Yze????? You must be joking . Were you guys even alive when he was playing????

Hey Coq (with a ck?), whats with the patronising attitude?

Presuming you were alive when he played, ergo you'd be old enough to understand that a footballing career doesn't make a coaching career. Just ask Al Clarkson... or umpteen other premiership coaches or line coaches, or any coach, it's an invalid argument.

It's fine that you don't rate Yze... just don't equate your views on his playing career, with all the growth and acumen he now has as a 40+ year old man, vs a 20-30 year old.

Unless of course, you're either a) in the system and think he is a [censored], or b) his best mate and think he is a [censored].

Got to wonder if you were alive when he was playing, actually got the most disposals in the league one year, either that or your just trolling.

I always rated Brett Ratten right from when he had a great effect on our midfield waaaaay back in the day. Possibly even under Daniher!  He has also clearly done great work getting St Kilda organised and focused and competitive, making the most of a list with few stars but I'd argue reasonably even quality with a short 'tail'.

BUT

Before starting at St Kilda he had a six year term as a senior coach, and for all that he clearly was a good coach it still took him five years to win his first final.  His winning percentage over those six years was coincidentally almost exactly that of Goodwin's so far at Melbourne.

So I would argue it is perfectly reasonable for Goodwin to have 2021 to prove he has learnt more about this coaching caper.  I'd also say that based on our (and Simon's) known/apparent deficiencies, Adem Yze would be a sublimely well-matched assistant/sparring partner for Goodwin.

He also was coaching Carlton, who are still a basket cake.

Bring back Aden Yze and lets get rid of some dead wood, Goodwin, Mahoney, Pert.

Pert? Killing it even for the blindest of fans.

I was told a while ago that someone with a name that rhymes with ‘booze-yay’ was coming to us but didn’t make the connection. Can’t wait to see him back at the Dee’s.

Is there a consensus here that Hawthorn will release him from contract?

Assume a post-Covid soft cap environment may make FD contracts a little more flexible, particularly if a forced 2020 pay cut was imposed

But still, assistant contracts have been a stumbling block before IIRC

15 hours ago, Demonland said:

Didn’t someone mention that his contract with Hawthorn prevented him from leaving unless it was a higher position (ie: coach).

Perhaps the post-COVID rules will enable a parallel move.

15 hours ago, Patches O’houlihan said:

Generally assistant contracts seem to have a clause that lets the coach leave no questions asked for a direct promotion, but unless that's to a senior coaching roles it's a bit murky.

I suspect given where Hawthorn is at they're not going to try and hold him this year, i think they probably thought they'd go a bit better this year

Generally only exit for the top job...

Maybe this is a bigger story?!?

Wasn't the story last year is the Hawks held him because he had a year to run on his contract?

If so, he would be out of contract now and free to move on...

Kent may well have been the most inconsistent player the dees have had in the last decade. 1 good game in 5 and the other 4 were crap or injured.

Can't turn the clock back, but it would be interesting if he [Kent] could have played a full season under our current injury management / fitness regimen.

Chronic / recurring injury seemed to hit him whenever he started to look good.

16 hours ago, Patches O’houlihan said:

He's well known for his match day tactics and played a huge role in Hawthorns ball movement during their flag years so i suspect it'll be something similar to the role Craig Jennings used to hold.

Now that would be something very novel at MFC.  Worth a try, surely.

Definitely was alive when he was playing, and he was gun for us. Anyone who watched him play in our best years in the late 90s early 2000's knows how good he was for us. You are talking utter rubbish if you think he was a flash in the pan.

Look at his stats below from his best years (yes, his last 2 years were crap with injury and not many games, so i dint include them)

Stats don’t tell the whole story. How many premierships did we win with him in the team?

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
