I’m a bit confused. Don’t the new draft rules still mean we would have access to Mac Andrew just means we won’t get the discount that we would have got had he been in last years draft? I prob wrong but I thought that’s how it worked

We won't get access if another club selects him in the first 20 picks, otherwise I think we still get the discount

If a rival club bid on him with a pick within the top 20 then they will get him. We will have no option to match the bid.

If a bid comes between 20-40 then the normal rules apply and we can use points to match (not sure if the discount is still applied).

And from next year’s Draft I believe it increases to Pick 40. In other words, if a Club uses a Pick between 1 & 40, the Academy Club can’t match it.

The only thing I’m not sure about is whether these new rules apply to all the Clubs in the development States of NSW & Qld???

We selected Jackson with pick 3, who was mostly a ruckman, had played a little bit forward in the second half of his draft year, who we thought could develop his forward craft at the top level.

If the attributes are tantalising enough, clubs will pull the trigger almost anywhere in the first round.

As others have said, it remains to be seen whether Andrews has those attributes.

The rules will only apply to NGA academy picks. Its a complicated issue. The northern state academys have been in place for ages now and the clubs pump considerable amount of cash into them.

This was rightly deemed unfair to the other clubs and therefore the NGA zones were setup to make it fairer. The only thing is that the clubs didnt actually pump money into the zones. Therefore, the Bulldogs picked up the best kid in the draft in JUH just because he happened to live in their zone and have at least one parent who wasn't born in Aus.

Our first pick seems possible to be right around where Andrew will be selected anyway.

Correction:

Our first pick seems to be right around the number of points required for Andrew if he is selected in the early 20s.

Sums up the NGA's.  The big difference from the Northern states had access to every kid in their zone, the other states only had access to kids with 1 parent born overseas and indigenous players.

I think the Northern states still get priority access to all kids in their academy this year.

isn't our first pick, at this stage, in the mid-30s?

If we get the bid in the 20's for him you get the discount so as it stands know pick 34 might be enough points to cover him

It makes you think are the acadamy's worth it if you can only pick the bottom of the barrel.

Concussed and will miss this weekend’s trial games as well. Wishing him good luck for a speedy recovery.

Do we assume that young Riak is also in the Melbourne NGA?

I presume that would be the case.

I'm forecasting a backline of Pfrengle Puncher Rogers.

The Mac Andrew decision might sting, but I think the scaling back of NGAs is actually good for us, even if Andrew has a younger brother coming through. Other clubs were poised to really take advantage of the NGA setup where we haven’t invested anywhere near the same resources. Those clubs will still get some sort of payoff, but it is lessened and we are better placed for it.

Do we know anything about Andy Moniz-Wakefield?

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

  • POSTGAME: Carlton

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
