If this is all true...

then those appointing Yze (or whoever) are either really [censored] dumb (because irrespective of who is appointed...yadda yadda yadda), or perhaps the mythology that Goodwin listens to no one, is simply mythology.

The former I feel, hence one of them is about to be booted (maybe).

Fair enough @SFebes

I just cannot comprehend how outside pundits have a feel of things (stubborn etc), vs those internally (who actively seek external advice) and then those internally, choose to  disregard perspectives on said coach, and hire other people to advise, to a no win situation.

Let's hope we can win a flag every year for the rest of our lifetime them. Players that have never won a flag are a disgrace?

56 years and no flag is a disgrace. There have been plenty of top commentators including ex players of note who hold the same view that unless a player has been in a premiership side he’s not a true great.

Haydn Bunton and Robert Flower are dead so they’re not saying anything. Yes they were all elite players but never achieved the heights of a premiership. While speaking with them why don’t you ask how they feel about that?

Premierships are won by teams. Mediocre players have premiership medallions, undisputed titans of the game have gone without. The assertion that a player can only be considered "great" if they've won a flag is nonsensical when considering some of the Hall of Fame players without one. E.g. Paul Roos. 350+ games, 7 time All Australian, 2x All Australian captain. Zero flags. Not a great? Ridiculous.

Got to wonder if you were alive when he was playing, actually got the most disposals in the league one year, either that or your just trolling.

Highly, uniquely valuable and wise.

Exactly, the Coq is way off the mark with that comment. The list is enormous.  This commentator stuff is all about self-promotion without admitting that their presence in a premiership team is more an outcome of good luck combined with good teammates with exacting coaching and an individual role  that they might have played personally was controlled by that scenario.

We’ve accepted mediocrity for far too long in all departments. I don’t want people back who’ve participated in that mediocrity in whatever role: player, coach or any administrative role. I was keen when Barassi came back as he was part of our most successful era. I do believe he was part of the succeeding success with John Northey due to setting the stage with recruitment and coaching. Use was one of my favourite players too so I withdraw any negative comments about his playing.

Such a stupid view to hold...

Hall of fame players... without premierships

  • Haydn Bunton Sr
  • Roy Cazaly
  • John Kennedy Sr (none as player)
  • Tony Lockett
  • Kevin Murray
  • Bob Skilton

And this was from the time when the rich clubs could buy the best players to add premierships to their names...

And then there's those players in the cue to join the Hall of fame, including a player I rank as the best I've ever seen in Garry Ablett Sr...

I reckon if your list of players you deem to be "not a true great." includes the above list of champions, it's time consider "what the hell am I talking about?"

We’ll just have to disagree then. Many commentators on radio and tv have also held this view.

I don’t think he’ll have a choice @SFebes - the board aren’t going to fork out big dollars for someone to sit in the coaches’ box and not be allowed to say anything.

hmmm, not a group of people I'd want to use to bloster any position I hold.  But rather than just make your bare statement, please explain exactly why someone like Bob Skilton was not a great because he wasn't in a premiership team.  In what area was he deficient?

IMO he was our most skilful player since Flower

Ah, Coq. Coq, Coq, Coq.

'No premiership means failure' and 'Success under John Northey' was a beauty.

Got to also wonder what these 'many commentators' must think of the AFL Hall of Fame.

Anyway. Back to Yze. We've established that he's a loser player unworthy of consideration as a coach.  But tragically neither Steven Armstrong nor Chris Heffernan have put their hat in the ring.

So we might have to just accept this guy, who not only is a loser but has a loser as a mentor. I mean, if that lumpy shortstack Clarko was any good we would've nailed the 1998 Premiership for sure.

@Demonland I swear, the facepalm is helping but a good eyeroll reaction option would have been enough to stop me writing this rant! Just a little sarcasm button to press, that's all I need.

This is the most important part of any new assistant.

If goody doesnt listen then we may as well either sack him or not hire assistants and save the money.

Doesnt look like he will be shown the door this yr so i hope for all our sakes he BLOODY LISTENS.

Name a single radio or tv commentator that would not have Garry Ablett Snr in his top players of all time list?

Just one, of the "many" will suffice...

Weird angle you're working here.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
