Honestly confused by the Weideman slander on the site. Weed put in a sub-par performance on the weekend but coming off an interrupted pre-season and needs continuity - has played 4 games. He is playing a selfless role and against one of the best backlines in the comp he competed and brought the ball to ground on a number of occasions for our smalls to capitalise.

I think we should back Weed in for at least the next four.

IN: Langdon

OUT: Melksham

I think that's overstating the commentary on Sam tbh

The vast majority acknowledge he has ability but its not clicking for him at present - there are various views put forward as to why he's not firing but its mostly constructive. I'd also suggest that the majority of posters want to persevere with Weid rather replace him (for now at least). I think on balance most people want to see some continuity for him so he can hopefully hit his straps and become a reliable player that impacts every week

This is a stab guess, but I think they really want to nail Boweys defensive game first. His offence is elite, but being able to defend first is something they'll be educating him first.

This was something Rivers spoke about last week was the high importance in being able to defend first and the rest falls into place with the offensive side.

Could be wrong though...

Interesting, because Lockhart debuted for us in the forward line. His first goal for the club (against Geelong) was a blinder, as were goals against the Bombers and Hawks in subsequent rounds. Then the decision was made to train him as a defender. I wonder if there was a similar approach with him as the one you’re suggesting with Bowey.

Also as an aside, not suggesting for a second the kid isn’t hugely talented, but how do you arrive at calling somebody who hasn’t played a game at AFL level “elite”?

I don’t really know what you are saying. Melksham from what I can see is playing a role across a number of line areas (fwd, wing, little mid) and then 40% on the bench. That is not an easy instruction for a kid to follow and succeed at.

Thats my point widen it comes to the hatred that Jake has to put up with on here - do we really want to get Chandler/whoever into replace those minutes? That is not setting someone up to succeed.

Ironically enough, it is that flexibility that Jake has that is beneficial to him staying in the team and seemingly, be ok with 45 mins of game time.

Thank you so much for this post, as well as your post before this one on the same subject, that being Jake Melksham’s role in the team. I can’t stand how maligned Jake is. And by his own team’s supporters, no less! Thank you for explaining about his role. I don’t have a “footy brain” so I’m forever learning. But what I lack in technical knowledge I more than make up for in passion. This is probably the best post I’ve seen about Jake in terms of what his role is.

Skipped the middle of the thread but I am concerned that Salem is not fit and may need a rest. Prefer him in the side but there is the long term outlook to consider.

Melksham clearly goes for positivelingers.

Weed stays a week. At the game you could see how hard to works off the ball to keep our structure and I doubt Brown could do that. Hard to know if he will make it but showing all the signs of being very close to getting the confidence he needs to start clunking the marks. On at least two occasions he appeared to deliberately knock the ball forward to the smalls one of which led to a Kozzie goal.

Out: Melksham

In Langdon.

Weid actually presented attacked the pack and bought the ball to ground creating goals. Brown hasn't played for 3 weeks. They won't be bringing him in (Mitch or Ben). Weid needs to just start marking a few and converting and he is set. Coming off a restricted Pre Season and he wouldn't have much fitness from the VFL because of that stupid Zoning rule not allowing him to play a normal AFL system.

Stick with him. Hopefully he comes good in a GF like Hawkins did!

I like Melk for what he can do but get really frustrated by what he doesn't do.. and he ain't doing much lately.

Weid stays in.. no VFL means you cant bring Ben Brown in.. he needs miles in his legs.. Weid got hands to most.. i think he needs another week or 2 to see what he can do.

OUT: MELK

IN: LINGERS

Got some notes from the practice match yesterday:

- Chandler was phenomenal.  Had ridiculous numbers with very high possession and kicked 4

- Jones played well and is a class above at that level

- BB was good without dominating

- MB very quiet

The games were joint teams from Pies, Bombers and Blues

Could be a few surprises this week apparently, mostly in terms of injuries, but also one related selection surprise.

It's only 'talk' at this stage, so don't want to freak anyone out.

Will post more if I get more solid info.

Weid must be dropped. Nearly nearly each week doesn't cut it.

BBB for Weid

Langdon for Melky.

Salem to have an extended rest with the bye and Bowey to debut?

Ok, I'll just reiterate this is all unconfirmed so take it with a big grain of salt:

Salem and Lever out. One other player out too but not sure who. Apparently one of the brand new blokes a chance to debut as well, I'm assuming Turner as he's a similar role to Lever from what I understand.

