A significant set of the Demonland community was dead against drafting him this time last year and now a similarly significant set are complaining that the contract extension is not long enough.

The norm for recruits is a two year extension on their opening two years.

One year extension is definitely an oddity. Money wise for the club it will cost more as well if he is successful.

Sure you can spin it on so many grounds but it remains an outlier.

It might be unusual, but we're living in unusual times. For example, the salary cap and player contracts are being cut next year. When has that ever happened before (apart from this year)? It may be a one year extension to allow both the club and the player to get a better appreciation of options when more is known about the future football economy next year.

Btw have we had 3 better youngsters than LJ, Rivers and Pickett? I can’t recall. Exciting times ahead imv.

Green, Wheatley, Whelan, Bruce - 1999 Draft maybe? I hope to be proven very wrong ;)

Only one year added to current deal. Would have liked at least double that. Happy though. The guy did some insane things in his first year and you can see he was one of the most popular guys at the hub based on player IG stories and the social media releases over the journey.

I agree but he would be backing himself in to be worth decent coin by end of 2022. Why sign now on minimal coin when he could double it in 2 years?

Although Bruce, Green and Wrecker were better players than Paul I thought we looked a better footy team when Wheatley was In the team. Loved his run and long kicking.

he's a draftee on base money.

Chalk and cheese

The standard extension for any half decent draftee is two further years.

4 years for T Mac was fine and we got stung. Five years for Viney ???

Why chalk and cheese?

Are you suggesting we should be offering him 2-3 years more on his current base money? Why would he sign that?

He's signing up to the end of his third year. If he lives up to the promise he's shown in 2020, he'll be asking for a bigger contract. Fair enough.

Great take out.

H, I say it a bit on here but I'm really into NHL, ice hockey, and player movement is almost universally based on the assets worth at that point in time for the coming season/contract period.

Example the captain of the St Louis Blues, who helped win them a Stanley Cup just last season, is now on the Vegas Golden Knights. He wanted to stay but couldnt get the offer he wanted, they brought in a replacement player half way through the season and gave him a new contract. Captain leaves via free agency.

A fall out of that was Vegas signed the ex Blues player to a huge 8 year contract, so they had to ship out one of there current best defenders for peanuts via trade to a different team. He was happy and settled and playing well for Vegas the last couple of seasons, while under contract.

The NHL players now, the top 1/4 or so, are all looking to add no trade or no movement clauses into contracts where they can't be moved or they can provide a limited list of say 10 team they can't be traded to.

Red Wings and Devils fan here.

Luke hopefully we can start playing like the team we can be and convince you to a bigger contract in the future. Good on him for signing a small extension.

+ 1 Year

Keeping his options open, has no currency yet.

Hard to get a clear read on the media marketplace, as the past year has seen the emergence of more aggregation streaming platforms (Netflix, Stan, Apple, etc...) all looking to competing with Foxtel for subscribers, and Aussie Rules demands a premium in this context as it brings with it a very large and dedicated subscriber base. I.e. it's bankable.

I think this is of particular interest.

Most of these streaming services are international with large equity backing. They are buying market share and killing local "tv channels".

Coming after big sport contracts is one of their next steps. Consumption of sport via streaming is becoming more common.

This means that even though the Aussie economy may stagnant, there may be a premium to be paid for media if a competitor decided they wanted to kill off foxtel.

One of the biggest intrigues for 2021 is how we use Jackson. Obviously he will play as the second fiddle in the ruck for 15-20% of game time. With Ben Brown and Weideman in the forward line, do we go with three towers for 40-50% of the game? This would be against the modern trend but could work in perfect conditions. Does Jackson play as a tall midfielder or wingman? Goodwin will have to experiment early in the year to see what works.

I can see Jackson making a big jump next year and he will quickly become an elite player if he can master his overhead marking.

Well done Dees.

Well done Luke 'Flighty' Jackson.

Happy to take the 1 year. Play finals and he'll stay longer.

One year is better than nothing, his manager might be banking on him hitting his straps during his third year to get a big fat long term contract.

Interesting times economically. Normally, I'll predict anything except the future, but in this case I'll make an exception to my exception:

The neo-liberal era will end in with a great deleveraging, triggered by events undeniably attributable to the effects of anthropomorphic climate change. I'd take a bet that a bunch of big insurance companies, and the reinsurers, go broke from the cumulative disasters..... and take out the banks as they go.

I reckon AF might think the above was plausible, but the question of when is the really salient one: I think the neo-liberal bubble has one more great big blow to go. As we come out of Covid, the world will boom 4-5 years and then BOOM! After that it's a depression, realignment and restructuring, and a low growth future (which I'm fine with). I expect AF won't agree with that timing, but I'm interested to knock the idea around.

I have lots to say about this. Maybe it's a topic for General Discussion. ?

It's great news.

I wonder whether those who wish it was a longer contract also bemoan the TMac contract?

I don't like the contract because I'd prefer we had more money to offer Oliver and Petracca, but it's not really apples for apples.

I rated Tom's 2018 season and a bit of his 2017 season, but outside of that, I've not rated him as a player and I think our soft cap would be better without, but for 2021 he's a Melbourne player, so I hope he can prove me wrong and find another role.

Giving Jackson two years extra years versus one (so into his fourth AFL season instead of only his third), is not the same as giving Tom a 5 year deal. That said, I didn't have a problem with Tom's deal at the time.

What does “Dogga” refer to?

Jones gave that nickname to Jackson because he thought he looked like a King Cavalier dog.

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
