 1912 when it was first published has been digitised by the State Library of Victoria. One record per round which means only one set of team sheets obviously but the rest of the magazine was the same each week.

Didn’t they release a book that had reprints of ALL grand final records? I was going to buy it but baulked at the price.

Funny how back then, things were spelled “programme” instead of “program” like they are now. 

The original spelling was "program". Then some English sailed a boat to America and lived there. They took and kept the original spelling. Meanwhile the English decided to fancy up their spelling and make it "more French". And we here in Oz (all British citizens until 1948 I think) naturally used the English spelling.

Now that our language is becoming more American than English we have adopted the American spelling and it's come full circle.

Fascinating reading. The Pies were very tall compared to us! The whole VFL park scenario seemed very 60’s - desperate for a kind of space age modernity. Loved that spectator vision was assumed to be perfect from everywhere. Pity about the 3km from the back of the stands to the far end goals.

I have the paper version of the 1964 record which I purchased on the way into the ground with my father and my cousin.

Unfortunately both have passed away never to see this day when we have the best chance to win the ultimate prize.

I can remember watching the U19 and reserves Grand Final before the big one I was supremely confident we would win after we destoryed the Pies in the Second Semi-Final, but the kicking for goal by the Demons almost brought them undone.

I remember the Gabelich run and Brian Roet almost ran him down and the panic in the Pies stacking the Back line only to see Neil Crompton kick the winning goal.

The failure to build a train line out there doomed these hopes - the goal was for the AFL to have their own ground unbeholden to the MCC/Vic government and play the entire finals series there each year (as a neutral ground).

Indeed. Precision in projection down to the umpteenth decimal point, and missed it by miles in the actual execution. Talk about smoke and mirrors!

That day in 1964 was not only our last premiership, it was also the last day that the ‘G was solely our fortress - the very next game there was Rd1 in 1965, Richmond’s home game against us. There’s a sort of eerie symmetry in seeing the program for that day trumpeting the League’s stalking horse for moving the emphasis away from the Home of Footy, while we were about to start a journey of finals wilderness.

Pretty ambitious stuff by the then-VFL!  They really needed the rail line down North Rd / Wellington Rd for that ground. Jeez it was an icy, barren, soulless venue. 

Interesting to see that several of Geelong's team from last week's Prelim played in the Reserves Grandfinal in 64!...😁
