If we had of picked him he would have gone to GWS instead of Scully, there is no way known he would have stayed around in the basket case that was the Melbourne Football Club of the time...

As for Danger...the danger signs for him were there in the Prelim.

That fake stony faced look after the game instead of joining in the joy of winning, of getting through to the GF.

The all about me moment...

It was nearly like the classic Crow's fake power stance.

...and he got the same result.

He played as if it was all about him.

There was no team in Dangerfield.

Dangerfield is still a superstar. Just had an off second half. Max gawn went completely missing in a prelim and he's still a superstar

Everything you post is hindsight.  There’s some wriggle room with Trengove, but Scully was a lock on par with Walsh and Rowell in his draft year.

Good on Richmond and good on Martin for the way things have turned out, but if they had pick 1, they 100% would have taken Scully.

 

The only question about draft order that I can remember was actually the MFC saying if we only had one pick it would have been difficult to choose between Scully and Trengove (ie it mjght not have been Scully), but that Scully got the no.1 on the night because of his body of work over the previous 2 years.

Scully was the obvious no.1 pick in footy ability and his pure elite athletic endurance.  ????
 

But we failed to pick up in his character flaw of pure selfishness and drive for a $$$$. ❌❌

Trengove came up from a mid-teens pick to no.2 and rightly so as he had so much class and such an impressive young man. ??
His injury killed off a wonderful young blokes career.  ❌Another curse. 

Martin was going to be a 20-25 pick but his 2009 year was simply amazing and the Tigers took the gamble in pick 3.  His talent was there but his off field attitude was a high risk.  High risk but he has been high high high return.

Here's two unpopular opinions:

I like Dangerfield.  He's a great player, great to watch and he gives his all.

I don't blame Scully for going to GWS.  We were a disaster area and the offer was just too big to refuse.  He would have been mad not to take it.  I don't buy the "lying to big Jimma on his deathbed" lament either, Scully was in a no win situation there.

Scully did not leave because we were a disaster, we where on the up after his second year, he went for money pure and simple, and in hindsight it's money that he would never have reached, if you look at his career. He was never a great footballer, he just could run, which is rated too highly by AFL recruiters.

He is a bloody good player no doubt about that. 
I think he’s just missed his window with Geelong, they just look like the ageing curve has finally hit this group, maybe Cameron will change that.

Excellent player, at very least can say he played in the last day. Never saw RDB play but from everything I've ever read and heard he seems like the closest thing to a comparison (more than happy to be corrected). Gut feel is he doesn't get another shot at it.

RDB did it in finals and was a true leader.

Danger is a great player but has been overwhelmed by the occasion...

There are times when you need to do the ordinary rather than the spectacular that will come...

An unpopular opinion maybe, but I think he’s slightly overrated, went at 62% disposal efficiency this year(before GF), just bombs the ball long a lot and plays for frees. ??‍♂️ He is dangerous up forward though.

Yeah, maybe but given that our injury management (up until this year) has been so poor that He would be long forgotten.

Nobody would even know of him.

Having seen him play, I would really compare RDB with Martin as a player, not Dangerfield

Appreciate the thoughts Monoccular. I guess the main similarity was both of them having that caged lion about to be unleashed thing. Performing in finals is a huge difference though.

I was confused at the time also. The tiges conversely against the power celebrated big time as teams making the gf should. It doesn't impact their performance the following week necessarily. Just demonstrates how much the penultimate success means.

I suspect you may be right. Maybe danger over-thought the issue.  The cats would have taken any other team probably. 

Not on Dusty's watch though.

Dangefield is well overated. The media bang on about our players just bombing blindly out of packs, but thats all Danger does. When was the last time he really ripped a finals game apart like the superstar he is made out to be? Go and have a look at who he gets all his big stats games against.

Has too much influence on the game being President of AFLPA and also on the Competition Committee. 16 minute quarters and limits on runners on ground really suited the Cats with all their 200+ game players. Looking forward to 20 minute quarters returning and younger teams getting an advantage through fitness.

Dangerfield is pushing for shortened quarters to remain next season. He said something about there finding a ‘sweet spot’, being an extra minute or so on the 16.

No surprise, as he seems to always think of himself.

Full quarters would not be to his advantage, so why would he support it?

I think you were correct on every count rjay!

Commentators called it a stray forearm and focused on Abletts smaller injury. I found it a bit sickening.

The difference between Danger and Jack V is that Danger kicks it further.
