Great player, and one of those really popular supporter favourites, I remember when he was traded to Collingwood, I was angry and couldn't understand the logic, one of the poorest decisions by the club, along with the early retirement of Junior. I sometimes think this is why we lack the solidarity of other clubs, because at times we have got it wrong with our champions.

Woewodin  wins a Brownlow  in 2000 and then down the track in 2003 he is virtually handballed to Coll/wood .because he was underperforming. The club said  he hadn't reached the heights of his Brownlow year. That is a fact and it was poor judgment by the FD.

It was so sickening to watch him play for the filth.  That is the way we treat our champions

I remember that night. I was working in a restaurant at the time and as I walked in everybody was talking about who would win. 

When asked, I said that Woewoden had played well all year and was a chance. I was laughed at by the whole group, but I used to watch a hell of a lot of footy back in those days and really did think he was a chance. He never played very well after that year so many people still think it was a fluke.

 

Woewodin accelerated my hair loss by a few years. Own up people, who else bleached their hair that year?  #22

My recollection (somewhat hazy) is that Woewodin was on massive pay after his brownlow win and we were struggling with the cap. His form wasn't that great either....

He loved the club and was prepared to take a massive pay cut to stay

Daniher didn't want him - simples

His trade ripped the culture out of the club

We have a modern day test on the horizon - will Goodwin disregard Nathan Jones?

The Woey article reminds me of another MFC Brownlow winner, Willo, aka Brian Wilson. The only player to have won the Brownlow Medal at his third club and that at the age of twenty! 1982 was his first season at the Demons and he nailed it. I was fortunate enough to see both of them run the G ragged on numerous occasions. Scott West may have been a bit stiff but that's the Charlie and both Woey and Willo deserved their gongs.

The form was good enough, 3 less pos a game in 2002  better than 2001 however he won a Brownlow and helped us into a GF. in 2000 the CLUB had a good year.. . 

Maybe your right your recollection is somewhat hazy.

It’s a sliding doors moment, if the umpires had have noticed the other Melbourne players that had played better against West Coast and Scott West (more deservedly IMO) won the Brownlow how would his career have gone? 

He really did have a cracker of a year, was it Brownlow deserving? Perhaps not, but it was crucial to our GF push. 

I didn’t like the way we traded him out, definitely could have been handled better.

Hardly the same thing.

If Jones was not to have his contract renewed for one more year, then I think it would fair enough.  He isn't contributing as much as he used to and his body isn't what it was either.  However, I'm not against a one year deal.

But that is vastly different to trading Woewodin, who was on huge coin, to the Pies when he still had plenty left in the tank.  His two years after the Brownlow were average, but we were spooked by the WA sides and panicked (as we do) and overpaid.  It was our own fault in that regard.

His year in 2000 was superb, though, and he was a massive reason why we made the Grand Final.  What I'd give to see us do that now.

He was traded out on the guise that he was ‘too expensive’ - Daniher wanted him out

I didn't say it was all about the coin, just that the correlation you make between Woewodin getting traded and Jones potentially not getting another year at the age of 33 are different things.

IT was the Gutnick years and I seem to remember, correct me ion I am wrong, that free came knocking and made a big offer. Joes ego kicked in and matched the deal which in retrospect was overs for a one off season. That Woey was willing to take a pay cut suggests he knew he was over priced but then we not only shipped him off we were still paying a large portion of his salary. Who was running the club then???

My friend cried for a week and skipped school when they traded him. Such was the devastation of him leaving. 
Was my neighbour when he played in Melbourne. Really nice humble guy. Never really gave you the impression that he thought too much of himself. 

Woewy had an extremely good year.  He earned his medal, and if Neale drifts away over the next couple of years and is delisted he will still have earned his. 
 

Still a bit gutted remembering the trade news, my sister was devastated!

My good mate and I went to the first practice match that year which as I recall was at Optus Oval against Carlton. Woewodin was miles ahead of anyone else on the ground - had about 35 touches. Old mate went and plonked $20 on him for the Brownlow the next day at $401. I stupidly didn’t.

It baffles me when people say Woewodin didn't deserve a Brownlow because he did not have a great career.

The Brownlow is not a lifetime achievement award, it's about how good you were in a given season.

Woewodin had a great year in 2000, and even if he didn't get a vote in the final round he still would have won (tied with West).
