Really good appointment, with such a wealth of young talent, he will  be a great fit , he has a great footy mind and great footy person.

Great appointment.

I like this. If Goody falls on his sword we have a natural back up; sort of a reverse succession plan.

Don’t mind it. Reeeeeeally don’t mind it!

Good to see the club on the front foot and reckon Choco will be give great guidance to some of our leaders as well as youngsters.

Welcome!

Very very good get, success has followed him everywhere he has been.  Great backboard for goody and apparently is on of the best at getting talent out of individuals especially in young kids.  Not his role but hope he still has a bit to do with the playing group!

Can someone explain why everyone is so excited. Do any of you actually know what he brings?

AFL premiership coach at Port and key in developing Richmond into a premiership dynasty. Helped develop Dusty into a star and Cotchin from worst captain in the league to 3 time premiership captain? Nah his CV is rubbish ;)

Maybe you can start by enlightening us all of what he 'doesn't' bring.

The only thing missing now is to see the coaching set up to work to a common goal for the good of the Club and to get the glory of a first premiership in six decades. mark williams may prove to be the best appointement of them all.

I wasn’t criticising the appointment at all just looking for some detail but I guess it’s fairly obvious

I think even Kane Cornes will like this appointment....not that we need to pass the Kane test but he is a big wrap for Williams.

Best news of the season so far. Great get, he knows his stuff inside and out.

Good insurance too if Goodwin doesn’t perform again next season. Would be happy to see him in the top job if the opportunity arises.

Have you forgotten Yze? I sure he has come on board with the view to coach us in a year or two.

This is a very, very good get by the club.

Well done Pert and co.

We have a former premiership coach coming in as an assistant coach specialised the area where he has perhaps even better reputation than as a head coach?

Well, I'll be darned.

Burgess, Yze, Williams...  we are not messing around when it comes to securing footy department people to fill specific identified needs.

Is his nickname still Choco and is that in anyway referencing his complexion?

Just a straight answer here please. I don't want to derail the bloody thread..

No mate but Williams is a premiership winning coach and a good track record m developing players.

Cant beat that.

I like Yze but I really am not in favour of another rookie coach.

Both great appointments but Williams has more runs on the board. If i had to choose between the 2 i'd choose Chocco.

As I heard from the horses mouth, Chocco came asking for a job in 2019 and was knocked back. Good to have him where he clearly wants to be.

Given how bad our player development has been this is a great appointment imo.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

Hands up if you thought, like me, at half-time in yesterday’s game at TIO Traeger Park, Alice Springs that Melbourne’s disposal around the ground and, in particular, its kicking inaccuracy in front of the goals couldn’t get any worse. Well, it did. And what’s even more damning for the Melbourne Football Club is that the game against St Kilda and its resurgence from the bottomless pit of its miserable start to the season wasn’t just lost through poor conversion for goal but rather in the 15 minutes when the entire team went into a slumber and was mugged by the out-of-form Saints. Their six goals two behinds (one goal less than the Demons managed for the whole game) weaved a path of destruction from which they were unable to recover. Ross Lyon’s astute use of pressure to contain the situation once they had asserted their grip on the game, and Melbourne’s self-destructive wastefulness, assured that outcome. The old adage about the insanity of repeatedly doing something and expecting a different result, was out there. Two years ago, the score line in Melbourne’s loss to the Giants at this same ground was 5 goals 15 behinds - a ratio of one goal per four scoring shots - was perfectly replicated with yesterday’s 7 goals 21 behinds.
This has been going on for a while and opens up a number of questions. I’ll put forward a few that come to mind from this performance. The obvious first question is whether the club can find a suitable coach to instruct players on proper kicking techniques or is this a skill that can no longer be developed at this stage of the development of our playing group? Another concern is the team's ability to counter an opponent's dominance during a run on as exemplified by the Saints in the first quarter. Did the Demons underestimate their opponents, considering St Kilda's goals during this period were scored by relatively unknown forwards? Furthermore, given the modest attendance of 6,721 at TIO Traeger Park and the team's poor past performances at this venue, is it prudent to prioritize financial gain over potentially sacrificing valuable premiership points by relinquishing home ground advantage, notwithstanding the cultural significance of the team's connection to the Red Centre?
