He’s had his payday and would be aware of that, we’ve had years to plan Oliver and Petracca.

Was contracted until the end of 2022 so it is a 2 year extension.

The 2 years suggests salary cap management is part of the rationale for extending.

Hope he can find his AA form again or at least make it into the top 5 of the B n F.

club would be pleased* to some extent that they haven't had to pay out on some of the bonuses he would have had in initial deal around BnF/AA but at the same time probably would have liked him to have hit them coz that means it was a good signing.

That'd be certainly part of it, the guys only 24 (turning 25 shortly) but is known as a real mature leader so I'm sure he'll be doing what he can to keep our best players alongside him.

Having a good game last Friday probably game him a little bit extra leverage.

A little extra LEVERage, huh?  Very droll, Mr ET!

The website says "another three seasons" though?

Anyway, I look forward to another 3-4 years of Lever being criticised, sometimes fairly, often not.

I'm pretty sure he signed a 5 year deal to joint the club ie till end of 2022.

'Another three seasons' would included the remaining year of his current contract being 2022.

was going to raise a thread about leveraging Lever but this is as good as any.

We have to get a tactic going that takes advantage of the intercept. By himself his disposal is suspect but the time when he takes the ball is when the other team is committed to attack and are at their most vulnerable.

Perhaps there needs to be a plan allowing him to lay off the ball quickly to a designated player or spot

He will be like Trac if he can play like last Friday, free from criticism and an A grader leading this Club. Has enormous leadership potential.

Really don't know why Jake,  Maysie Trac Gus Langers and Clarry aren't in the leadership group to keep them all together . They deserve it.

Well done Jake onwards and upwards.

Good signing.

His disposal is far from elite but he’s one of the best players in the league in knowing where to position himself to take the intercept mark.

He’ll be important this year in the dying minutes of close games.

Part of the other side benifit of this is that if we can rely on Lever and May to take more intercept marks and rebound out of the backline, it should also free up big Maxy to get involved and take marks further up the ground in our attacking half.

If we get a full season out of Jake, playing to his capabilities, we will push for Top 4. When Jake Fires the Defence is working.
he is a barometer

He has to play a good season

I assume a pay cut was part of this deal? Surely can’t be on $700-$800k a season still?

maybe not a cut but definitely front loaded i'd imagine given the OOC players in the future they'd be absorbing more now while clarry/trac/salo and the younger boys are on smaller deals

Great to have Lever signed after a good season in 2020 where he played every game, so looks like his knee is holding up well.

It's a confidence booster knowing he'll be there until the end of 2024. He is still young and already a leader and well respected at the club.

 Best of luck Jake!

    HIGHLIGHTS/LOWLIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Melbourne traveled across the continent to take on the Fremantle Dockers in sweltering conditions at Mandurah south of Perth in a game that delivered the club both its highlight and its lowlight in the first minute.  But first, let’s start by doing away with the usual cliches used in connection with the game. It was just a practice match and the result didn’t matter. Bad kicking is bad football. The game was played in severe heat, the swirly breeze played havoc with both teams resulting in

A couple of Demonland Trackwatchers headed down to Gosch's Paddock to bring you their observations from today's training session before the Demons head off to Perth for their final Practice Match. KEV MARTIN'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Beautiful morning, not much wind, more than a couple of dozen spectators.  The players were up and about, boisterous and having fun. THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
