I would be a bit disappointed if we don't find another avenue this trade period for some more speed and to potentially fill up a wing position. Unless of course money is tight and we are trying to throw everything we have to keep Oliver, in which case, I agree.

Get ready to be disappointed. After Mahoney said we only targeted Isaac Smith specifically, but didn't really have a back up option, I knew then we wouldn't be chasing any other options...

Bit perplexed to be honest.

I know there are possible salary cap reasons,  but i just cant understand why teh pursuit of Phillips hasn't been stronger. Recently we have identified needs, Lever, May, Langdon and now Brown, but its not complete, and i know Phillips isn't Keith Grieg or Robbie, but neither is Langdon, but he knows how to play teh wing, is competent with ball in hand, attacking and would provide outlet kicks for us. like Langdon did. I think its terribly disappointing that the entire footy world can see he would be a great addition, yet the club seems not to have done a lot about it.

Just my Opinion.

I suggest no salary cap space.

Maybe we don't have cards to play here, and hence why we wanted Smith as he would have been a free get.

But with Collingwood reeking of desperation, we could potentially strike a bargain basement deal, which we may not have been aware of at the time when the comment re: Smith was made.

I also don't know what sort of draft pick trades we are hoping to make on draft night. Remember  that so many clubs have academy players in play, so need points. We could potentially be better off holding onto picks and trading them for a better overall pick and get a player we have our eye on in the draft.

I find it unbelievable that Phillips is on $600k. It must be an overestimate, because they can't be paying wingers $600k when they're paying Grundy, De Goey, Treloar, Elliot etc. It's really no wonder that they're trying to squeeze 3 guys out in the one off season just to re-sign De Goey.

Their list and contract management has clearly been an utter disaster.

The old saying goes at Collingwood player are rated better then what they really are, or worse then they really are, just by the amount of fans they have making lots of noise. Just imagine paying Cox over $500000, total madness, the man had played about 3 good games in his life, just so happens 2 of them where in finals

Certainly I think we recognized the need for pace and fix the (opposite to Langdon) wing position with Isaac Smith the first option.  After that Phillips was considered an option. But his price is too high (Pies seemed to have overpaid for quite a few players) and we are now unlikely to be able to shift Tmcd.

Yep it more than likely is, which is such a shame.

You find Isaac Smith has lost a bit of pace he is 32 now, this season he would play 1 great game, then would not fire a shot for 4 weeks, he only got over 20 positions 3 time in 2020

It's been covered and I don't think it's perplexing at all.

Smith was a free agent. Phillips will cost draft picks. So, whilst we were interested in a winger if he could come without a cost, we're less interested in spending for one (bearing in mind Phillips is on decent coin and, whilst good, isn't amazing).

That could well be because we've got an overarching strategy to try to get higher up the draft.

Collingwood's Tom Phillips could return to the club next season, with Hawthorn "unlikely" to advance its interest in the wingman.

Pick 65 is a steal. Hard to fathom why we didn't go harder at that price. I know salary is a factor but surely we could have made it work.

Clearly his contract was too large for us to eat.  Perhaps if we had of been able to move T Mac on we might have been more of a chance.

But we can't land everyone.

Agree. Seems crazy ?

We must have a plan to recruit through the draft or organic growth for the other wing.

I am disappointed with that. Dees obviously think he is no good. I don't accept it is salary as we could move on others like Mitch Brown and give Phillips an extra year at a lower salary, but paid in 3 instalments, getting him more and with less tax.

Pick 65 is a steal if Hawks have got the cap space to pay him then fair play to them.

You have no idea if we offered that, or if he would have taken it.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
