We won and beat a team we needed to if we are to make finals which is great but boy do we still have some worries.

We are missing Brown, Hibberd, Weid, Viney and Lockhart from this line up to be fair. Boy do we need another outside mid to take away Harmes spot though.

Literally no team will be playing their best footy this weekend. Suck it up, enjoy the win and let's hope for a good season!

Lever has improved out of site. I was his biggest critic but he's really come on

He’ll be really happy to read this.

TMac is back!  Well done Tommy!

A R1 win is important.  But what's with Max? His hitouts are usually to our disadvantage.

Some familiar issues but I only recall one or two bombs into the forward line all day.

The weekend is always better with a win. For those constantly knocking Spargo just have a look at his game today.

The aim is to win a flag. On that evidence we are a gazillion miles away from it. So yeah, that’s disappointing.

It’s cool that you’re entirely satisfied with 4 points at home against a half strength Dockers. Others look at the bigger picture.

You don't need to be playing champagne footy in Round 1 to win a flag. You just need to bank points.

I'm sure we'll lose games this year. Some games will be more frustrating than others. But I prefer to live in the present. We won a game of footy. I genuinely feel sorry for those who can't savour that.

Lever, May and TMac’s agility all positives. Our defensive unit are tight. The win is the biggest positive given we didn’t gel for large parts of the game.

My biggest concerns:

- the last kick into the forward line. We really butchered it a lot. We’ve had 4 years to work on it and it’s still deplorable. Watch the last quarter and we had 4 absolute shockers.

- Our clearance work. We are making a habit of getting overworked in there, which is concerning given our list profile includes virtually no outside mids.

- Harmes, Jones and Sparrow are concerns for different reasons.

His taps have been quite poor for a while now, his strength is his intercepting ability around the ground which wasn't on show today

You start to wonder if the midfield will ever learn their lesson in regards to clearances and getting sucked into the play.  You've got to assume nobody is teaching them any different, that was a pathetic day at the office in terms of clearance play.

Or you've got to assume that they're incapable of doing any better/different. They've had a succession of perfectly good midfield coaches, now one of the best in the business in Yze - yet we're still seeing the same thing.

I understand why a lot of people are dissapointed from todays showing. But the way to look at it, we won and there were probably about 16 or more players who played no where near their best.

Fix the connection between Max and the midfield group, fix the goal kicking, get back some key forwards, gradual improvement from the kids. Need to be playing well in the back half of the season not the first.

Might want to watch the mid section of the last quarter. We had some shockers.

Got the job done. Will benefit from Viney, Weid, Ben Brown etc being back. Might expect Brayshaw to improve in the coming weeks given his impacted preseason.

Spargo was good to see today. Jordon very solid debut.

I thought Brayshaw did some clever work on the opposition, screening and finding space. A few more games and his game may well return to its best. His disposal could be sharpened - slightly out of touch at times - but overall, a player with some experience, judgment and intent.

We’re also over 6 months out from the gF..$

Lack of a proper series of competitive matches shows (for most clubs).  Some really good patches broken by poor skills and extremely poor finishing in front of goal.

As they say, we'll be better for the run, build confidence in each other that comes from a win.

The constant pressure in the 4th was great to see and a change from the lats few years.

True but it's going to take a while for people to feel safe and you cannot blame them.

I agree entirely. Membership will rise with wins. Today was ugly but the job was done.
lots to work on next week

The performance of Harmes is a massive concern. Hasn't played well since five-year contract.

Jetty and Jones did OK.

Rivers was awful. Jackson's kicking terrible.

Spargo, Kozzie, ANB put plenty of forward pressure on.

TMac good.

Brayshaw ineffectual.

Hunt hopeless.

Tomlinson fine with May and Lever.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.

  • CASEY: Box Hill

The Casey Demons ended the regular season on a positive note and gained substantial momentum leading into the finals when they knocked the Box Hill Hawks off the top of the VFL ladder in their final round clash at Casey Fields. More importantly, they moved out of a wild card position in the finals race and secured a week's rest as they leapfrogged up the ladder into fifth place with their decisive 23-point victory over the team that had been the dominant force in the competition for most of the season.
