(Not) sorry to be a pedant but, if we win the next two games, this week will be the penultimate and the Grand Final would then be the ultimate.

I thought Pedant was your middle name!!

This news with Lachie Neale is strange really. Neale takes up a 5 year contract and moves to Brisbane with his young wife.

Surely the young couple would know that they would start a family within those 5 years and have a plan for support given the contract value.

To be fair, covid and constant border closures weren’t in the picture back then.

Anyone who watching the Gus and Gawny podcasts knows Gus is a very important part of the culture we continue to build

Remove elements of that at your peril

Personally rather have Gus playing for us than Cerra - not sure what the fuss is about him tbh

Agree, couldn't give a toss about Cerra, don't need him, not interested at all.

Brayshaw is a great contributor on and off the field. I can’t see him going and would be devastated if he did. Cerra is good but not worth what it would take to get him. We need to continue to retain the great talent we have.

The next 2 years at Freo rather than the remaining 2 at Brisbane are likely worth at least a half million dollars extra for Neale.

Or at 28 yo and a Brownlow in tow he is worth more now than in 2 years time when the contract is up.

From what I xan see his 44 possessions do not hurt the opposition too much this year so his currency is now and he knows it. Rip 4 years from Fremantle.

Can't see what covid has to do with it. Neale has a contract to an employer for 5 years to live away from Perth signed 3 years ago.

Lockdowns will be a thing of the past once 80-85% vaccination rate is achieved by the end of the year.

You can't see what COVID's got to do with it?

When he signed his 5 year contract no one foresaw border closures.

They may well have planned on starting a family three years back, but they may also have not. Not everyone plans their entire life around children, no matter what previous generations might have done.

Regardless, the situation three years ago is completely different to what it is now and if it turns out that being separated from family in WA is hitting them hard, that should be completely understandable to everyone.

Having said that, he's had a five year contract and been paid accordingly, and Brisbane has framed a list around him, so I'd understand if they want to take a relatively hard stance, but Neale's position is completely understandable.

Everyone would include me and it doesn't. Sorry to disagree but I do. I also understood that he is South Australian.

Maynard doesn't excite me. Has quite a few brain fades. I do like his attack on the ball though, He is manic.

He's not what we need.

We need to add outside run and delivery skills. Someone like Bowie only taller! Laurie could be that person but is only 181cm. Maybe a Lukosias type.

You can't have enough class and where we sit we don't want to be adding second rate players.

We also need a back up ruckman. And eventually a replacement for McDonald.

I am also looking forward to the day that players are clamouring to get to the Dees because they want to play in finals..

Whst about our back up ruckman Dogga???

We can get better with skilled fast and outside players and also who finish off with goals.

There is currently as far as i know at 80% and that is Malta

Most other countries are aiming and accepting lower threshold

Israel is only at 60% double vaccinated coverage, though.

They hit 50% double vaccinated in March but have plateaued significantly since then.

Just read James Cousins delisted by the Hawks. I thought he was a very good midfielder for the Hawks against us in the “drawn” game.  In the absence of some of the Hawks better mids, Cousins competed strongly in the centre and had outside run. I thought he certainly looked AFL quality. One to watch over the summer pre season as I think he might get a spot at another club most likely.

I agree with Caro here. Neale is walking out on the Lions and they should play hardball.  He walked out on his contract with Freo and is doing it again.  I wouldn't be in a rush to have him in my team, gun player but a team man?

Neale is getting a bit of heat in the media.  Perhaps, rightly so.  Not only for wanting out but for reportedly not giving the club an inkling of his thinking at some stage.  And worse he didn't contact the club on Sunday night when the news broke in Perth.  Waited until the club called a meeting yesterday.

Completely blindsided them.  Lack of respect for his club and what it has helped him achieve.   Doubt he would have a Brownlow if he had stayed at Freo.

Not to mention that (reportedly) 70% of his 5 year contract has already been paid in the first 3 years.

which represents 10% extra on a 5 x 800k = $4M contract, so he is ahead $400k.....a fair bit of coin

Purple was quite scathing; called him a manipulator.  Ouch!

I suppose they will need the free babysitters around once the kid arrives.

God knows how short of time the wife will be, with all of those time consuming Instagram pics to upload every day and whatnot.

I'd hold the [censored] to his contract unless it was a clear win in a trade.

for front-ended contracts i can't believe they wouldn't have a claw-back clause if player breaks contract early

especially after beams, but it's just common sense anyway.

Yep. Lions burnt twice.  Surprised they took the risk.

Clubs should have a 'golden handshake' type clause for expensive interstate player to be paid at the end of the contract.  I suspect the AFLPA would kick up a fuss.

As suggested OTC last night, unless Freo can offer a really good trade - I'd be inclined if I were the Lions to make Neale stay for at least one more year of that contract and if he wants to be traded at the end of next year then he can be without them having been blindsided.

I understand COVID has changed the parameters somewhat, but I think the whole family angle is slightly overplayed and another 12 months would be quite manageable for most families.  Though far from ideal (but what is in this world) or not really understanding the nature of the circumstances of Neale and his partner, we do live in a modern first world country where he has been handsomely remunerated for his talents, and where it is likely (but not certain) that restrictions once we reach a vaccination threshold will be relaxed.

  • PREVIEW: Geelong

"It's officially time for some alarm bells. I'm concerned about the lack of impact from their best players." This comment about one of the teams contesting this Friday night’s game came earlier in the week from a so-called expert radio commentator by the name of Kane Cornes. He wasn’t referring to the Melbourne Football Club but rather, this week’s home side, Geelong. The Cats are purring along with 1 win and 2 defeats and a percentage of 126.2 (courtesy of a big win at GMHBA Stadium in Round 1 vs Fremantle) which is one win more than Melbourne and double the percentage so I guess that, in the case of the Demons, its not just alarm bells, but distress signals. But don’t rely on me. Listen to Cornes who said this week about Melbourne:- “They can’t run. If you can’t run at speed and get out of the contest then you’re in trouble.

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit.
Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?

  • CASEY: Gold Coast

For a brief period of time in the early afternoon of yesterday, the Casey Demons occupied top place on the Smithy’s VFL table. This was only made possible by virtue of the fact that the team was the only one in this crazy competition to have played twice and it’s 1½ wins gave it an unassailable lead on the other 20 teams, some of who had yet to play a game.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

In my all-time nightmare game, the team is so ill-disciplined that it concedes its first two goals with the courtesy of not one, but two, fifty metre penalties while opening its own scoring with four behinds in a row and losing a talented youngster with good decision-making skills and a lethal left foot kick, subbed off in the first quarter with what looks like a bad knee injury.
