Jackson is a better player than Weideman I think its as simple as that...not convinced about the Weid he will need to play very well in Adelaide to hold his spot

I tell ya what, the pressure is well and truly on Brayshaw. Needs to clean up his kicking asap.

Brayshaw has become a very important component in the team.

His kicking can be a little wayward at times, but he is Intercepting alot of traffic coming into our forward line.

If Weed plays well against the Crows it might be hard to drop him going forward, as he has had to wait for his opportunity again.

Injuries are part and parcel of the game and young Jacko might have to bide his time unfortunately.

This is professional football were talking about here not kids footy where young Jimmy gets injured and his old man cuts the oranges for the game and the coach is obliged to play him.

Just like Tmac had to during the off season. Tmac took his opportunity by the scruff of the neck and hasn't let go.

This is how it should always be, i can't remember a time where we have been flush with so much playing depth in multiple positions.

I agree. Gus intercepted about 4,000 kicks and 2,300 handballs - most of them on the wing I was on. Crazy good positioning and ball sense. Agree his kicking has become a bit 'loopy' and uncertain...

I don’t get the hate for weed in here. For his first game back in a long time I thought he held his own and did a number of really good things.

No one comes off an extended period on the sidelines and rips their first game apart. He’ll be better for the run and I still think he is about to surprise a lot of people.

I agree he's "defensive" wing position is one of our most important in the team. He's selfless attitude towards a team game represents and reflects the whole side in my opinion. Disposal, especially when not under pressure is frustrating though

 

As for the tall forwards McDonald has cedtinally thrown a spanner in the works. I think the plan pre season was Brown and Weideman key posts witj Jackson and Gawn rotating but McDonald is on fire... Weideman and Brown now fighting for the same spot.

next week is a straight shoot out between BB and Weid.

LJ is a better ruckman than both of them and offers more around the ground and say what you will in winter you can't play LJ and 3 other talls.

One of BB or Weid needs to kick goals and/or bring the small fowards into play. The other is out.

Perhaps in September there could be an argument for the extra tall but I doubt it.

In TMac's interview during the week, he made the interesting point that as a key forward, it takes weeks to get in to a rhythm with regards to marking. He reckons it's normal for contested marking players to mistime and two-grab at beginning of seasons and after returning from a layoff. He would know - he couldn't get in to that rhythm at all in 2019 or 2020.

I reckon this applicable to both Weideman and Brown at the moment. 8 rounds in before injury, Jackson hadn't either - he's less experienced so it will probably take longer, but I've no doubt it will come. Maybe we can't play with three talls in the forward line, but one thing I'm confident of is we'll never know how potent it could be unless we let it play out for a bit. TMac is the only one of the three that has found his rhythm. If one of Brown or Weideman can find theirs, we're going to be extremely difficult to stop. If both can, look out.

Probably - I suspect I might have been ruined by that exercise of watching all the centre bounces last week, where I didn't see him lay hand on the ball in a ruck contest once. Need to recalibrate my views once I see him play a full game again.

Responding to that no suggesting any thing about resting or moving players.

Angus  got the ball but was careless disposer of it at times.

Llve the zest he adds tonight defence around half back and gets the ball out of the area. Another team action like Spargs half back heroics yesterday in the outer side

This team grows before our eyes but must not be too unselfish at times when it's necessary to nail shots or handballs etc.

Jacko is and will be twice the footballer the weid is. Easy choice for me.

I suspect Brayshaw is being measured on KPIs around defence and selfless acts rather than polished ball use. We missed this badly in the North game where he didn't play on the wing; North used the inexperienced Baker's wing repeatedly on exit.

He needs to eliminate the unforced errors out of his game. The two OOFs in a row were particularly bad, but the fact that they kicked it straight down his throat three times in a row (couldn't quite hold the third mark) says something about him parking himself in the right places a lot. The errors are the difference between being a solid contributor and being really good, though. They're not going to get him dropped or moved to a different position.

