I was originally underwhelmed with this pick, maybe because of Bowey’s size, or lack there of.

At a different level of footy, but his awareness, decision making and execution is already in front of most of our regulars. These attributes are the hardest to improve.

A definite ‘needs’ pick. I’m converted.

Most if those attributes are born in players and are hard to msnufacture hence skills break down under pressure.

Yhe best players are instinctive watch Trac it's so natural.

Thatsxwhat these 3 players bring on top of Kossie Jacko and Riv all being the same.

Thsts why I am so bullish about our chances this year !

each to their own. I don't look at games played as a measuring stick as jack watts was gifted half of his games. much like omac was. that cant even be argued. Watts was just the recipient of melbourne turning over many coaches who wanted a crack at getting the best out of him. I'm tired of being right with Watts.  What happened to all those demonlanders that said 'we will rue the day we let watts go'?  where are they? I laughed at them then and was once again right.

Can anyone actually honestly say that watts was better than luke tapscott?

Yes quite categorically look at his record You  have Stubbornly tried to masssge stats by blaming selection, to try and prove your point and by saying you don't look at no's of games!!

Bit like saying  racehorse who won 30 races is only better because he was gifted more wins than a horse that won 3 races.

Bradmsns better than Ian Craig??? Maybe Becsuse  he was gifted about 25 centuries !!!

He has a great step on him which he showed in that 3rd period off half back, really composed, outstanding user by foot as he showed in the 3rd period kicking to a target on the back of the square with the outside of his right boot.  Will be a player from the look of him, definitely the Dees highlight of the magoos hit out.

Along with Petty's  comeback to footy.

I was really impressed with Jake's first hit out, has a real nice action and didn't miss too many targets by foot. Seems to want to kick it too which was pleasing. Hope he gets a chance in our next game.

Guy moves like he knows how good he is, no indecision or hesitancy

He will force Tomlinson out of the team soon which would be a huge plus for us.

Play him - I don’t care who misses as a result. So much time and skill. Most exciting thing about the day IMO.

He was terrific I thought - very confident ball use and smarts. He came to the MFC as a winger. I'd have him there ahead of Baker.

Amazing drafting by the Demons.

This kids will be a gun on HB. Should be in 22 for round 1. Speed and kicking skills desperately needed down back

Would love to know how this bloke has been tracking since the Doggies game. I think if Hunt continues to lack impact then this is the spot he could be eying off

He should be in the team now.  Already 10 times the player Hunt is.

Might be more a question of fitness than talent.

It's not something I've seen mentioned elsewhere, but one impact of reducing rotations is that first year players may be less likely to be given games, especially early in the season, due to their relative lack of fitness.

Fitness, match fitness - these new draftees haven't played a consistent block of footy for 18 months, then there's a matter of throwing in a tiny defender right away before he's really proven himself at VFL level. It's a lot to ask.

As far as I can tell 6 Victorian first year kids made their debuts on the weekend. Berry,  Sharp, Bruhn, Cox, Henry, Lazzaro (sub). 5 of those are country kids who likely had less strict lockdowns last year as well. That's probably not a coincidence.

Jake will get his chance soon enough

If not this week then it will not be that long - I have now seen enough to realise why he was picked up with our first pick

Speed, great delivery by foot, good evasive skills and awareness - overall a neat package. Time will tell but if he keeps training well , playing well for Casey and a few injuries happen he will get his chance

Hopefully he makes the most of it and cements a place in the team because we certainly could use more people who can choose the best option and hit targets consistently

On fitness, I heard Luke Beveridge on radio the other day and he believes the new VFL rule for 2021 isn’t giving young developing players the running levels that are required for AFL.

Apparently the new rule has been implemented in VFL practice games and it’s the first time I’ve heard about it where each team is required to have 3 players stationed inside 50 during boundary throw-ins and kick-ins to reduce congestion. Problem was it caused too many delays as teams had to wait up to 20 seconds each time until those 6 required players retreated back inside 50.

This could be another reason why new draftees might have to wait a while before a game. Bowey might play soon or he might not but there’s already a couple of AFL coaches not too pleased with the new rule.

Just quietly putting together a pretty good start to his VFL career.

Currently averaging 24 disposals in all 3 games he's played so far.

takes all the kick-ins tho, so that number is distorted

he's a good kick which is a massive plus, looks composed with the ball in hand, tackles hard

there's a lot to like

If people are wondering where improvement can come from in our 6-0 start look no further than the laser kicking and decision making of  Jake Bowey.  A player like that can help take us to another level.

You're not the only one that looks like a goose in this thread, but you do seem to enjoy playing the role generally.

This one too.

Can you imagine if he was 10 times the player Hunt is. 5000 metres gained every week.

Tough to do.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Richmond

Round four kicks off early Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields, as the mighty Narrm host the winless Richmond Tigers in the second week of Indigenous Round celebrations. With ideal footy conditions forecast—20 degrees, overcast skies, and a gentle breeze — expect a fast-paced contest. Narrm enters with momentum and a dangerous forward line, while Richmond is still searching for its first win. With key injuries on both sides and pride on the line, this clash promises plenty.

  • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.

  • CASEY: Williamstown

The Casey Demons issued a strong statement to the remaining teams in the VFL race with a thumping 76-point victory in their Elimination Final against Williamstown. This was the sixth consecutive win for the Demons, who stormed into the finals from a long way back with scalps including two of the teams still in flag contention. Senior Coach Taylor Whitford would have been delighted with the manner in which his team opened its finals campaign with high impact after securing the lead early in the game when Jai Culley delivered a precise pass to a lead from Noah Yze, who scored his first of seven straight goals for the day. Yze kicked his second on the quarter time siren, by which time the Demons were already in control. The youngster repeated the dose in the second term as the Seagulls were reduced to mere

Narrm time isn’t a standard concept—it’s the time within the traditional lands of Narrm, the Woiwurrung name for Melbourne. Indigenous Round runs for rounds 3 and 4 and is a powerful platform to recognise the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in sport, community, and Australian culture. This week, suburban footy returns to the infamous Victoria Park as the mighty Narrm take on the Collingwood Magpies at 1:05pm Narrm time, Sunday 31 August. Come along if you can.

  • AFLW REPORT: St. Kilda

The Dees demolished the Saints in a comprehensive 74-pointshellacking.  We filled our boots with percentage — now a whopping 520.7% — and sit atop the AFLW ladder. Melbourne’s game plan is on fire, and the competition is officially on notice.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.
