Why would we trade him when he is contracted for another year and value can only increase. Crows would need to be paying massive overs, something like a mid first round pick given he was taken at 27 and shown himself to be at least capable.

I agree.

I doubt we’d entertain a trade for him unless we got Cerra through the door.

I would say if there was one thing he could work on it was his outside game? Quite one dimensional but so was Oliver in his under 18s year. He's worked incredibly hard and now has the perfect balance.

Smith won the Bushies best and fairest in his last year back in 2018 so he definitely had the credits in the bank as well as his impressive Vic Country performance. 

Thanks mate. Interesting we were still looking at inside mids then. I still believe we lack another clean bull. They don't have to be an A++er like Oliver, but if Oliver goes down, I think our midfield will too. He's been incredibly durable, but I hope we continue targeting the right inside mids.

I agree 100%.

Whilst touch wood we've been lucky this year so far, it'll only take a Oliver or Petracca to go down and that's where we are still bit light.

If anything its good for them. He'll be 29 next year and for a bloke that racks it up a fair bit he doesn't really have any hurt factor.

He's also part of their slow on ball brigade that's been killed by top sides due to their lack of pace.

They'll get a good 1st rounder and there's a bloke by the name of Deven Robertson who'll step straight into that role after another good solid pre season.

Pretty good short term replacement for Cerra as well for Freo so a bit of a win for them, Brisbane should get at least a top 10 pick in return, had this happened a week earlier they might have had a chat to Matt Crouch to see if he was keen to move North

I know the focus has been on Cerra and Maynard of late. I would love either in our side but with all things being equal, if there was a chance of landing Ben King end of next year (and I'm sure we have asked the question to his management already) then we should do everything possible to start clearing up cap space and determine the necessary drafting capital to get the deal done.  

Our midfield and backline is young enough to endure. BBB and TMac will hold it together for another year but having Kingy will be similar to how Richmond landed Tom Lynch.

Having Ben King would shore up our key forward position for the next 10 years.

It's a pipe dream but I think clubs like Essendon with a bit more cap maybe be able to offer better coin.

I think Cerra would be a great get and I agree that Oliver and Petracca are critical members of our midfield.

But I don't think we're as thin as you believe.  Sure we would suffer if one of them went down but we have Brayshaw on the wing to come back into the midfield and Viney, Harmes, JJ and Sparrow who have all proven themselves capable and the latter two will only be better next year.

For example: Petracca, Brayshaw, Viney, Harmes, Sparrow in the middle and JJ to the wing is still competitive 

I don't think we need to sell the farm to get Cerra which is what it may take.

i got the sense that they are not great cap wise either - the way they played hard ball with Stringer.. just a hunch so maybe wrong. 

It certainly is the missing piece and to get it done whilst keeping enough coin for Oliver, LJ, Kozzy & Rivers, we will need to make a sacrifice.

Perhaps he didn't like the then current culture at Freo, or the incumbent coach. Like most people, I assume he had every intention of honouring that deal with Brisbane - but things change, things evolve and 'what matters' becomes clearer, even if you are contracted and even if its in a 3 year period.

Is it a problem that things evolve, that people change their mind? I can't imagine the club has had no idea of his intentions until it was released in the media post last match of the season. And yes, it is just a place of work. Just like yours, with really important relationships, some less important, and yet still pragmatic decisions made about your families future.

Brisbane can choose to make him honour his contract (what other industry would do that for a human for another two years) but at what cost?

I actually think the AFL industry does a really good job of being transparent and helping employees that want to move on, get to a place of employment that they want to. Supporters are the ones that get blindsided due to their emotional baggage.

Given there has been very limited travel allowed interstate over the last 18 months and he has a job that allows him to easily shift back home, why the hell wouldn't he try?

You can not really argue with his output at Brisbane, he's not a Dayne Beams style mercenary.

Their draft capital is going to be very, very good after this and there are a couple of readymade starting mids available for trade, in Parker and Tom Mitchell, if they prefer

I don't have a problem with what he is doing, I am just commenting that Neale seems less focused on winning a flag and honouring contracts than the average player. He has a great opportunity with the Lions over the next couple of years. Freo should push on but are unlikely to be top 4 for a while yet

As you mention we have no idea of the his motivations and specific circumstances but I do find it curious

as much as id hate to admit it, I wouldnt be surprised, given our draft pick situation that in order to get Cerra, we might give up Brayshaw who might be happy to go. 

Im sure someone will start the Brayshaw to Freo conversation again!!

I've thought that all year. Brayshaw being played on the wing (by mutual agreement and clearly a win/win) feels like when James Frawley was played in the forward line for 5 months - telegraphing his move out of the club...mind you, happy if he stays.

Anyone who watching the Gus and Gawny podcasts knows Gus is a very important part of the culture we continue to build 

Remove elements of that at your peril

Personally rather have Gus playing for us than Cerra - not sure what the fuss is about him tbh

Brayshaw is not looking for a move, if one is made it has come from the coaching/list management team.

And highly highly unlikely to happen.

Brayshaw is a Melbourne (city) boy through and through there is no go home factor there. His parents are here his GF is from here, his mates are here, the only ppl not here are his brothers.

While its possible I reckon Sparrow would be crazy. He's had a breakout game in a final and will likely be a regular 22 next year for us. The seem to love him at the Dees.