Weid did not impress at all. For a bloke coming off much touted form at VFL level he was just average. And STILL 2 grabs almost every mark. Not good enough for a key forward. TMac has him well and truly covered.

Am I the only one who thinks we look heaps better with Harmes in the middle? I've been impressed with how much more dangerous he makes us look. With Viney and Oliver (and Jordon) beside him, we have the capacity for Trac to spend a bit more time across half forward. It's a nice mix.

I think Viney out has highlighted the importance of a good 4th string mid in Harmes. He'll prove even more valuable when Jack is back and we play deeper midfields like the dogs, too. 

Viney and Jackson are automatic ins if fit. 

Chandler was our 22nd player yesterday and a swap for Viney makes the most sense IMO. Harmes has been good the last two weeks and Jordon is playing well also. Brayshaw was great yesterday in the contest but very poor by foot. I think he is playing his role really well and is a key to our defensive structure, so I would be reluctant to drop him.

Weideman and Brown are competing for a spot IMO. Both have different strengths and I favour Weideman because he is more mobile and better at competing when the delivery is not good. I think Weideman was better than Brown yesterday but neither was great. 

Melksham will need to go back to the VFL to earn his spot back. He cannot be sub twice in a row.

Where's that "Why can't we have both" gif. Gus is doing his job well but tidy up his disposal and he'd be doing it very bloody well.

Brayshaws kicking was horrible in the 1st qtr but I thought he was excellent after that.  He is playing the wing role exceptionally well.

Don’t get me wrong, his intercepting was sensational along the wing but turned it over straight after. Hopefully he can improve his kicking and it’ll be the icing on the cake for him. Do rate him just not his kicking haha!

That said, I reckon Chandler was stuck in the no mans land pocket a bit which meant Pickett, ANB and Spargo all got more involved up the ground. None of them had big disposal games because we didn’t move the ball well but they were fresh and pressuring. We kept the balance of 3 talls and 3 smalls.

His holding the ball was a bit unlucky, he bounced out of the pack nicely but ran in to a good tackle. And his 50 was rubbish. Saad was in the protected area and mucking around to draw a free. The correct umpiring is to reset the mark and remove Saad from the 5m area or just ignore it. Our players adapted afterwards and bullocked Saad away from the mark to prevent a similar incident. 

The metres gained doesn’t mean anything either. His backwards handball cost a few metres and led to a Spargo goal, and otherwise we probably need forwards willing to share it sideways and backwards more often. We’re still too direct to goal.

I may be having another senior "moment"- but do others see the potential for Jackson during some game time to play as our centre (even whilst Gawn is rucking)  with maybe Viney and Oliver alternating time on the wing (opposite to Langdon).  I like his distribution skills in getting the ball and feeding it out to others and might be a hard match up for some opponents with his height as well. It might also free up Viney from being crash tackled so much and take some pressure off Oliver being bashed and tagged so often. 

Just a thought to vary things as an option. I wouldn't mind it being experimented with anyway.

Someone on here said last week we do need to have Plan B , Plan C and I would add Plan D as other teams start to work us out - so varying things and changing things up might at least offer us options and build flexibility in the players.

It rained at the half time break after TMac had taken that mark, which was in the 2nd. Weid's uncontested effort that went between his hands was early in the 4th when it had just stopped raining.

Yes, we're missing out playing Jackson, Salem, Rivers in the midfield in very short bursts. I understand it's easier said than done tho as you need to temporarily restructure.

Its getting hard and that is great for the team.  I'd give Chandler another week, as he didn't adjust to the pace compared to others, but when was his last AFL game?

Weid, what I saw on TV I liked, but its a limited view of his game.  He' coming from being the key fwd in the VFL to fit into a different system, that would take time, they need to play togethor more.  The wet didn't help, but his 2nd efforts were good.

i was the first one on demonland to say that Brayshaw needed to be dropped (got criticised for it too) and nothing has changed. Absolutely horrendous by foot and offers nothing defensively. 

Chandler has to go. You can't have a guy have 1 kick in 2 hours of football and maintain this loyalty of earning your spot. No free rides!
