Is it time for a woman to coach our AFLW team?

The women’s comp has proved to be a massive learning curve for everyone involved. Mick Stinnear, I believe, has a winning record in all of the 5 seasons he has coached. It could also be argued that he was the AFLW coach of the year last year given the draw we were given. From the outside looking in he seems to command great respect from his players

Aside from the optics of having a female coach are there any other reasons you’d like to change coaches?

You can listen on Spotify.

If you don't have Spotify, I recommend getting Spotify.

Cheers for the interesting interview, Kiran and Nita. Was struck by the lack of specifics in the answers, but I suppose that's the way it has to be. Can't be letting us into the nitty-gritty.

But in one case I thought the lack of detail was revealing. I drew the conclusion that we are nowhere when it comes to finding a home base....

except that she did say that we should be hearing on the government's decision "soon"

i know "soon" is rather indeterminate but it's certainly not years. i took it to mean this year

Could be in connection to the State Budget?

Yeah Budget drops were when they announced the 400million upgrades to Kadina park. Think this year will prob make it 37 billion upgrades for the cats.

I thought it was this year back at an AGM in 2019 dc. It’s now firmly in the i will believe it when I see it box.

Why is the podcast called “Deeluded”. Isn’t that a tad...negative?

PJ and Bartlett both said “soon” as well DC, I’m not holding my breath on it, it still feels years away.

What ever happened to the Sts Seaford base, can we take that over?

Agreed, from her answers it seemed as though they haven't even settled on a location yet! If Pert wants to hit the targets set by the board in regards to this they'd want to get a crack on.

Can't find it on Spotify is it supposed to be under the demonland podcast list?

Nevermind found it.

Sounds like the MGC precinct home base project is going nowhere fast. I hope we have contingency plans.

Might be a bit obvious. I think Demon supporters hope that the changeover was bloodless, but are certain it was significant. Can Kate assure us that it is not a sign of instability?

Did you listen to the Real Footy podcast this week? They mentioned that it was anything less than bloody. Apparently most wanted him gone.

The early wins cemented it as Bartlett had been gunning for Goodwin big time.

Really enjoy the podcast guys, particularly the guests interviews each week.

When listening to Roffey discuss the new home base, I definitely felt a change in sentiment compared to Bartlett's, and even Pert's interviews.

Roffey seemed a lot less confident that we would get a home base in the MCG vicinity, her comment was along the lines of "whatever the answer is from the Government, we just need that answer soon". Whereas Pert and Bartlett have been a lot stronger with their comments, in effect saying that we won't accept a home base anywhere other than the MCG precinct.

A bit frustrating that the dialogue appears to be changing after Pert and Bartlett have led us to believe we wouldn't be moving far.

Okee doke, seems I’m alone here. Really not a great name though, especially given the thousands of options.

It is not about optics. Though one person's optics is another person' leadership.

Obviously he had the talent and was appointed on merit, but the only reason Mick Stinear was in a position to land the dees AFLW seniour coach job is that there was a coaching pathway for him, the opportunity to gain experience and infrastructure to support his development as coach.  He captain-coached St Kilda City from 2012 to 2013, then coached Oakleigh Chargers for three years before being appointed the inaugural coach of our women's team.

I don't know Mick, but i reckon it is safe to assume he has aspirations to coach at AFL level. The AFLW job has provided him a pathway to say an assistant coach role, and perhaps ultimately a senior AFL coaching job.

It goes without saying that it is important that the pathways Mick Stinear benefited from also exist for women. And currently they don't.

And it goes without saying that both women and men's football will be much better for having women in coaching and development roles at all levels, from junior football, country footy, ammos etc. etc - and of course the AFLW and AFL.

Why? For the same reason the AFL works so hard to get kids to chose aussie rules over other sports, which in large part to increase the talent pool and by doing so increase the standard of the players playing at the elite level (and of course grow the game and supporter base).

By building the infrastructure and systems and developing pathways for women to coach at AFLW and AFL level you increase the pool of talented coaches and therefore the over all talent level of coaching.

And more women stay involved in the game because there is a pathway.

