When has he started to fire? VFL he has always been good. The last two years Goodwin needed him to take marks, run and convert. Couldn't come through on one of those areas. The reason we got Ben Brown and the reason Tom Mcdonald are firing is because Weideman was letting down the entire structure of the team.

    He aint going anywhere. 

    Why would you leave a club you've been at thats finally competing and will for the next 5 years?

    One injury to either Jackson, Brown or Tmac and he's in

     If he keeps on kicking a few in the Seconds may be able to trade for a pick 20/30, otherwise keep as injury insurance.

    Reminds me a lot of David Cordner  who struggled to play fifty games or so.

    MFCSS has me screaming to find a spot in the team for Weideman so he doesn’t crack the sads playing in the VFL and leave. 

    But logic says he’s just going to have to wait. I think he’s a kid with a good head on his shoulders who understands how it is. His injury came at a most inopportune time, he’s behind two legitimate AFL key forwards. His time WILL come - we’re only 1/3 of the way in to a long season. Surely, he sees that he’s valuable, and he wants to be a part of what we’re up to in the long run.

    Would he prefer to go to a non-contender for game time that comes more easily, or does he back himself to break in to the team here?

    Can see Fritsch missing this week and Weideman coming in. They are not dissimilar in style and Fritta looked like he was unwell or carrying an injury on Saturday night.

    Weid has had a few opportunities to impress at senior level

    Unfortuantly he failed to some degree and this has made his transition even harder

    He has to work hard, improve some glaring deficiencies in his game and be patient

    Nonsense.

    TMac's resurgence has zero relation to Weideman, or Brown for that matter (other than healthy competition for a place in the team). And Brown was recruited to partner Weideman, not TMac.

    Also, the Weid's shown plenty of signs, but it's revisionist to suggest that he's performed consistently in the VFL before now. In 2017, he kicked 14 goals from 14 games (6 came in one match). He kicked a couple of bags in 2018, but had other games where he couldn't get near it. 2019 was ruined by injury. That's not a knock on him, just the reality for most young key forwards.

    Last year was his first real run at it. And he performed damn well for the most part - despite an awful final month of the season, he averaged 1.5 goals per game overall - ranked #13 league wide. 

    He's on the cusp of becoming a gun key forward. They don't grow on trees.

    I noticed that as well - its a good message for the boys.

    We are also are presuming that Weeds is doing everything asked of him in the VFL, there is a very real possibility that he isnt showing one aspect of his game that the Coaches have asked of him. It was interesting in the post match interview Goody was asked about Weeds and he said something along the lines of 'its a team sport and Weeds knows that'.

    i think it's easy to forget how little he's actually had; missed a lot of underage footy too

    he's had some super weird injuries over the journey

    Are you able to show me another time Sam has kicked 14 goals in 3 consecutive games in the VFL? If not, the answer to your question is right now. 

    This conversation has been had ad-nauseum, but I'll say it again - key forwards take time to develop. Sam is coming into the what should be the beginning of his prime. Most great forwards don't become great until at least 5 or 6 years in the system. There is an abundance of examples available on this. Tom Hawkins comes to mind, in his first 5 season he was floating around the 20-30 goals a year mark, then kicked 62 in his 6th season. 

    From a list management perspective, are you expecting BB and Tmac to be fully fit and to be our number 1 and 2 key forwards for the next 5 years? Nope, they're too old for that. Even in the immediate term, what other depth do we have for key forwards? Mitch Brown wont be getting a contract next year. 

    You say the reason we got Ben Brown was because Sam was letting down our structures? Is that your inside knowledge talking or just your opinion? It sounds ridiculous to me, because it was pretty clear at the time that we got Ben Brown as the number 1 to play alongside Sam, not Tom. We tried to trade Tmac, remember? 

    Key forwards don't grow on tree's, letting Sam go would be an enormous gamble that I don't think we can afford to make. I don't see the value proposition in any case.

    It’s a major concern, but the thing is Weid isn’t any better.

    There’s room for 1 big guy who can clunk a mark and doesn’t get out marked, but otherwise coaches will favour mobile tall options who can do more. Ie. Jackson, T Mc, Fritsch.

    The advantage Brown has over Weideman is he has much more advanced leading patterns.

    Sam took a step forward in doing that last year but to be a consistent AFL player and overcome his lack of athleticism he has to be even sharper. And at peak fitness, and consistently brave in the air and with his agility at the best it can be. As good as his Casey form has been I still think he’s got improvement in him.

    TMac is up and about, playing with focus and aggression for ball and opposition, Weideman should be taking note, and upping his agro accordingly, as he's struggled to produce that level of intent for 4 quarters consistently in his career. i.e. learn to play angry.

    No. He’s in the team to kick goals, which he does. 132 games for 292 goals is more goals then all our forwards combined.

    Club had the choice Weid or McKay

    They preferred Weid

    If he performs then its a good choice but he is simply not performing well enough to push Fritter out at the moment

    Thing that disappoints me is his lack of aggression  for a big man in his 5th year

      There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

      I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.
