1987 final round.

Carlton captain Stephen Kernahan kicks a goal in the last minute to win the match and secure top spot for Carlton.  Carlton wins the flag.

Well done Maxy!!

especially considering we only had about six or seven who played to their normal standard

Spargs, Pickett, Brayshaw, BBB, Rivers, Bowey, Sparrow come to mind as doing a bit. Harsh judgement on the team, I reckon.

Loved Sparrow's game tonight. Good selection.

That kid made a great contribution across the game - tough, willing, capable, with vision and intent. Put up with the dirty stuff from Geelong and carried on like matured footballer.

Well done, Sparrow.

They’ll be busy then, cos there were a lot of them. And a lot of throwing from those cats too.

In the 2nd qtr, the umpires were letting 10m kicks (at best) be recognised as marks - particularly in Geelong's forward line. That was deliberate, outright cheating.

What a superb second half fight back.

Shows the value of winning clearances and contested ball!

Their forwards looked to good for us when they were walking out the front of stoppages. our backs are great, but nobody stops a very strong forward line like theirs when the pressure isn’t in the midfield.

A few disappointing players at times (smith and tmac for example), but, I think tmac is better for the run and smith showed signs. That being said, I am still not sold on smith. He can stay in an play, as long as the pressure is up on the middle and he just defends!

Last night also shows how seriously people undervalue Viney. I was going to post mid week, but I prefer to just read on here normally, but all those who want him gone or say others are better, watch the pressure and effort and passion he showed. Look at his pressure acts. He is a very, very good player and some don’t value it. If he was doing what he does at another club most on here would say we should chase him!

and finally, how would young Brad Close feel right now? Wonder what was said to him post game with his brain fade? Or Stanley, who actually played pretty well? Who stood 10 metres from Max at the end when he took the mark as he was going to protect the goal line!

Just hope we bring the heat from the start next week, as our best is the best in the comp!

And I don’t know if I will sleep for a week if we actually win the flag!

Viney was excellent. Gets a bad wrap here. Couple of quietish games returning from injury and people want him dropped/traded/lined up against the wall and shot!

And then there's the bullish that Viney, Oliver  Harmes  etc al, can't play in the same side.

What a night!

Now to cruise slowly through the Gameday thread and see how the game was reflected there...

Don’t do it! For your own sake, your health, your sanity!

My only regret is that it did not happen with the stadium full of cats. Imagine?

They had their moments but can do better.

That is all.

Single malt will fix your problem in two ways!

I actually thought Smith played ok and hope he keeps his spot next week. The player that I was most impressed with was Bowey who played a ripper in a high pressure match. However I was nervous when I saw him 1:1 with Hawkins!

The MFC players looked so happy at the end of the game.

What a beautiful release valve for this seasons challenges.

How about Williams jumping into the songs huddle. Knows the moment and gees them up for a celebration.

My guess is a day off and back to business Monday.

Everyone has already covered how great the win was, but the deliberate out of bounds was screwed us all night the ones paid against and the ones not paid for

That last deliberate was just a disgrace  - absolutely no feel or understanding of the game maggot.  Why would a team striving to get a goal within possibly the last seconds do that?  No understanding at all.  Should be hauled over the coals, but won’t

Best win since 1987 Western Oval - down by a goal at 3/4 time and were we kicking against the breeze in the last?

but to win over Dogs who would have Gawn into the then Final 5 while Hawks came from nowhere to fix up Geelong to allow us to take Geelong's spot.

I love Max

I wish we could go back to the 50s-60s, to see what this Club really was and how that last quarter, last night, was the epitome of such a footballing era. In the weeks ahead of us, getting to - and winning -  a GF would be enormous; to finish on top of a minor premiership list as we did with so much heart is, for me, very rewarding and more important that the short-term road ahead. Carna Dees!

Football was so very different then.

 - none of the piling on the players with the ball ; free kick every time for a push in the back

 - there was a principle of protecting the player with the ball

  - pack marks three (no punching to spoil when I was a child)deep with the man in front always paid

   - short pass across the back line and you’d be dragged every time

one of the differences these days is the ability to kick accurately under pressure

You didn’t get that fifty years ago

or five

Tom Sparrows last quarter was huge. Won some crucial one on one contested marks and his tackling pressure was immense. Petracca gave him a pump up after the gave due to the sacrificial role he plays in the midfield.

I know he had to kicks smothered, but I thought he was really good last night.

Pretty special he gets to play a qualifying final in front of his family next week.

I was critical of Spargo early but he played very well after half time.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.

  • CASEY: Box Hill

The Casey Demons ended the regular season on a positive note and gained substantial momentum leading into the finals when they knocked the Box Hill Hawks off the top of the VFL ladder in their final round clash at Casey Fields. More importantly, they moved out of a wild card position in the finals race and secured a week's rest as they leapfrogged up the ladder into fifth place with their decisive 23-point victory over the team that had been the dominant force in the competition for most of the season.
