Good win?

Any hope of some acknowledgment of Goodwin's brilliant coaching performance? Completely out thought LB. Must be galling to those here who wanted him gone.

Great coaching. I think many who had questions over Goodwin had them due to lack of success or consistency of success. Most, if not all, would be more happy that we're playing so well.

Agree Goody has improved along with the team  Hats off to him he is having a super season.

No question there is a lot more brains in the preparation and in the box now.

We look like a really professional serious contender who has a real idea of where we are at.

That's  in sharp contrast to some journos and experts who are slowly coming around about us.

There's no question now, every player has fully bought into their role. And, the coach has grown into his.

Great coaching and execution. We looked way more organised and structured than usual even.

I wonder whether the absence of crowd noise allowed Lever and May to be even more effective with giving directions for defensive structure.

Our defensive structure and running really seemed to trouble the opposition and they constantly appeared to have nowhere to go.

I have already praised Goodwin in the post game thread but happy to do it again. Our team defence this year has been fantastic and Goodwin’s tactics last night were great, so full credit to Goodwin. We still have lots to work on but right now I have faith in all the coaching team.

Yes I wanted him sacked know doubt about it, but right now I am absolutely stoked he is proving me wrong long may it continue.

Richo did make mention of Jake yelling instructions pretty much all night and clearly he was being heard. And his voice was so hoarse during the interview.

I wanted him sacked but couldn't be more happy to be proven wrong.

Yze and Williams have been great additions to the coaching set-up but Goody deserves the lions share of the credit. Even when things were going badly in previous seasons it was obvious he never lost the players. You can see the rapport he has with them and i think coaching from the bench really suits his coaching style. Now he has a strong caching team with him he is can focus on his strength which appears to be man management.

Bringing in Chocco and Yze seems to have made a huge difference to Goodwin. At the very least his manner and expression during press conferences has shifted, but that might be due to the fact we are winning.

The biggest difference seems to be game-day coaching. He trusts the players to steady when the opposition are on a run. But if we have a poor quarter (and we usually have 1 bad per game) those problems are resolved in the next game break.

I will admit I had him on thin ice, waiting for the first 8 rounds to see how we are playing, but I reckon that is fair enough considering our 2109 and 2020 seasons. But that ice is rock solid now.

I put most of it down to Choco. I think that he has got inside the heads of our players. Listen to them talk about his practices and you will see what I mean. He gives out weekly awards, regularly points things out to players and educates them and he is very encouraging.

Good win? Great win!!!!

the move to tag Libba was incredibly bold and shows a blueprint for other teams on how to beat the Dogs, awesome stuff

Just look at the bloody ladder folks. Who would have thought, top of the ladder, 3 games clear of Cats et al, 4 games clear of Swans etc and 5 bloody games clear of Giants and Tigers!

To quote the man (repeatedly) himself: "There's no question..."

Also a nod to Greg Stafford? From the Age article, the pre-season weekend on his farm, where he was the only coach present, was a key to the current mindset. Also regularly mentioned by the forwards.

The strength of relationship between Goodwin and the players is visible on the boundary, during breaks and after the game.

It is very moving at times to remember that most of them have been through at least a good dose of shared disappointment together and it hasn't divided them.

Having a couple of the game's best backline leaders - on top of being a couple of the game's best tall defenders - makes a huge difference, too. Contrast perhaps with Weitering who is just as good a defender but I wouldn't give any time to the idea of a swap for Lever or May.

The midfield seems to be embracing true collective leadership which is a monumental achievement.

Our forward line doesn't look like it has the same kind of decisive organisers and leaders at this stage but personally I rate Tom McDonald as a positive influence on the people around him and the humble, responsible collaboration of the likes of Nibbler and Spargo starts to look like leadership in it's own way.

Very impressive win.

My impression is Goody has certain strengths as a coach that come to the fore when he has the right mix around him. I believe he's a smart footy mind, relates well to the players and is a very balance and level headed manager of the group and the game plan. When he has a tactical thinker/innovator and a more 'fiery' type to compliment him it's the right mix. We had that with Jennings and McCartney and IMO it's no coincidence Goody (and the team) struggled when they both left. Richo seems similar to Goody from the outside, pretty calm and level, so didn't add much in terms of the total strengths of the coaching group, but then having Yze and Williams come in has brought back that combo that works.

Not trying to make it sound like all credit is to Choco and Ooze, but I think their strengths mean Goody's thrive.

No question a lot of the credit this season has to go to the coaching. Simon has developed in an amazing way and his support staff makes this a much more close knit unit that seems to trust each other and push for new ideas. A lot of us did finish the season last year wondering if he was the right man but a lot of us are happy to give credit where it’s due as well.

Would be keen to know how the match day coaching set up runs. With Goody on the bench who's calling the shots from the box?

I think Yze.

Gave 10 votes to the coaching staff in the Demonland poll.

The coaching dynamic has clearly changed. In years to come we may know why but in the meantime keep on with whatever they are doing.

TBH I was amazed that the Dogs with their supposedly brilliant and quick midfield played into our hands by going wide so often. They have obviously bought into the impassbale MFC backline wall story. On the other hand Adelaide never read the book.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

It’s late February. Two teams widely predicted to finish near the foot of the AFL table in 2026 face off against each other in sweltering 30-degree heat deep in outer suburbia in a match simulation with fresh new faces and uneven team numbers. There are no nearby sheep stations on offer; the result promises nothing more than bragging rights for the winner. Nevertheless, the loser appears hopelessly adrift, whereas the other seems to have found its footing after a couple of years of struggle – perhaps a hint at bigger things to come?