Think of someone like Daisy. I have no doubt she would be a brilliant coach. She is whip smart, has incredible understanding of the game and is a brilliant communicator. As it stands what is the pathway for Daisy to a senior AFLW coaching role - or senior AFL coach for that matter? It is crazy that we might lose her to the game for wont of a pathway. Or Paxy for instance.

I don't know how many women are assistant coaches in the AFLW. Not many i would think, and likely not one in AFL (Peta Searle was a development coach for the saints 2014-17, making her the AFL’s first full-time female assistant coach - and as far as i know the only one then or since).

Peta Searle is the only women senior AFLW coach after Bec Goddard resigned after two years and a flag at the Crows.

Surely no-one could argue that we need more women involved in coaching, particularly in the AFLW?

The demons and dogs were leaders in driving women's football to the establishment of the AFLW,  with our annual matches that started way back in 2013.

Appointing a woman to coach our AFLW team would be be natural extension of that leadership and particularly apt given we have the the first female president in our 165 year history.

And by the by there is no way Mick Stinear could be considered the coach of the year last year. Not making the grand final was a fail, pure and simple. His game plan, that worked great in the home and away season, broke down under the Crow's heat.

And to be honest he has escaped scrutiny. Given the talent we have had and the head start we had on the rest of the competition, to not have won a flag in five seasons is also a fail (noting of course 2020 was abandoned and we had made the GF).

Here are two interesting, relevant articles to the topic of pathways and women coaching in football:

Really good interview - great work Deeluded

I'm very impressed with Kate. She seems humble and very down to earth, but also strikes me as a very powerful presence with a clear set of credentials on display that bodes well for her success in the role.

Happy days

Hasn't been a lot to be positive about as a Melbourne supporter...

At the risk of derailing this thread further, I am involved with a junior team and only a small portion of the girls teams are currently coached by women. There are plenty of opportunities for women to be involved in coaching roles at our club, either as head coaches or assistants, but they are not volunteering for those roles. There are plenty of women involved in other roles (team managers, trainers, sales, etc), and we get great support at matches, but coaching roles don't seem to appeal.

I'm a big supporter of women's football, and it would be great to get greater female representation in our AFLW program, but I think we need to accept that some jobs simply don't appeal to some people as much as they do to others. You mentioned Daisy Pearce as an option. We would certainly want to keep Daisy at the club, but why would someone with two young children and a career want to take on a coaching role as well? I'm no great fan of Mick Stinear, but I'm certainly not forcing him out of a job just to get a less capable woman in the role because it looks good to outsiders.

  • FEATURE: 1925

A hundred years ago today, on 2 May 1925, Melbourne kicked off the new season with a 47 point victory over St Kilda to take top place on the VFL ladder after the opening round of the new season.  Top place was a relatively unknown position for the team then known as the “Fuchsias.” They had finished last in 1923 and rose by only one place in the following year although the final home and away round heralded a promise of things to come when they surprised the eventual premiers Essendon. That victory set the stage for more improvement and it came rapidly. In this series, I will tell the story of how the 1925 season unfolded for the Melbourne Football Club and how it made the VFL finals for the first time in a decade on the way to the ultimate triumph a year later.

  • PREVIEW: West Coast

Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

  • NON-MFC: Round 08

Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road. Saturday kicks off with a pivotal clash for both sides asthe Bulldogs look to solidify their top-eight spot, while Port seeks to shake their pretender tag. Then the Crows will be looking to steady their topsy turvy season against a resurgent Blues looking to make it 4 wins on the trot. On Election Night a Blockbuster will see the ladder-leading Pies take on the Cats, who are keen to bounce back after a narrow loss. On Sunday the Sydney Derby promises fireworks as the Giants aim to cement their top-eight status, while the Swans fight to keep their season alive. The Hawks, celebrating their centenary, will be looking to easily account for the Tigers who are desperate to halt their slide. The Round concludes on Sunday Night with a top end of the table QClash with significant ladder implications; both Queensland teams are in scintillating form. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • REPORT: Richmond

The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

  • CASEY: Richmond

The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace. They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