Again, very very much unconfirmed at this point.

?thanks for the info but I can’t see how one of the new blokes comes in.  They wouldn’t have even trained with the team as yet.  I assume Salem must be sore with going off late last week.

Nertz. Lever did have a ankle complaint last week.

Surely the 25 year old Decase if anyone?

I think anyone with a small yet persistent niggle may be rested this week. Last chance for a good rest before finals.
Just hope it doesn’t cost us the win. We can hardly afford to lose to bottom sided given our draw in the second half of the season.

The filth will choke the game. If both Salem and Lever are missing get ready for a huge dose of MFCSS.

Lever not 100% sure, could be foot/toe, but yeah ankle could make sense too.

The new player stuff was just a 'chance to play' comment.

But again guys, please take it all with a grain of salt, it's from a few different places and far from confirmed.

Interesting. Fritsch had some ankle trouble in the last match too, so wondered if it was him.

We are in a position to give players who are sore a couple of weeks off and then set for a big second half of the season.

It’s been reported that five Victorian teams played a combined scratch match yesterday. Does anyone know if our players  were included in the game and if so, how they went?

Confirmed in an article on page 46 in this morning’s Herald Sun (VIC PLAYERS SCRATCH ITCH THROUGH UNOFFICIAL MATCHES by Sam Landsberger - paywall no link). However, only four clubs participated in the “club-run match simulation” for players not selected in Round 12 - Carlton, Collingwood , Melbourne and Essendon.

There’s very little else in the article and no Melbourne players named so it doesn’t provide much insight into possible team changes. Perhaps an “insider” might be prepared to name some names of those involved and how they went??

Think Goodwin holds Melksham in high regard.

I am sure he does, or Melk has some photos ??

Turner probably hasn’t even met all of the team - no way he will walk into an established stable back 6.  Weed back would be more likely, though if Lever isn’t up to it maybe Majak?

Salem doesn’t look quite right since he’s come back, I’d be keen to give him an extended break. Would Bowey in for Salem he worth a go?

Every week we keep expecting Melksham to be dropped, and every week he seems to survive. I would really like to hear from the coaches on what KPI’s he’s hitting that’s keeping him in the side. I mean he has to be doing something right to maintain his spot, right?

I think Weid gets another chance at it, I feel like I’m saying the things I used to say about Watts but I really want him to succeed!

The undefeated Demons venture across the continent to the spiritual home of the Port Adelaide Football Club on Saturday afternoon for the inaugural match for premiership points between these long-historied clubs. Alberton Oval will however, be a ground familiar to our players following a practice match there last year. We lost both the game and Liv Purcell, who missed 7 home and away matches after suffering facial fractures in the dying moments of the game.

  • AFLW REPORT: Richmond

A glorious sunny afternoon with a typically strong Casey Fields breeze favouring the city end greeted this round four clash of the undefeated Narrm against the winless Tigers. Pre-match, the teams entered the ground through the Deearmy’s inclusive banner—"Narrm Football Weaving Communities Together and then Warumungu/Yawuru woman and Fox Boundary Rider, Megan Waters, gave the official acknowledgement of country. Any concerns that Collingwood’s strategy of last week to discombobulate the Dees would be replicated by Ryan Ferguson and his Tigers evaporated in the second quarter when Richmond failed to use the wind advantage and Narrm scored three unanswered goals.

  • CASEY: Frankston

The late-season run of Casey wins was broken in their first semifinal against Frankston in a heartbreaking end at Kinetic Stadium on Saturday night that in many respects reflected their entire season. When they were bad, they committed all of the football transgressions, including poor disposal, indiscipline, an inability to exert pressure, and some terrible decision-making, as exemplified by the period in the game when they conceded nine unanswered goals from early in the second quarter until halfway through the third term. You rarely win when you do this.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Richmond

Round four kicks off early Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields, as the mighty Narrm host the winless Richmond Tigers in the second week of Indigenous Round celebrations. With ideal footy conditions forecast—20 degrees, overcast skies, and a gentle breeze — expect a fast-paced contest. Narrm enters with momentum and a dangerous forward line, while Richmond is still searching for its first win. With key injuries on both sides and pride on the line, this clash promises plenty.

  • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.
